Anyone think the Modern Event Deck will get more players into Modern, or would the $75 price tag be too much and just turn the newer players off? Also, depending on what's inside, card shops might increase the price to ridiculous levels. I would love to have more Modern people to play with, but I feel that price is the number 1 barrier to entry for Modern for newer players.
And let the baseless speculation about the end of the reserved list begin =P
Wow this was actually exactly what I was thinking when I first saw this. You would expect, with a title such as Magic Origins, it would be about something related to the early days of Magic.
First round: 2-0 against mono-black devotion. I feel that this deck overall is favorable against mono-black devotion. In the first game, I did not even lose a single point of life. In the second game, I lost 7 life. I feel that for this matchup, a fast start and Skullcrack for Gary (although this particular opponent did not play any during our match) can seal the fate of a mono-black devotion player.
Second round: 2-1 against black/white control. This deck plays similar to Mono-black devotion except it splashes white for Blood Baron and Obzedat. I lost game 1 due to the annoying Blood Baron's lifelink but won ames 2 and 3 pretty quickly.
Third round: 2-0 against RDW. With 4 Boros Reckoner, along with 4 Searing Blood after sideboarding, this deck is a force to be reckoned with, pun intended.
Fourth round: 1-1-1 against white-weenie. Since both my opponent and I are 3-0, we decided to just draw and play for fun. His deck is actually pretty good. I actually went 2-1 against him because he never drew Brimaz.
Top 8: 0-2 against G/R Monsters. Honestly, I am just happy to make it to top 8. My opponent's swarm of creatures overwhelmed me game 1, and I got landscrewed game 2 so I just conceded early. Then we just played for fun.
Overall, my cumulative record with this deck for swiss rounds is 18-4-2. Also, I think it is worth pointing out that when this deck has at least 2 Legion's Initiative, my cumulative record for swiss rounds is 10-0-2.
This is the problem with MSRP of $75. If it has too much value, you have the hoarder problem and LGS jacking up the price. If it has too little value, heck even if the actual cards inside is valued to be $75, then why the heck would anyone want to buy it when you can just buy the pieces you are specifically looking for much cheaper?
Aaron Forsythe just tweeted "Heads up... The picture of the Modern Event Deck floating around is a pre-production mockup and is not completely accurate to what's final."
I wonder if something is being changed (i.e. Bitterblossom) due to the B&R list changes.
Maybe they saw our reactions and the backlash it has gotten before the product even came out? Just a guess.
All right guys, since we just found out that the Modern Event Deck is going to be B/W Tokens, this has severely damaged my trust and hope in Wizards doing what is best for consumers. Wizards obviously demonstrates that it does not care about the absurd levels of card prices. Honestly, I would not be surprised if fetchlands are NOT reprinted in the next Standard block or the one next year, and would not be surprised if Wizards does some BS move like putting them in Modern Masters 2 in another extremely limited print run.
If you are a bit mindful of your budget, then I would not recommend R/G Monsters. That deck literally costs around $500 with all of those planeswalkers. Since you are already playing a B/W deck, I would recommend either mono-black devotion or Black/white midrange. Mono-black devotion is I would say the cheapest tier 1 deck currently in Standard, and it is quite good. I have gotten owned by this deck pretty hard.

What is the previous record?
