I really liked the top 10 also! They still do them sometimes! I can still remember that Dreamhalls was the worst card in Stronghold, WHAHA. :p

I still read the Inquest after 10 years, but ever since the new lay-out it hasn't been the same. I miss Jeff Hannes, Rick Swan and all the other cool writers with loads of humor.

That was the worst card in Stronghold? What made them say that (mind you, this is before I started playing)?

Yeah, I miss reading InQuest, only 'cause it was funny. I really liked the top ten, though. Is there somewhere (other than the magazine) where I can read the top ten lists?

A lot of that is probably just the diretion that US animation has been going in recently. Check out cartoons like Batman or comic books like Powers and you can see the Japanese influence creeping in, at least in terms of art. Kind of interesting as a lot of what is considered "anime style" actually comes from American cartoons to begin with. During/post WWII, Japan got more or less flooded with American media, including cartoons, which happened to include Betty Boop. Big eyes small mouth you think?

Well yeah, I guess that's true. But it's not like it's a bad thing (hell, if the comic industry is gonna take stuff from Europe, but ignore Japan, that's just stupid. And they were kinda thinking that way like 5-6 years ago). Even outright imitation is fine, it's when it fails miserably that it sucks. And Kamigawa didn't fail in terms of flavor (no, j/k, I thought it was pretty good). But yeah, it's starting to go full circle, which is cool Grin

EDIT: and ir eally hated when they took 6-years old to draw the card arts.... what? am i buying a booster to find 10 cards that i could draw myself? Those are NOT shiny! Yesterday 02:49 PM

Hey, that was a promotional thing they did. And quite frankly, I'm jealous 'cause Magic players won't tolerate bad art on their cards. It'd be so cool to make new art for cards....

Seen much Cowboy Bebop, Record of Lodoss War. Vampire Hunter D? Thats three huge anime series/movies right there, that, granted, all have some Japense influence, but its more in the way that anything made in America is going to have an American influence (certainly including CHK). You would certainly never confuse either of those three as being anything but Japanese made. Hence, anime.Yu-Gi-Oh is anime, hence, so is the card-game based after it.

I do think its a somewhat bad classification. I mean, we don't have "francanamition" or "austealianimation", but we have "japanimation?"

"Canadanimation"? How about "Afghanistanimation"? Yeah, don't ask about that one... Seriously though, well I'm more wondering about CHK a year ago, what all the "OMG, Anime!!!!111!!" people were expecting. Considering the majority of them only knew Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh for anime, did they honestly think it'd be about kids going around fighting with their monsters against other monsters?

I really am curious, especially after the Ravnica trailer was first talked about (before it was online) the guy who talked about it said it was anime-ish, and some people were worried that there'd be anime type art in Ravnica. Yeah, I'm just curious is all. And personally, I'd like to see what would happen if there were a few manga artists who did art, but that's just me.

@arch: If you think pokemon's monsters are stupid, try looking at yugioh. Beaver Warrior and '4-Starred Ladybug of Doom,'...<_<

On topic: sure it would be hard to come up with symbols that both fit the guilds and were 'original'; it's just funny that there were multiple matches in a card game made by the same company lol.

Dude, Yu-Gi-Oh was more or less inspired by Magic, or at the very least American RPGs, so basically you're saying that early Magic and D&D are stupid.

Which brings me to another thing: why the hell does everyone think the Yu-Gi-Oh card game is "anime-ish"? I mean sure it's Japanese, and the artist is a manga artist, but there's hardly any use of Japanese themes, and most of the stuff is based in Western mythology and fantasy.

"Oh noes! They actually used an eye for a symbol! Like Pokemon. Let's ingnore the fact that the eye has been used as a symbol for thousands of years of history and panic over the fact that the guys in the graphic design department might've actually gotten something from Pokemon!"

Seroiusly, all of those are over used motifs and symbols in just about everything. Just because four of them are like Pokemon energy symbols doesn't mean crap. That doesn't throw out the theory that they saw it and used it for inspiration. Hell, it happens all the time, Pokemon and Magic share the same blue symbol (the drop of water). And Pokemon is/was a good card game. You wouldn't beleive how much you'd learn about playing Magic by playing Pokemon.

Edit: Dude, it's not the Izzet, it's the Orzhov Syndicate. And the symbols being only part of the guild symbols is kinda pushing it.

The Mountain looks way overdone, if you ask me. The Swamp is awesome, though ^^

I rank the four we've seen as thus:
    Island>Swamp>Plains>>Mountain

On another note, has anyone found a website for that Richard Wright guy? Google doesn't work 'cause it's a very common name.

WOW just wow found these on a french magic site

    Oh, that'd be sweet, man ^^ What would you have to do to get one? Win the invitational? Or send MaRo a really nice letter. He likes well written letters ^^;;

They were mock-ups Buehler or someone else made to show what the new artwork would look like if they were actually made into cards.

I think it was last year when the Timetwister art was given out.

    What article was that?

A Scandinavian block? You mean like Ice Age?

Yeah, but Ice Age was kinda weak in the cultural flavor department. I mean, all they did was add some barbarians, put a few minor mythological themes and creatures, and made it take place in nothern Scandinavia. There's no berzerkers, no gods that come and kick ass in huge battles, and no end of the world, though I guess for Ice Age the Brother's War could be Ragnarok.

If there were another Norse/Scandinavian block it would have to do with the pending destruction of the world, and it would have to have a lot more references to Norse mythology. I guess it would be a Kamigawa 2, though they could make it more battle orientated.

Any of it take place outside the city, or is everything in Ravnica a city? Or do they have indoor places that grow with vegetation? Where does that one tree reside, anyway?

no you're right... it reminded me mostly of anime because of the high production style, not because of catgirls bouncing around. when i talked to a WOTC "black shirt" he mentioned that it was made spacifically for the con. i wouldn't be suprised if it's linked online once the set starts previewing.

Alright! ^^ I hope you're right about putting it online. Then again, have they ever made a thing like this before?

Aww, I wanna see that animation Frown

And to all skeptics, when he says anime, he means it very well animated and realistic, not all cheap and cartoony. ...I hope ^^;; Yeah, I like animation.

That wolf guy is awesome, especially since he's in the W/G clan Grin

I suggested this a while ago, and it fits what we've been given so far about Ravnica. If they did it, it'd likely only be for the Ravnica block, so I don't see how there'd be any confusion.

That said, I don't think Wizards would have the guts to do it.

Hey, if they had the guts to make new dual lands. Or reprint Hypnotic Specter. Or all the painlands for that matter. Though yeah, if they did something like this, it'd be really gutsy.
