  • posted a message on Game/Match loss for hygiene issues?
As much as I fear this might be a troll attempt, there is no direct ruling that I know of which covers hygiene. However, and it has been some time since I read the floor rules, there is a section which covers behavior which disrupts a tournament. The way this section was worded suggested behavior which made it difficult for judges and players to work: being too loud, harassing other players, horseplay, etc. I imagine hygiene could be covered by this section but, honestly, the player would need to be in such a sorry state as to offend the sensibilities from afar. Even then I doubt most judges would be willing to file a warning or DQ with the explanation player stank, physically into the system.

The other official recourse is obviously the owner. As most sanctioned games are held in private places, any store manager with authority has the right and ability to simply ask patrons to leave - especially if they find them offensive.

Speaking plainly though, hygiene is an issue which exists quite squarely outside the bounds of a ruling body. Unlike stalling or cheating or lying to a judge, a player's hygiene has a negligible effect on the game state. This is why there is no and never will be a direct DCI rule regarding hygiene. It is an element which neither offers a player a positive or negative advantage and is itself more a reflection of a player's income, mental stability or good social training than any sort of maliciousness.

So if you were hoping for some sort of official intervention, I'm sorry to say you're out of luck. This is one of those cases where both human understanding and directness are your only real solutions. If a person smells, or has other bad habits of hygiene (especially if they're a regular where you play), tell them - as politely as you can. The worst scenario is they overreact or do nothing, but at least they'll know their current habits have drawn some negative attention, which is a far grander accomplishment than one might achieve by posting anonymously on the internet.

Deeply thankful for the list, but is there anyway to generate a sealed deck with it? I keep getting "internal error" when I try.

Yes. Cascade only lets you play it without paying for the mana cost. Otherwise cascaded Burst Lightnings would always deal 4.

Technically, if a player is smart, a cascaded Burst Lightning should deal 4. Mana costs are determined after all decisions for the card are determined (modal, target, etc.). This includes kicker. Meaning, if a player chose to, they could pay the kicker and then pay nothing as cascade allows you to cast a card without paying its mana cost (which is different from casting cost).

But the answers on additional costs are on target. This would include cascading into something like Shrapnel Blast. You'd still have to sac an artifact if you wanted to cast it--cascade or no.

Is Soul Burn technically legal in EDH decks with a mono black general? I know that cards with printed mana values which do not match your general are illegal... but, technically, Soul Burn does not have a printed red symbol on the newer versions.

So, legal or not? Anyone know? Or is this more a house rule thing?

Wonder why it only has protection from colored spells, and not just protection from all colors.

I think, as written, it means the create takes damage from colored permanents and can be blocked by colored creatures - not that it would matter with Annihilator 6.

Fake. People NEVER seem to capitalize the Annihilator ability for some reason.

Not saying it's fake for sure, but it's also missing reminder text on Annihilator ability, which seems unusual considering there is still available space.

The repeat shuffle library ability at the end also seems weird, though it may in fact be a shared ability among the four "Titans."

Could go either way on this one.

This card was the card that really turned me off to WWK. I hate getting cards on R&D loan - a la Steamflogger Boss. If a card is included in a set, it should interact with said set at least nominally, especially if it's in the rare slot.

Certainly it may be awesome four months down the road. Until then, in sealed, draft and constructed, this card will be about as useful as a rules insert...

Actually had the same thing happen to me, with the exact same theme deck - Strikeforce-Planechase. I bought it probably 2-3 months ago but just recently cracked it to show my brother how to play over Xmas. Luckily, it was a placeholder for a plains...

And to those asking, it has the exact same front face as the jpg included (Black "X" over a white card). The back is a normal Mtg back.

Sorry for further derailing this thread from the rumor mill, but since the treasures will only appear in printings through November, are we likely to a price drop in boxes after the treasure run?

I was just curious what people think about the potential of grow decks in the format. A while back, there was a tier 2 deck or so that utilized Vinelasher Kudzu and Summer Bloom. It was a clever deck for its time but never really seemed to dominate as much as others in the T2 environment.

Now we have several grow cards like Scute Mob or Steepe Lynx which perform less powerful but still similar functions. Combined with the amount of land search and landfall synergy in the Zendikar, plus the number of explosive one drops, does anyone think there might be a future for grow decks in T2?

I specifically wonder if Bloodhall Ooze might make a comeback. Considering the number of powerful black 1 drops in Zendikar, Scute Mob, the Ooze and Putrid Leech, I cannot help but think there is some future for a grow-synergy deck with a curve that stops at 3.

    Just thinking.

And the reason you shuffle the token into your library (I think) is that the ability on Darksteel Colossus is a replacement effect. Rather than use the stack, the ability replaces what would normally happen and tries to send the token to your library where it will cease to exist - though you still have to shuffle your library. The key here is that 1) the stack is not used and 2) you are still attempting to shuffle a would-be permanent into your library. The would-be permanent simply ceases to exist once you try to put it into a hidden zone (due to token rules).

If the ability was a triggered ability, the token would be removed from the game by state based effects before the trigger resolved and you would therefore (like the Guile scenario) not have to shuffle your library. So, since Guile's ability is triggered, and since the object which would be affected by the trigger is removed from the game, the trigger does nothing and is removed from the stack (therefore avoiding the library shuffle).

At least that's how my understanding of the rules operates.

The other thing to remember is you can always appeal a ruling. Unless, of course, the person who made the ruling was the head judge. However, most head judges know the rules backwards and forwards so this is a non-issue for most cases.

Having said that, I can assure you any reasonable judge will not be upset with an appeal. I've had it happen to me at an event once, and I simply grabbed a nearby Lvl 3 to answer his question. So if you have even the slightest doubt about a ruling and its one which can affect the game dramatically, consider making an appeal at that point.

I think the problem with this set is that it is such a Johnny set. Johnny-esque cards, normally, take some time to break so that the value of the card(s) is rarely known until far after the actual release date. The obvious example here is Dragonstorm. No one really thought that the deck could compete. It wasn't until (or slightly before) the World's performance where the deck began to receive due credit. Then Dragonstorm suddenly became a chase rare. This, of course, is only looking at the individual fluxation of value for one card.

The same idea can be applied more generally to any set though. Unlike TS & PC which had obvious chase rares (Either Akromas, Pyschic Blast - at the time - Damnation, Teferi - who was underhyped even up to the release date, etc.), FS has very few things which stand out explicity. The value of FS will not be apparent until players have had an appropriate length of time to test just how well the block coalesces with what's out there. For example, Venser may be quite good but it will depend upon the deck which he is put into. The same may be said of any cards with Grandeur. Or Tombstalker. Or pretty much half of the rares in this set.

My guess is that by the time you'll be able to really tell if this set is worth a box (or more), we'll already be distracted by previews for the next set.

If it's Welsh, then there's probably two directions it's likely to go. The first is the whole barrage of Arthurian Legend. I think its Camatharn or some such Welsh town which was the supposed home of Merlin. The other option is Celtic lore which is pretty wide open as 'official' sources of Celtic lore are pretty sparse. That leaves everything from elves, fairies, brownies, leprachauns on up relatively open.

I'm gonna cross my fingers for Arthurian legend though. I hate elves with a passion.
