and a bunch of foil non-rares I'm pleased to have.
Drafted two 8-man pods. First draft was B/r bloodthirst. Got 4 Vampire Lacerator in my B/R deck and 2 of the 1/1 bloodthirst 2 goblin war drums guys. Won the pod. Second draft I went U artifacts, won the first round, lost in semis.
I really enjoyed the drafts. I felt like the decks are more solid than decks in MM1 were; they sometimes feel above Standard power level. That being said, I lost in my second draft to some weird stompy goodstuff deck, so you can go off plan, too.
if you check TCG player you are wrong. This is TCG player low I am talking, what I would get for the card if I sold it now. Boxes should have been 25%-40% cheaper msrp.
Also no box is guaranteeded more than 1 mythic, nor is guarteed a rare foil. In any case, the foil rare is inexoreable tide. Which might actually have some sort value listed on tcg player, but I assure you, it is ******* garbage. No one would pay anything for it.
If TCG low is how you judge boxes, never buy a box of anything ever. I'm not being snarky, I'm serious. If that's how you feel, you should never, ever buy a box. If you get added value on opening packs, drafting with friends, etc, then you can't judge prices the same way.
So we know it was mostly a scheme to increase prices, but how many of you actually plan to recycle them?
It has been suggested that it has to do with the increase in MSRP, but a better theory is the MSRP was raised to better reflect the actual selling price (and thus increase Wizard's cut of the profits).
I am ELATED that they are moving to recyclable material. I will always recycle these packs. It is amazing how much waste there is EVERY FRIDAY for drafts in EVERY MAGIC STORE. The amount of waste that could be converted into recycling is astonishing.
Shaiguy, I'm not from Nova Scotia, I'm from Quebec....and I'm not blaming store for taxes...I'm only trying to ''exemplify'' the fact that most stores sell well above SCG price here in Quebec...and also that most stores sell their singles at SCG price TAX INCLUDED...making it much less interesting to buy a box than to buy singles...by a huge margin..
Sure their is some store selling around 325$+taxes in the province...but $360 is from a well know and respected Montreal Store...and this is for presale...namely Face to Faces Games pre-selling at 359$ (at least on their website)...
Also, I completely understand that taxes and duties from buying from SCG or else in the USA make the comparison a bit weak...but as a customer I can buy their singles without a $ of taxes and without any hassle...my 24 cards list only demonstrate that the gap is really huge for us in Canada (Quebec) even at $300+taxes = $CAD345 or $US280
Fair enough. Quick google searches oddly don't find better prices. That being said, I probably wouldn't shop at Face to Face; bigger stores in Magic tend to have higher prices, not lower. I think it's odd that in such a populous place as Montreal there wouldn't be better competition, considering Winnipeg's population is only 700,000 and competition has kept prices down.
Don't worry, in Canada it look like it's gonna be around $360 + taxes (15%) = $414 ... at the spot rate of 1.22 CAD for USD...it's around $US339...when you take into consideration that most stores here sell their singles at SCG price (tax included and in CAD$)...buying thoses boxes is crazy..
Quick calculation : 24 pack per box for $CAD414...it's $CAD 17.25 per pack...
"In Canada" ... Where do you live, Nunavut? In Winnipeg, the 4 shops' prices that I know of are each $300 which is minutely above 240 USD, leading to 12.50 CDN per pack (which, again, is basically the same as US pricing). One of them ships and has boxes up on their website.
You should pick different shops.
Also, including tax as a disinsentive is silly. Did you include shipping and duties on your SCG order? Tax has nothing to do with your shop's greediness or Wizard's poor pricing, it's mandated by your Provincial and Federal government.
EDIT: 15% means you're from Nova Scotia. No wonder your shops are jerks, there probably isn't any competition.
You know, preordering these sets lately seems to be like the same issue as preordering a videogame these days. You end up burned so often, it's probably best not to, as MM2 shows.
Why would you ever pay for something before seeing it? Okay I get that people thought there would be availability problems, but still, you're taking a massive gamble.
I've never pre-ordered anything in my life.
I still don't understand why anyone thinks preordering MM2 was a bad decision. Even with the terrible second half of the spoilers, i can still sell my box for at least 40$ profit.
As for the rest, well, *shrug* its WotC's loss, not mine.
This set will most certainly still be a big hit for WotC, it's only our loss.
Loss in the sense they're not getting my money, whether they get it from others is up to them.
That sentiment makes sense for sets with multiple print runs, but this set will all be bought by stores/distributors, and WotC will get their full money off of this set.
I just don't get how this thread turned into a spiral of depression. This set's actually really good, and this feels like the quote of $100 bills and you guys *****ing about them being folded wrong. If MM1 had been $10 you guys would be doing the same thing you are now, and if this set was $7 90% of this complaining would be gone.
I read Jeffbcrandall's post in the last page showing how the EV of a box is $200 assuming prices dropping 20% on mythics, and 40% on rares. Except they've already done 2/3 of that drop. So the Ev's closer to $260-290. Just pointing that out. Right now, and on release the EV of a booster box is above MSRP. Dragons of tarkir on release day was around $100, so this is where I ask, are all of the complaints coming from people who buy boxes on ebay or their LGS'es? How much do you pay for a box at your LGS? $110? $120? At that point, I truly believe this to be the vocal minority *****ing. Just my 2 cents.
Don't try to rationalize. People are upset this doesn't have foil Force of Will and Jace tMS.
The problems with this set have nothing to do with the high-end material.
I think if you read, most people have a problem with the uncommons and commons basically being worthless. Seriously, if I open packs, there's only a few commons I'm looking for. Vapor Snag, Vines of Vastwood, Eldrazi Temple, Darksteel Citadel... what else is even worth a lick? Uncommons? Lightning Bolt, Remand and Electrolyze? What else?
The Mythics are great! The rares are okay, could use a few more $6-$8 cards to balance out your odds of getting totally screwed out of a back, but the uncommon and common quality is almost entirely junk.
Force of Will is an uncommon.
And of course I was being short in order to be snide. I understand that Path, Iniquisition, Spell Snare, Gitaxian Probe, Serum Visions etc aren't printed. Learn to take a joke :).

To the people who have done calculations trying to find an EV for the set and wind up with numbers of $250+, are you taking into account the reality of selling cards? That kind of price point could easily be what a store would reach if it opened boxes themselves. But they get to sell direct at premium prices. What about the average seller who is looking to move value they'd get from this set? Are you factoring in the lower prices from places like eBay and the cost of shipping and handling?
The EV of the set seems fine if you're a store opening a case. Even excluding the high variance of value in the set it's notably lower for people try to move cards on their own.
The way EV is calculated for this set is the same as EV being calculated for any other set. Just like a box of Dragon's Maze is $10 and that's if you get to sell at store prices, this has an EV of $220-260. It's a better ratio to cost than Dragons of Tarkir ($60) Fate Reforged ($34) or Kahns ($41). To reach the same ratio as Dragons, the EV of MM2015 would have to be $160.
I just feel bad for the 9000 people that have booked places at the three GPs, including the expense of accommodation and travel, on the promise that this would be as good (or even better) than MM1. Which it quite patently isn't.
What a disappointment for them. A load of people I know are going to GP Utrecht and I seriously considered joining them. Delighted I didn't waste my money now.
If you were planning on going to the Grand Prix with the expectation that your cards would pay for your trip somehow, that's absolutely ridiculous. It only costs you $100 to travel, stay, and pay for the GP? Or were you expecting multiple foil goyfs to pay for it?
It's far too early to say whether or not the actual sealed/draft experience is good or not, but presumably going to a Grand Prix is about playing Magic, seeing people, and seeing new places.
This calculation gives EV of $303, and after prices fall it presumes EV of just over $240.
Yes, prices on cards will fall, but there's also 1 foil per pack which the first two links don't address. I understand complaints about needed reprints not being there, but complaints about worthless boxes are unfounded.
the problem with all of that is that value is based on a complete set. You're not going to be getting a complete set in a box. Nowhere near close. Most of the value is concentrated in the mythics, which, unless you're one of those lucky SOBs who always gets like 7 mythics in their box, you'll be lucky to get one or two of the ones that will actually help pay for the box. Tezzy and Comet Storm sure aren't going to do it. Like half the rares are worth a buck or less and another quarter of the rares are only expensive due to casual demand combined with very low supply. They'll tank pretty hard when the set actually comes out, as will several of the lesser-played and sideboard-only Modern cards. There's practically 0 value in the commons and uncommons, unlike last time.
Yes, EV is based off of the value of the set as a whole, and then using averages determines what the average value of a box is worth, thus EV. I don't know why we're teaching eachother statistics, but this doesn't change that the average value expected out of a box is between the first and third number I quoted. That accounts for cards with little to no value (and values them at $0 in many calculations, no less!). You're still trying to argue against statistics with anecdotes.
As someone with 3 boxes on order, this kind of numeration is incredibly valuable. People keep saying it's ***** value because when you draft 3 packs you will likely get $10 or less of value, but that's not how it works for all consumers. Averages are pretty important when you buy in larger scales. And yes, I plan on drafting these with friends, not just fiendishly cracking them, but I'm keeping the cards.
I already know what I'll be doing at GP Vegas. Blackjack tables all day and night and the vintage side event. I will play in exactly one draft of this and that's it. Like good god what angle was WotC aiming for with this set? Did they want it to suck to hype origins or something? I have no clue at all. They can't reprint $10 commons and uncommons? That's just outrageous to me. Remand is the only real uncommon of value in comparison to price per pack.
As for getting MM2015 cheap? That should be easy if the general masses are as displeased as I am which is to say greatly disappointed. I wouldn't buy a box of this set for $200. I'd think about it at $150 but probably still no just to send a message.
Let me know if you find any of those $200 boxes. As I said, they missed out on reprinting needed staples, but boxes still have better value - cost ratio than any other.
This calculation gives EV of $303, and after prices fall it presumes EV of just over $240.

the average prices for your rare slots is 47.5 for your mythic and 7.8 for the rares so at 21 rares so an avg of 163.8$ for your rares and assuming 3 myhics thats an avg of 142 making it about $305 avg for a box
No-one's interested in your rational read of the situation. When we saw all of the valuable mythics in the set people were praising the heck out of Modern Masters 2015, but now suddenly it's worthless trash.
I'm upset that some cards I expected aren't in, but I don't regret my 3 boxes. I'll phantom draft them with friends and enjoy the value.
This cube is still a work in progress. Lots of weird balancing issues (only 5 dual lands, some cards are in the wrong colour, such as Vedalken Shackles), some of which are more important to me than others. Feel free to make simple critiques or suggestions for replacements that cost $50 or less.
Splits are 50 of each colour, 5 of each guild (50 multicolour), 50 lands, 50 artifacts. Most colours have a 25/25 creature/noncreature split. Green is 30/20.
Splinter combo is supported, animator is supported, "mono brown" is in the middle of being added. Red is only played mono or with white or blue at this point (red green and red black rarely get played) which is an issue I need to look into.
How likely do you guys feel it is that Serum Visions is in?
Wizards has systematically banned every other good one-blue costing cantrip, causing Serum Visions to almost hit $15. If they don't reprint it, it will show a total lack of understanding of the environment.
