wadprime posted a message on Amonkhet Story ArtSo everything outside the city is death. The city itself is safe, but every aspect of life inside the city is designed to train the people of Amonkhet to fight in the 5 trials, where just about everyone dies. If someone manages to complete all 5 trials, their reward is death. Man, Bolas world sucks... But hey, if this really is just a giant Planeswalker generating Rube Goldberg machine to him, Bolas has quite the racket going.Posted in: The Rumor Mill -

Liliana has recently been a powerful sideboard option, but I think moving her to the main is the way to go. I've replaced Young Pyromancer with her and her abilities are all incredibly useful for us. Her plus takes care of public enemy number one for Grixis (Lingering Souls) and deals with smaller creatures, so we can save our removal for more important threats. Her minus helps us grind out other midrangey decks and stock up the graveyard for snapcaster and our delve threats. If we can protect the queen long enough, her ultimate is an auto win against a lot of decks. I would love to hear your thoughts on my list and Lily in the main. -

The problem is that beating both Mardu and CopyCat is damn near impossible. You can very easily build a midrange deck that can prey upon Mardu, with things like Ishkanah, Grafwidow. But then, the decks that can beat Mardu just auto lose to CopyCat on T4 because they're tapping out for 4 and 5 drops, like the aforementioned spider. Likewise, beating CopyCat by itself isn't very hard, but those decks end up weak to the aggressive curve outs from Mardu.Quote from SC1987 »If the format is dominated by only two decks, then you'd expect someone by now to have created something that can take out those two, bringing the format back into balance. But instead, everyone is just going along to where the pendulum swings as opposed to trying to bring it back into place. Are we all afraid because we don't know what card they'll ban next? Or is the format really just that screwed up that Wizards has to hit the reset button? We know the current Standard is broken, but if it is not broken to the point of being unsalvageable, then we have a chance to try and fix it (or at least provide more damage control) on our own by trying out new deck builds; otherwise, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy where our own belief that Standard is broken beyond repair actually results in it becoming broken beyond repair.
It's not a lack of trying that is holding Standard back, we're just in a really weird spot right now. CopyCat is pushing out any deck that can try and go over the top of Mardu, and Mardu is too aggressive and resilient for any decks that could control CopyCat. They end up protecting each other from any rogue brews. And because Mardu and CopyCat are so powerful, trying to build a deck to beat both is a fools errand. That's not to say that other builds like G/B or Temur Tower can't put up results, it's just that if you're going to a GP or something you're just leaving percentage points on the table by choosing to play something other than Mardu or CopyCat. -

#1, never believe anything you read on Reddit. In fact, better to just never visit that ridiculous site in the first place.Quote from rogue_LOVE »Good writeup on Reddit about expected price trends, for those asking.
#2, They're basing their assumptions on MM15's trends. However, MM17 has a much greater density of sought-after staples than MM15. While in Standard sets this usually means it spreads the costs around and Mythics and Rares stay cheaper, in limited print runs sets this means the set gets opened sooner. It also means people who hadn't bought into Modern yet will view this as their opportunity to do so.
MM13's prices began climbing 2 weeks after release.
MM15's prices began climbing 6-8 weeks after release, and in some cases later.
MM17 could well be somewhere in the middle, and I continue to think 3-4 weeks out is the sweet spot this time around.
Regarding fetches in particular, remember that not only do lands most often get gobbled up in full playsets, but they actually often get gobbled up in full playsets of the full cycle. Expect people to be buying 20 of these, not just 1 or 4. That shrinks supply much more than many people are giving it credit for. -

whocansay posted a message on [[Official]] Modern Prices DiscussionPosted in: ModernQuote from bocephus »Price has always been a barrier to this game. I remember trying to decide if I wanted to by $12 dragons for a deck 8-10 years ago. Now its, do I buy these $70 planeswalkers?
I remember just getting back into Magic around RTR after a break since Urza block and thinking Elesh Norn is the coolest card I'll ever see so it's ok to spend 10 bucks on her, but that's the first and last time I'll ever spend that much money on a Magic card cause 10 bucks is ridiculous for a piece of cardboard.
Couple years later I just bought 7 duals and didn't think much of it. Strange goddamn hobby this is.
On the plus side, Elesh is still the coolest card I've ever seen. -

Sound nice, mind to share us your shadow delver hybrid build?
For sure, it's on the last page, and here's the one with my updates:
I wasn't able to get in any games last night due to me running a Shadowrun campaign but should be able to tonight. I'm really excited to try out the Ranger and Lingering Souls and see if they are as good as I'm intuiting them to be.
Hello friends! I'm a long-time lurker on this thread and usually more prone to posting on The Source for my Legacy brews, but I'm a long time Grixis Delver player in Modern, and the new Death's Shadow variants have re-invigorated my enthusiasm in brewing and tweaking the deck!
I started off with the stock Ryan Overturf list, but quickly started tweaking it over last week. The deck really wants to go down to 18 lands, and I've also incorporated some Stubborn Denials. This version of the deck really does feel closer to the tempo end of the spectrum than the stock lists.
Similarly, I've just recently started experimenting with a fourth color splash off a single shock, much like what the Jund Shadow lists have been doing for a while. I opted to start by testing green, because I felt the addition of Abrupt Decay was a valuable catch-all answer that covers many bases that Grixis can have trouble dealing with (I may just be biased towards Abrupt Decay however). Additionally, it gives access to Golgari Charm, which is a nice answer to opposing Lingering Souls, while also having a floor of blowing up problem enchantments or regenerating through a Wrath. So far I've tested against Jund, BW Tokens, UR Storm, Abzan, and stock Grixis Delver with encouraging results. I don't have enough data yet to synthesize a real conclusion on the green splash, but I'm working on it. Below is my list, I can't wait to keep tweaking and brewing this iteration of Delver in Modern, easily the most fun I've had in a long time.

cfusionpm posted a message on [[Official]] Modern Prices DiscussionPosted in: ModernQuote from Blade »Does anyone else find it slightly disheartening that as soon as the card list for MM3 was known, the expensive cards that didn't get a reprint immediately jump in price, some by as much as 30-50%? I get it, people like to make money, but it almost negates the purpose of MM sets. Where prices go down, you have other staples rise up sharply. Your net gain expense wise to get into the format is almost non-existent. The fetches help overall though, so I'm glad those got a reprint being the foundation to the format. All other format staples that didn't get a reprint... wow. Also, Chalice of the void just REEKS of insider trading. MM set a month away, and the price spikes nearly 50%? Hmm.
Either way, drafts are going to be so fun with MM3 - can't wait.
Similar thing happened with MM15: https://www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/modern-decks-cost-25-percent-more-today-than-six-months-ago
It will be interesting to see if Goldfish does another price analysis after release similar to the link above, but MM17 definitely has more hits than not, when compared to MM15.
I can say personally though, I'm not exactly sad if people choose not to buy into Karn, Chalice, Bridge, and Breach decks because the cost of those cards.... - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.

I run 2 Blood Moon in the sideboard, and drawing a basic Mountain is awful. I refer to The Fake Slim Shady's excellent post here. I've pretty much copied his decklist since it was the most streamlined, and mine is personal preference vs his, especially since a lot of the sideboard cards are heavy on the black costs.
His manabase was as follows:
4 Spirebluff Canal
4 Polluted Delta
3 Scalding Tarn
2 Island
2 Watery Grave
1 Swamp
1 Blood Crypt
1 Bloodstained Mire
1 Steam Vents
Only real change you'll notice is I switched out a Bluff for a Darkslick shores, as I think that 3 "Volcanic Island" and 1 "Underground Sea" is really great for our deck. We're so land light anyway that these lands almost always come into play untapped and I'm elated to have multiples in my opening hands.

Thanks for your response. Like I said, I'm new to Modern so I'm not hugely up-to-date on all the interactions. Your points make a lot of sense, especially as I noted that Disrupting Shoal -could- be good but would warrant a redo of a lot of the deck. I've played a lot of Grixis Delver in Legacy so am familiar with how the deck runs.
Anyhow, much appreciated with the response. I'll stick with a stock list for a while and see how it runs, and then will tune it a bit more as I get used to the different intricacies. : )

Sure, if you're still alive. GR gets a creature that is effectively 4/3 with trample for GR, meanwhile we're playing 3 mana kill spells and 4 mana counterspells. Control is dead - congrats to the dev team! You did it!
1
Yes, please name all of the playable instant speed card draw, countermagic, and removal in Constructed.
You clearly don't play Standard anymore. It's a bizarro world where creatures can be played as instants but underpowered draw spells and kill spells are Sorcery-speed only.
5
Sure it does. But nobody's complaining that Kaervak wasn't a trans-demi-otherkin on Jamuraa, were they? Mirage and Kamigawa remain two blocks where they did a good job of reflecting culture and mythology of the respective societies. Original Ravnica did a good job too.
The real issue is people trying to bring up stuff like "when are you going to do (insert less than 1% of the population) thing" and "you're culturally appropriating" when in reality Magic is a game and not real life.
They should start to get worried if the game goes downhill and not about narcissistic "it has to represent me" ideals.
1
Damn dude, you got some serious SKILLZZZ! When are you going to be applying for the CSI?

I live right near Houston. I have a lot of friends who live in Houston, and I visit them regularly. Never, at any point when I was reading this comic, was I offended. Other people may have been "offended"...I'd be curious to know exactly why. I suppose we'll never know.
Or hey, maybe people were offended by the idea of "unholy amalgams in the countryside"! And I can definitely say that madness (especially during rush hour) in Houston is something I've encountered so that could be it too.
10
Only thing sadder is that some people likely complained that it was insensitive to satisfy their offended requirements for the day.

Ah okay I totally understand where you're coming from now. Fitzlock has a very good explanation for why they aren't in the main so I don't believe it needs repeating. Although yeah, there's always the caveat of local meta.
