played against a merfolk deck today during playtesting with my friends. it was turn 5 and I untapped with 5 lands and a pestermite in play and I have a splinter twin, spell pierce and dispel in my hand. my friend had 3 mana open and I cast splinter twin for the win which he attempted to spell pierce me and I cast dispel in response and created 20 tokens to declare attacking with all my tokens but not attacking with the main pestermite that is enchanted with splinter twin and he in response to the attack and cast echoing truth which I in response to echoing truth, tap the pestermite that is enchanted with splinter twin to create another token which I targeted one of my steam vents and untapped it and cast spell pierce to counter the echoing truth.
Typically I realize alot of twin players tend to just create massive amount of tokens and then just swing with all for the win. What I actually learn is that against decks that might have counters, it is probably a better play to not attack with the pestermite or exarch that is enchanted so that you might be able to response to any counterspells by using the tap trigger to untap another land. It also certainly serve as a bluff to a certain extent even if you do not have any counterspells in hand since it will make the opponent wonder why are you not attacking with everything which in general most twin players does but of course, I only saw twin players in the LGS and hence such play might be common in the more competitive level though. But nonetheless just want to share the above with you guys..
Yup. For sb, I know what we can bring in. I'm actually asking what will you try to do if you are running a standard ( any variations) infect list and in Game one,the opponent uses chord of calling to chord out spellskite or simply just cast it. I'm sure we do not necessary have to scoop though since certain pump spells do get around spellskite redirect but I'm just wondering what are the ways more experienced players might play to get around it in preboard status? Or would you guys build an infect list that have mainboard spellskite answers if you know that the spellskite is common in your current meta?
I believe it does since it turn back to a land after end of the turn. Just like how rancor drop from it after it turn back to a land again after the end of the turn but rancor will go back to hand after it turn back into a land so it is probably better..
I saw this testing report of a deck and wonder if you guys actually played against Mono green nykthos devotion deck with the newly added chord of calling and etc and how do you guys find that matchup when playing against it?? From the testing results of that player, it seems like as what the guy posted is that after post board, it is very much favourable to them so I'm just wonderingw what would you guys do if you met such a player who dedicate so much hate cards against us and it seems like after his testing, the winning % of the deck is about 70% which I assume is very good then? Is that deck such a strong deck? Of course I have no intentions of bashing or belittling the deck but I just like to understand things from various perspective so that I can understand magic better..
The main reason why I am asking is also because I know one of my playgroup guys play this deck and also active in the discussion and I know he will be implementing the ideas such as using boil because he find it hard to win against my U/R twin and against blue based control decks and since I usually attend the LGS with him and the rest, I am wondering what I should prepare if I were to meet him in tournament which happens fairly often since the modern LGS tournament usually do not have very big turnouts..
The result posted is as such "Vs. Tempo Twin 21 games (13-8 record)
This is far and away the toughest match-up for this deck. Game one, we are definitely not favored. I only played 8 total pre-board games in this period; and lost 5 of them. While this is a slightly lower win percentage pre-board than I had in the past; I'm giving it the most credence as it is the latest set of games. Given that this is the toughest match-up we have; I have devoted a large portion of the sideboard to it. Fortunately; many of the cards used for this match-up work for our other poor match-ups. To date, I side in 9-10 cards vs. Twin. I'd like to play two Combust; but right now I feel like I get more out of a one-of Wurmcoil Engine than running a second Combust. Also, we already side in 10 cards and transform the deck quite a bit...so we're in pretty good shape. Post-board; however, our record jumps to 10-3. Granted, it plays entirely differently; however it seems to be quite effective. The important points/strategies/cards here are:
1. In game one, you must be as aggressive as possible. Don't keep a "slow" hand (i.e. one without a turn-ramp).
2. Choke and Boil are unreal here. If you resolve it, the game essentially is over. My favorite play is a Boil right after they cast their Pestermite on turn 3 to tap out Smile
3. The basic goal is simple...keep them off their combo. With Beast Within (x2), Combutst, Nature's Claim (x2), Choke (x2), and Boil (x2); it is pretty easy to do this. Eventually, you will win (as they won't have enough counters and/or you will hit a Cavern of Souls to end it). You basically turn into a "semi-control/beat down" deck...keeping them off their combo and throwing multiple threats at them. I also like to side in Elderscale Wurm just in case they happen to hit the combo (as they will have to kill/remove him before they can win with lethal damage).
4. I currently side out all of my "X" Spells (Genesis Wave, Chord of Calling, Genesis Hydra, as well as Elvish Archdruid. The reason for Elvish Archdruid is because he is an easy bolt/electrolyze target and when you aren't casting huge X-spells you don't need the extra ramp as much as you do the draw.
5. Planeswalkers are invaluable in any control match-ups. Once down, you quickly begin to outpace the opponent. Between this and all of the card draw; you end up having both ample answers for the combo as well as threats they have to react to.
6. I don't currently side in Scavenging Ooze or Wheel of Sun and Moon for Snapcaster Mage as it doesn't seem to be a big enough threat.
Vs. Tarmo Twin 15 games (10-5 record)
This is very similar to Tempo Twin, however plays a little easier for us (as they are not solely a control deck with a full focus on the combo). Pretty much, the same applies here as Tempo Twin. Sometimes this list will have slightly better sideboard hate against us (Torpor Orb, etc.) so even though you may not need as much hate for the combo; I still side it all in (as it can be used there).

If I am using the list in the link, I would sideboard in 1x batterskull. 2x dispel, 1xnegate and 1x spellskite and I would sideboard out 1x dismemeber, 1 x kiki-jiki, mirror breaker, 2x cryptic command and maybe either 1x remand/ spreading seas. Not sure if that will be the best or not but that is probably be what I will do I guess. lol..
I understand where you are coming from. But with all due respect, Burn is established deck as well and have been around for a very long time. The difference between top tier decks and established decks or even lower tier decks are actually not that big to a certain extent and hence it is inevitable that we have bad matchups against some decks. We also have bad matchups against Boggle as well and probably infect or discard as well if we do not have the appropriate counters or build for that archtype..
Heck, I lost to tribal decks like knights deck and Tooth and nail and other decks at times during playtesting when they have good hands and I have a good hand as well just that the cards in my hand are just not the appropriate cards at the moment such as spell pierce in hand instead of remand when they cast bigger creatures and etc.. lol.. The point that I want to highlight is that even though Twin is considered as one of the top tier decks, it certainly does not means we will win all the matches..
Burn is definitely not that good of a matchup for us although it might be slightly better for me since I run a slightly heavier counter/protection based package U/R all-in twin with spell pierce and dispel and mizzium skin in mainboard and I usually can combo off before the opponent burn me to death if i have some counterspells in the first 3 turns but then i'm also seriously considering huntmaster as well for the extra lifegain as well since I do see burn quite abit as well in my LGS meta. And yes, I do play breeding pool in my deck to splash green mainly for grudge only so it is probably still possible for me to cast out huntmaster if I want to try it..
At the end, I just wanna say that no matter what deck you are using and what deck you oppenent is using, there is always a chance of them beating us even if their winning chance is not that high. There are so many statements stating that modern is a format that rewards the pilot for knowing their deck well and understanding the meta and we can certainly build to make our decks abit more favorable to burn decks as well so it is really dependent on you..
Well if they got the crazy hands of vexing devil , goblin guide, and some lightning bolt and lava spike, remand will be pretty useless against them IMHO. lol.
Anyway what do you guys think of putting familiar's ruse in our 75? it does seems to have some synergy with our snapcaster and plus we usually will have blue creatures to bounce back as well..
I agree with that.. Burn is a deck that that will never go away because it is fast, efficient and simple though the timing to use certain spells is crucial at times. It is certainly not a stupid deck and we do have a pretty bad matchup against them at times unless we can disrupt their first few turns. Burn nowadays play eidolon of the great revel and I actually like them having that card against us because it buys us more time to set up our mana and counters..
I won my game against burn on Monday in game due to my opponent using that card on me and gave me an extra turn.. He is on the play in turn 2 as he lost game 1 due to aggressive mulliganing to 4 due to no lands and I combo off in turn 4. In game 2, if not for the fact that he dropped eidolon on me on turn 3, I might have lost the game instead.
Turn 1
He dropped a grim lavamancer and I played a fetchland and passed it back.
Turn 2
He dropped a torpor orb to try to prevent me from my combo and I fetch a land and in response spell pierce it to counter it.
Turn 3
He dropped the eidolon of the great revel and I remand it back. On the hindsight, I guess I should have boarded out the remand against burn though.
Turn 4 and 5
He dropped a few critters and swinged and burn me and left me just 5 life and he left 2 mana open and I flashed out deceiver exarch at end of turn 4 and he did not respond and I top decked a splinter twin and he tried to kill the deceiver with 2 burns in his hand but 1 burn got counter by swan song and I managed to combo off.
What do you guys think of Eidolon against us? and what are the cards that you guys usually will boarded out in game 2 against burn?
hmmm.. Huntmaster cannot be abrupt decay, right?. o.o
