Has anybody attempted to run Appetite for Brains in the sideboard? I haven't tested it yet, but I have two in my board for Tron and the mirror match where I might not want IoK. This gives me the ability to keep pressure up with turn one discard where I might otherwise side it out. I think I might not be seeing it at all because we have so many good options for the board, but I would like to hear the opinions of other spaghetti slingers to see if it is worth trying.
Hey there! I'm a long time lurker on MTGS and made an account to ask what I should play in this thread.
A bit of back story: I went to the local modern night at my LGS last weekend for the first time in about a year or two. I brought Living End with me and did not do great; I got stomped by a combination of poor play, bad draws, lots of hate and control decks. My meta seemed to have a lot of control (UWx), and I did not see anyone playing Twin or Pod (though I have played against those decks there in the past). Now I am not giving up on Living End, I love the deck. However, I would like to ask you fine folks what would be a good alternative deck for me to play in a seemingly control heavy meta. I have a few modern staples, but I am trying to stay on somewhat of a budget. I can't justify shelling out more than $15 on a single card.
Favorite Playstyle (Aggro, Midrange, Control, Combo): I'm an aggro player at heart and aggro seems like a strong deck to play here. How Competitive (For Fun, Local Tournament, MTGO, PTQ/GP): Local Tourny/ Casual Favorite Cards/Colors: Green and red, but open to whatever Budget: It depends. I'd rather build something with mostly cards I already own, so let's say $100. I'd be willing to pay more for a new deck if it is really appealing. Staples Owned:
4x Tarns, Marsh Flats, and Mesas
4x Snapcaster Mage
4x Remand
4x Grim Lavamancer
4x Sulfur Falls
4x Serum Visions
4x Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
4x Path of Exile
4x Mirran Crusader
4x Birds of Paradise
4x Goblin Guide
3x Geist of Saint Traft
3x Aven Mindcensor
3x Ranger of Eos
3x Blood Moon
2x Thundermaw Hellkite
1x Misty Rainforest
1x Cryptic Command
Various shocks and red and white creatures
I also have two decks all ready built: Nykthos Wave Green (needs a sideboard though) which is insanely fun when I play it casually, but just does not seem sturdy enough to play against non casual decks. I mostly built it because I love green ramp, but it just seems like a more fragile Living End to me. I also have a fast (one drop) Boros deck built that I have been considering taking apart. I have a soft spot for Boros as it's what I started playing modern with, but it basically just seems like a poor man's zoo right now. It is however an aggro deck which could be good in my meta. Would it be better to play a goyfless zoo deck than this? Zoo is pretty much the deck I would love to play if I had the cards together, but I am unwilling to buy into the goyfs and green fetches.
Last thing: I also used to play UWR Tempo Delver, and have a lot of those cards. I've been really interested in the UR Delver decks, especially the Young Pyromancer variant. I can build this deck with mostly stuff I already have, and it looks fun. However, I'm not sure how the match up is versus control.
TL;DR: I think I have a few valid options. I can play Nyxwave, Boros, or UR Delver from stuff I already own. Other options could be budget zoo, or maybe D+T/hatebears. What do you guys think?
