I know $165 kinda puts it out of budget range, but I was wondering what you all thought of this. I threw this together last night. I don't have a sideboard yet, but more concerned about the mainboard right now. Let me know what you think... suggestions and constructive criticism always welcome.
So, I was thinking of going to the SCG Charlotte Modern Open later this year. I have been playing around with three Modern Decks on MTGO, and none of them seem to be doing too great for me. Now, I'm getting married in a couple of weeks to a wonderful woman with a young child. I'm very much looking forward to being married to her and being a father. But, that does leave me on the budget (but not necessarily enough to be in the budget forum) end of things when it comes to building a deck. So, I'm looking for some ideas.
My current decks are:
Mono-Green Eldrazi Tron
Death & Taxes
VERY budget Kiln Fiend
My Tron deck keeps getting torn apart by all the land destruction decks that have jumped into the limelight as of late. It's a rare match that I win with my Tron deck anymore.
Death & Taxes - Even though it's white weenie, I just cannot seem to get ahead fast enough. I don't have all the top end cards, but I do have a decent amount of them.
Kiln Fiend - though this one is a like $40 deck, it's given me the most wins so far. But, it's definitely not consistent and can't hold its own against higher tier decks.
Seems over the past just year or maybe two (while I was mainly playing Mono-Green Eldrazi Tron), the price of fetches and shocks have near doubled in price if not more in some cases. So, it's tough for me to want to spend that much money on my mana base.
Suggestions to either upgrade these days (without having to spend hundreds of dollars) or suggestions of new decks are welcome.
I'm usually pretty chill in that I'm not a competitive player. If I win, great. If I lose, great. I'm usually just there to have fun and unwind after a long week at work. I think the most toxic thing I've ever done is, after nearly losing a match, I tossed a card on the field and said, "Phew" and breathed out heavily. It was a very good match. I just got lucky that he didn't have what he needed to beat me that turn.
That said, I did play against a girl who never read the rules on her cards. She knew the general rules of how to play but didn't have any idea of what her cards did. She was playing a very low CMC RDW deck, and honestly, she should have been tearing me apart. We were on good terms (not friends, but we knew each other from FNM), so in my curiosity to make sure the card she was playing was actually what I thought it was, I picked it up and looked at it. She immediately picked it up after I read it, found out it had a pump ability of some kind, and used it.
Whatever the case, she never read the cards. She'd play them as if they had nothing but flavor text, mana symbols, and power/toughness on them. After playing a few matches against her, I really wanted to go buy her a set of the "RTFC" card sleeves. I didn't buy them nor did I mention anything about needing to read her cards, but that's probably about as toxic as I've gotten.
Dark Depths itself is colorless, but it can produce a black avatar creature. Would that cause Dark Depths to be outside the color identity of a Mono-White deck? Or would that be legal since Dark Depths is colorless?
I don't get a chance to play at FNM much, but when I do, I'd like to have a constructed deck ready just in case we don't have enough drafters that day, or I just don't feel like drafting. So, any advice or suggestions on the below deck are welcome (still working on the sideboard):
I saw what was claimed to be a "budget" Modern Death's Shadow deck on MTG Goldfish which was $955. I don't call that budget at all. Granted, I understand that a playset of the card Death's Shadow by itself almost puts the deck outside "budget" range. But, that card aside, has anyone come up with just a fun Modern Death's Shadow deck that people could play at FNM, casually with friends, or just to get a feel for how Death's Shadow plays if they actually wanted to pursue a more expensive version? I've done a lot of looking around on google this morning, and I can't find anything that's remotely "budget" when it comes to Death's Shadow.
If anyone has any budget brews for a Modern Death's Shadow deck, I'm definitely up for hearing about it!
So, I am a sucker for Lands of all kinds. They are my favorite type of MTG card. Unfortunately, I don't have the money to put into a Lands deck in Legacy and while there is a Lands brew in Modern, it's still quite expensive. But, Westvale Abbey has caught my attention, and I'd like to put a deck together that I can play for the next couple of months with the sole purpose of transforming Westvale as soon as is possible. The problem is that all of the Westvale-specific decks that I find online are either pre-rotation or right after rotation which leaves a lot of holes in card choices.
Could anyone help me out? I know this deck won't be super competitive, but it'll be fun to play until rotation. I'm thinking maybe a Golgari Eldrazi Ramp deck (using the Scion tokens they create) may be the best way to get it to flip quickly, but that's really about as far as I've gotten so far.
