Hi all, TLDR at the end.

I was looking through my collection and at my Kresh deck the other day and re-discovered Birthing Pod. My first reaction was along the lines you would expect. Pod gives you a sac outlet, gains you value with a more expensive creature, puts something into the bin to reanimate and then can do it again next turn. EDHREC also has Pod as a safe include in the deck so I set about including it.

The issue is that my deck doesn't have a curve that works well with Pod and I don't have that many creatures that I want to pod into. I would rather Sneak Attack them in and reanimate later if needed. It occurred to me that although common sense would say that Pod is basically an auto include in my sac intensive value deck it, in the decks current state, it isn't worth including into the 99. There is a reasonable case for heavy modification of the deck to make it work better with Pod but at the moment I like the way it plays and don't want to break that.

Background out of the way, It occurred to me that there are plenty of staple card that are played simply because of their staple status rather than because the deck has any specific need for that sort of effect. Simple things, I would argue, like Sol Ring in an elf deck initially seems like a no brainer however I would argue actually provides very little benefit to that particular deck. So the question, how often do you see people playing staple cards in their decks that don't really fit the rest of the deck or look to be included because of their staple status?

TLDR: Do you often see people using "Staple" cards in decks they don't fit in and are you also guilty of this?

Kresh the Bloodbraided. If I take an EDH deck anywhere it's this one then think if I have room for others.

  • posted a message on What hurts the format more? Fast Mana vs. Tutors
Of the two fast mana is, IMO, the more damaging. Hands that start land, sol ring, signet go are pretty outrageous.

WIth that being said they both tend to feed into each other and over use of either is what truly hurts the game.

Privileged Position in Seles is pretty significant. Overall these look great provided they are not overly expensive.

I love playing a tool box/ value deck that wins through combat. Sounds a bit boring to many but in my favorite deck im still finding new interactions that I can use or dont come up often.

Yea the card is nuts. Amazing in basically every format. RIP Isperia but holy moly this card is great.

Certainly looks interesting. I think it will depend massively on how good the convoke cards are. If the other one spoiled today is anything to go by, should be pretty good.

As per usual, ill stick in Kresh the Bloodbraided. Works well with tokens, reanimator/ sac strategies and voltron.

Im expecting new walker commanders and new partners. Partners I'm half on board with but the walkers not so much. I also dont want any more gross uninteractable abilities like we had last year. Edgar Markov decks are outrageously harsh and he still provides a good benefit when off the field that just isnt fair.

As much as we grumble though, the precons have been consistently great (even if not all are created equal *Meren*).

I think recently the scales have tipped in favor of red over white. The addition of conditional draw and filtering means you can find your answers or threats easily, red commanders often play well with artifacts, there has been a greater emphasis on going more midrange instead of super fast and Neheb, the Eternal is objectively strong in his own right.

Provided that you are playing in more casual metas I've always had fun with Lazav because you can add a bit of mill and then use your opponents wincons as your own.

Fact or Fiction, Brainstorm, Ponder are all good draw options.

If you want to add a combo Mindcrank and Bloodchief Ascension kills the next opponent to put something into their graveyard, which is really easy in UB, but crucially both are worthy of inclusion in their own right.

Im just learning the deck, it looks like fun but I'm swapping because im tired of having lots of 80/20 matchups.

Can someone summarise what a lot of matchups are like and any very favored or very weak ones? Thanks.

It needs to be cheap, easy to play and have a few good Dumb easy to spot interactions. As above I would suggest basic land tutors only and some powerful effects. Omnath, Locus of Rage seems perfect and you can jam in things like Greater Good to help towards getting gas. Atarka, World Render seems similarly straightforward enough for anyone to grasp whilst having some actual power behind it. I would also put in a couple of G/W commanders in Shalai, Voice of Plenty and Trostani, Selesnya's Voice as being swarmy decks with access to good removal and they Feel powerful.

I feel like we could get some value from Neheb, the Eternal. Massive attack in with a lot of creatures into lots of damage means even more mana and bigger X spells.

Im getting vibes of X spell tribal with a good bit of tokens to help Rada.
