LOL. There are plenty of adults upset that they can't play, but in this instance it's the kid who wants to play. Funny thing is, we allow people to come in and play whenever they want. We just aren't holding the scheduled event. If these people would have bothered to get their DM's contact info to setup a game outside of the event, there wouldn't be an issue (unless of course the DM didn't wasn't interested).
This doesn't really affect anything magic wise. Since we've opened back up at reduced hours (from 12-10 down to 2-8) and only seating about 1/3 - 1/2 the normal number of people, we still make the same average daily sales as we did pre-virus. The few times we did hold larger events, barely anyone showed up, but it didn't affect the bottom line. Everyone is still buying cards and other products even if they're only playing casually. The only thing that is truly suffering is D&D night. We used to have 60+ people show up every Tuesday night for that, but now we have angry parents telling us we're disappointing their kids by not letting them come and play.
From the collecting core set 2021 article wizards posted the other day (emphasis mine):
Borderless treatments for planeswalker cards were introduced to Magic with Mythic Edition for Guilds of Ravnica and have been continued in each set since Throne of Eldraine. This borderless treatment has become a favorite, and we love the opportunity to bring stunning renditions of each Planeswalker to life. Each of the six Planeswalkers in Core Set 2021 gets a borderless treatment featuring unique art.
In addition, the positive reception to the borderless treatment got us thinking about where else we could capture that excitement. In Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths, we featured the Triome lands in a borderless style. With Core Set 2021, we decided to feature six reprint cards that we knew would resonate with players. We combed through the set to find the perfect fits for the borderless treatment and chose from the set one uncommon (in the borderless treatment, this uncommon has a rare symbol), three rares, and two mythic rares.
They did make a change to Old Fogey. The original purposely had Douglas Shuler's name misspelled (Schuler) as an homage to it being misspelled on the ABU cards he drew, which was doubly clever since the Unhinged set was mechanically built around artist names. That was my favorite part of the card since he was my favorite artist growing up and it was a joke most people wouldn't notice. It's sad to see it gone, but it makes sense.
So, my five bundles came in today, and it was a bit disappointing as far as walker distribution goes.
7 x Ashiok (including the first 6 drops opened)
6 x Ajani
6 x Gideon
4 x Sorin
3 x Tamiyo
2 x Domri
2 x Nahiri
2 x Wanderer
1 x Jace
1 x Huatli
1 x Teyo
I bought them prior to knowing about the walkers, so they're a bonus all told. However, I purchased 17 more individual drops after, and I hope those deliver a better spread. I expected to maybe get 3-4 of a few, but I never imagined getting 6-7 of any in the full 52, let alone the first 35.
Open up a competing store that does allow kids and knock them out of business. They don't sound like very good friends. And with that model, they're bound to fail anyhow.
I've been playing and collecting since '95, but I've only been keeping a spreadsheet since 2014 that tracks my Magic expenditures each year. I'm sure many will find it disgusting how much I spend, but whatever...

Do you buy a lot of displays and have a room full of cards? Or do you play powered Vintage?
I do purchase about 10-12 boxes of each new set, but that's just a drop in the bucket. The vast majority of the cost is due to my penchant for collecting decks. I have over 400 decks built. For instance, last year I bought about 30-40 Revised/Unlimited duals for various EDH and Legacy decks. I also don't swap cards between decks. If I want to build 20 decks that each need 4 Goyfs, then I purchase 80 Goyfs.
I haven't spent as much this year because I've been buying tons of anime. I also used to collect video games. I have a room in my house that's floor to ceiling, wall-to-wall-to-wall-to-wall (three walls) filled with games, but I've sold about 15-20% of it over the past five years since I gave that up. I'm obsessed with collecting. I can't have something be a hobby without collecting the hell out of it...

I can't unsee that now.
