I think Rafiq is pretty solid.
On the UB topic, Wydwen probably should have gotten 2nd over Oona, but I think too often Wydwen just gets viewed as a worse V. Clique and so people dismiss her, even though she is a top tier general for 1v1 competitive play.

If he is amazing in competitive, how are guys like Mormir Vig that cost the same amount of mana and win you the game faster not being played?
Momir gets played..but you are comparing a general in bad 1v1 colors to a general in good 1v1 colors...Momir currently gets outclassed by Edric (and lots still voted for Momir), Kresh doesnt have the same comparison of generals going for him, there is no Edric for kresh. We also arent voting on Tier 1 generals...only best in each color...Kresh has a streamlined strat that while not exciting and not the best of such strats, still works and at least is consistant with pressure. Xira and Adun dont provide that line of attack and are forced to either play combo or straight up jund aggro and once you get back to aggro then Kresh still ends up better. I never said ANY of them are "amazing" in competitive, they are all bad...but we had to vote for somebody for the colors right? Kresh just happens to have the most legit and focused plan. If we had to pick only top tier generals I would just skip over a lot of these colors. Momir might be faster/better than Kresh, but Xira and Adun are both slower even at a more competitive mana investment (although 3 mana a turn to use either ability is kinda bleh)
Both are card advantage. Card advantage is getting usable cards into your hand.
Less random as in "You know you're going to get a creature instead of land, ramp, or a tutor."
Except for the fact that often Adun is doing nothing because you have no creature there or that when he does recur a creature to your hand it often isnt the right creature or a good enough creature. Xira gets you through your deck and gets you towards answers..plus..what if the advantage you need at the time IS another land, or tutor, or piece of removal? Adun isnt doing much for you at that point.
Jul 31, 2011Posted in: Commander (EDH)Jitte goes down quite a bit. It offers no protection/evasion like the "Sword of" cycle does, no card advantage, and it's abilities are mediocre at best. Maybe it's just my meta
If you re-read my post I make it pretty clear I play in a competitive 1v1 meta...jitte is really amazing and the abilities are anything but mediocre...The protections are somewhat less relevant as the protection isnt what matters...you get counters for combat damage so you dont actually have to hit the players...it is a means of removal that is totally insane against a large large portion of the competitive meta bringing with it massive amounts of "card advantage" and it makes all of my guys a lot bigger than any of the swords do which is highly relevant in a ton of situations. An active Jitte says "answer me now or lose this game now" more than any of the swords do.
Now if youre insisting that EDH is only a "play big stupid creatures" multi-player format then sure, Jitte obviously goes down in value and if you really have to swing into that Serra Avatar over and over again then I suppose that something like Sword of Light and Shadow is pretty good...but again, we are simply playing two different versions of the same game.
Jul 31, 2011This thread is broken because the best sword isnt on the poll.Posted in: Commander (EDH)
to stay on point though. I chose Fire and Ice...I primarily play 1v1 and while FaF is a close 2nd, fire and ice draws you a card (extra relevant for some colors, and even so turns something like clique into a draw engine? ridic) and the 2 damage while not amazing does allow you to clean up a TON of the good 1v1 generals. Pro blue is also at least as relevant or more so as Pro black especially for competitive 1v1 where blue is everywhere, pro green is probably better than pro red I guess, but neither is a major major factor for me for the sake of this poll........now if only they would make Sword of Famine and Ice then we would be in business!
3rd-Body and Mind (im not sooo worried about gy stuff and I get a blocker and pro blue)
4th-Light and Shadow (Pro white hasnt been uber relevant for me here, pro black is great, recurring creatures is cool and all, but the light ability to gain life is pretty irrelevant)
5th-War and Peace (I probably dont bother running this in my EDH decks for the most part...Id run it in multi-player I suppose just strictly for the sake of randomly having pro white)
Im sure a lot will argue over my 3rd vs 4th...but meh, that is the relevance for me when searching to equipment...there are some decks where I would specifically rather have Light and Shadow though.
Jul 31, 2011Posted in: Commander (EDH)I choose Adun Oakenshield, mainly because he is less random than Xira. The flying is really nice on Xira, but in EDH you want repetition of good effects as much as possible.
Im not sure how getting back creatures to your hand that may or may not be in your grave at the time is "less random" than drawing a card in colors that need help with card advantage.
Vanillia beat-sticks of appropriate size can win games in a hurry (kresh can get pretty big pretty fast), but still if you want to go jund aggro with some voltron stuff to back it up it is a pretty solid option...not that id personally run him..but he seems the most likely to be consistantly competitive....
I like Xira and Adun better from a deck building and playing standpoint...but my vote remains for kresh for strictly competitive voting purposes.
Jul 30, 2011I think probably it is Kresh....I really like the idea of Xira and I like a few versions of her that I play from time to time, but sometimes she is just too clunky....if she had 2 or 3 power she would be soooo much better. Still card advantage in Jund colors on the general is pretty sweet.Posted in: Commander (EDH)
Ill vote for Kresh based on known info, with Xira 2nd.
Jul 27, 2011meh, the deck functions very similarly to Sygg which everybody should have already known about..not to mention tournament players should have been looking at edric as soon as he was spoiled anyways, he was fairly obviously going to at least be somewhat good. 3 top 8s and a win is pretty much just a confirmation of him being high tier rather than just random forum speculation of the fact.Posted in: Commander (EDH)
Mind you I am not saying Momir is bad...but I think it should be clear that Edric is a better 1v1 general overall.
Jul 27, 2011For those who voted for Momir over Edric for the last category I would like to direct your attention to the French national EDH championships which included three edrics in the top 8 along with one winning the whole thing...can you guess how many momirs ended up doing well at that event?Posted in: Commander (EDH)
Jul 26, 2011Id like to think that at some point Nin will end up being best here...I simply havnt seen any real competitive lists being played yet. For now I guess ill go with Niv Mizzet until I know more.Posted in: Commander (EDH)
Jul 26, 2011I thought I posted, but either it got removed or my internet failed:Posted in: Commander (EDH)
Yawgmoth's Will is NOT a reanimate effect....if you are going to include will you need to include ALL graveyard recursion effects, but IMO that should be a different thread or section.
Jul 26, 2011Posted in: Commander (EDH)Momir has far better toolboxing and is overall a way more fun general, but in 1v1 cutthroat competitive, it's Edric. My vote goes to Momir.
This is a 1v1 best general thread...you cant say Edric is better and then vote for Momir because he is more fun, how does that make sense?
