  • posted a message on Commander 2017 announcement -- Only 4 decks, based on popular tribes, not color wheel!
Is this not just baseless spec?

Well, I'll throw mine in as well -
    Slivers WUBRG
    Wizards WUBRG
    Elementals WUBRG
    Phyrexians WUBRG (the unexpected one)

I mean how else would you do 5 color decks? Then they could say they did 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 /5 color decks. Also, I think you could say each of these tribes is 'popular' or 'interesting'.

Though I really would want a squirrel themed deck.

  • posted a message on Ugin Planeswalker's abilities
I have a slightly different opinion on Ugin. I think it is fair to say that it would take all colors of mana to trap the eldrazi. We know that the three planeswalkers to trap them are Ugin, Sorin, and the Lithomancer. We now know the Lithomancer to be white. It is fair to say that Sorin was either black or black/white at the time of sealing the eldrazi. That leaves Ugin to bring blue, green, and red mana. This also happens to to relate to the Khan that is most in tune with the spirits of the dragons, which Ugin is known as the Spirit Dragon.

Red makes a lot of sense with Ghostflame costing red and still being colorless. Blue makes sense as he built a massive plan to capture the eldrazi within a complicated prison designed around a plane. Green is a little less obvious. However, he became a spirit speaking from within a world, devised his plan around capturing the eldrazi within the earth, and used the magic of leylines to create the trap. All green in nature.

If we make the assumption that we are going back to a time after Ugin had helped to seal the eldrazi but before his battle with Nicol Bolas. We can assume that he has similar powers to those that helped to capture the eldrazi but also more related to his own world of Tarkir.

    Ugin, The Spirit Dragon 4URG
+1: Deal 3 colorless damage to a creature or player
    +1: Turn target creature facedown
-3: put a 4/4 Green Dragon with flying into play
-8: You get an emblem with "At the end of each turn you may turn a permanent face up or face down. All facedown creatures you control gain a morph cost equal to their mana cost."
    Starting Loyalty: 5

This has a red ability, a blue ability, a green ability and a colorless ability. It also does not give him any abilities that are wasted or or could not be used outside of the set. In sets that have a lot of morph the abilities are both better and worse as you cant just turn a create with morph into a 2/2, but can cause them to spend a lot of mana to change it back. The final ability may be incorrectly costed, but I think you need to be able to use it often. Adding the un-morph bit allows you to use it with other creatures without morph or do so at a much cheeper cost.

Well, you can thank Wizards and Tom LaPille for these...

He was out at YottaQuest tonight and was playing with the intro packs with people.

    All are real guaranteed.

    We were allocated too...

As for timing... this is WAY too early for us to be solicited for preorders for the release. Normally we are solicited about a month before release.

Surprize value reaction: WTF! near Black Lotus reprint.
Thoughtful reaction: Huh... 3 turns later... not actually very good, cant imagine a deck that it would actually see play in.

continued thoughtful reaction: wow... they did a good job on this one... has potential, but will definatly not be out of the gates broken...
T2: good in control to power out some threats earlier, may see lots of play if there are a lot of good 7 drops in time spiral.
EXT: needs to find something to really shine.
Eternal: could be another piece for some combos... It needs to reach the graveyard to become broken, but from there it is an artifact that is effectivly black lotus if it can be brought directly to play. and there wouldnt be any uses for a spare artifact in hand for any eternal decks, as thirst for knowledge is never played.

Overall impression: it will find a home in a few decks for sure, but the fact that you are waiting 3 turns and giveing your opponant the information that it will be comming in those 3 turns, makes it feel underwhelming. However, it will find a place in a deck and be a good addition to those decks. If it finds a type 2 home: $15.00 min. If not: solid $8.00, if not more.

It could make a one-of appearance in anything that will try to use hell-bent thanks to Infernal Tutor. The card really would cause us severe problems because I imagine the only deck that would run Rain of Gore would be some form of fast R/B(/?) stompy that has problems reaching the into the long game vs. control and lifegain.

And, we are not the only deck that uses lifegain, though probably the most abusive, G/W decks, particually those with heirarch, are becomeing more popular as well as U/W decks that will be comming out will use lifegain. If we were the only deck that it could be sideboarded against I would very much agree with your assumption Death by Beebles, but I forsee there being a rise in many decks that will have lifegain componants to them, U/W tron? U/W/g control? that monstrosity of a G/W deck florez put out? it will see some sideboard play if a viable decklist can come out that can use R/B and even more so if hell-bent becomes tournament worthy.

(I've been lurking for a while, but this is my first post. Oh, and I know my meta is going to be running this if nothing else, there are 3 players (including me) that people try to beat and will devote entire sideboards just to the three of us)

I remember there being something on gamingreport.com a while back that Wizards had removed Origins from there Con schedule. However, sanctioned events should still take place even without their official presence.
