Creatures you control get _______ is a great design space because it works with the vast majority of decks, especially limited.

A zero minus ability planeswalker will probably be very rare because that's what makes walkers special and not just a legendary artifact/enchantment you can attack.

Well, he said not all walkers one other time. Serra might be an exception considering how easily she ultimates. She could very well be the only walker in the set without a static/triggered ability and was hand picked for that as much as nostalgia. A walker is going to have be hella strong to forego the immediate value of a trigger or the ongoing value of a static ability IN ADDITION to free loyalty activations.

There's also issues that the tutor ability has to be costed into the card, partners were collated into packs in a way they can't do in a standard legal set since the printrun is too large, and War also already has special collation for 1 planeswalker per pack.

It would make sense if the wanderer is Elspeth if planeswalking out of the underworld does strange stuff to you. Of course, it could be what happens to a planeswalker that "dies" on theros. It's probably not urza due to being female and urza literally losing his head over the phyrexian invasion. Serra is presumed dead as far as I know, but I think both her and serra hate creatures power 4+. We'd need an explanation of how serra lived that long as well. I think she's human, so thousands of years tends to be fatal. That's why liliana made her contract with bolas and 4 demons.

I don't know that counterspell would really do much despite looking good on paper. When I looked up the hard numbers for over a year of extended tournaments years ago, counterspell was legal with mana leak, memory lapse, and remand. All 3 saw more play than counterspell by a large margin. If you're going to argue that counterspell is too strong, you have to deal with that. So, what's been printed since lorwyn that would make people want to play counterspell now?

I really doubt they're looking to introduce 500+ cards to modern. How many cards are legacy fringe even or realistically modern fringe that aren't already legal in modern? Creatures, especially, have seen a massive power boost since 8th edition and I don't know if there's a single creature from pre modern that's playable, leaving a few choice selections from supplemental products. I also doubt they're doing stax stuff. They might do wasteland or force, but I'm pretty sure a dedicated lockout deck is out of the question. There's also reserved list which takes out a chunk of the not modern legal as well. I also don't see black rituals and lotus petal coming. They don't seem to be too hot on storm or dredge being better. So, realistically, are there even 50 cards that aren't modern legal that might be tolerable to fun to reprint into modern? Goblins got most of their toys already. It also seems like people's lists are almost exclusively instant/sorcery.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if the above art is a new eldrazi titan.

They'll almost certainly continue the new cards indefinitely. That's how you can sustainably print those high value reprints a few at a time. There's only so many reprints, but now that they have the ability to make new modern powered cards, they can continuously churn out the sets at a lower msrp and not give a damn as much about reprint equity. After all, even if there were zero modern cards over $30, they can print NEW staples you can only get in this new pack. Its really genius. Rosewater deserves a medal for figuring out how to make modern and maybe even legacy sustainable without having a huge sales spike and crash like just reprinting all the old cards for cheap would do. Sure, he might have made a few mistakes in the past, but it looks like he came through in the pinch. It is even an avenue to print cards for old characters that are dead or we might not be visiting their plane anytime soon. Hell, O-Kagachi could even get a card worthy of vorthos. You could even do all the 9 titans, urza, yawgmoth, razia, or anyone.

They didn't promise more valuable reprints. Players assumed it would because of the msrp that was raised after the decks were finished. Wizards spent extra money on them sending copies to the rules committee repeatedly, though, to get them playtested by format experts. If they didn't care, would they have done that? They even flew in Sheldon to talk to him about it. Now, if you don't agree with the rules committee's vision, you don't have to, but don't expect wizards to try and stuff anything in the rules committee thinks is bad for the format like, say, stasis some people wanted last year or low costed land destruction that doesn't replace with basics.

I think someone needs to inject a little logic into the discussion. The candles could represent 36 planeswalkers coming to ravnica. It could represent them losing their sparks temporarily like in mirrodin. What it won't represent is that many planeswalkers dying. That would be idiotic on the level of time spiral's death of tons of walkers, leading to decades of begging for walker cards you can't print except in commander or the past. Spending decades building up a huge stable of characters and just offing them all is a disaster for the brand. As we've found since time spiral, nostalgia is a very powerful tool and completely gutting your nostalgia pack to the point you have to tell people, sorry we can't ever have any present day representation other than maybe a statue on ravnica is a disaster. There's a reason venser and Elspeth are the entire list post mending, Elspeth can be brought back, and they've stopped destroying planes on the level of mirrodin, kamigawa, lorwyn, tarkir, and Alara. There could be a death, but I doubt it, especially after the eldrazi fiasco and the huge amount of planes that would need scars of mirrodin level retcon to satisfy anyone that wants a standard legal return, ever. You can hope for a sorin,Elspeth, or emrakul type demotion from current story, but I'm not sure any interplanar character will ever actually die again. So, how would you feel if it's your favorite that will NEVER return? There's plenty of ways to take a break that aren't the level of extreme of ending something popular with a section forever. I mean I guess you can point to lockout type strategies from standard, but that actively damages most player's enjoyment of the game while a character/plane being current merely means you might dislike a particular set. Said set is still likely to have elements you do like as shown by the set sucks people still wanting a handful of cards.

Prowess will probably be phased out as an evergreen mechanic.

Hexproof and Prowess are both on the cutting block, but Hexproof is a needed tool for R&D but Prowess is not.
I haven't seen any evidence of hexproof going away. Sure, it was listed as a mechanic to remove by candidates for the great designer search, but it's used more than double strike. They're just careful how they use the two because they are pretty powerful. Now, yeah, prowress is on the chopping block, but hasn't been used since Amonkhet block and is on one card in Kaladesh block. I actually haven't even heard anyone but heavy tournament players complain about hexproof and it's a favorite of a lot of people I know.

4 Dimir mythics... Are you kidding me?

Hmmmm. This card would be really cool of it didn't exile itself. As it stands it seems far too narrow and random to be useful once. I would love for this to be recurrable.

Also, why does Dimir get 4 Mythics? I HATE when Wizards does this lopsided crap when they don't make guilds / tribes / whatever have the same, equal amount of stuff to play with.
Well, technically, Dimir has 4 mythics, but it's hard to deny that surveil is beneficial to Golgari and Izzet. Infact, the demon is probably the best honorary Golgari card in the set despite the Dimir watermark and keyword. Wink
