The main reason to splash is for better removal, and while Red is usually great for that, Red's biggest advantage is that it can go to the dome when you don't need removal, which Utron doens't really benefit from. Decks like UWr and Jund can really use that reach, but the way Utron wins doesn't make burn to the dome all that good. Even if you'd manage to fit in 4 bolt and 4 electrolyze you'd need every burn spell in your deck to get to 20, compared to UWr which can also run Lightning Helix and four Snapcaster mages. A bolt might make you win one turn faster with Wurmcoil Engine but generally once we drop Wurmcoil we have board control and we don't really just lose out of nowhere. Our other wincons, Sundering Titan and Mindslaver, don't really win with damage to begin with.
If I'd splash in Utron I'd splash Black. We already run Dismember and Talisman of Dominance, Urborg combos pretty sick with Sundering Titan, and you get access to Thoughtseize, Disfigure, Drown in Sorrow, Damnation, and Smother. You could even run Tezzeret Agent of Bolas but at that point you're better off playing Tezzerator.
And although everyone here has heard it a dozen times now, keep in mind that splashing comes at a cost. The lifeloss from fetches and shocks is very significant, manascrew becomes a big problem with Utron's 14 colorless lands, and resolved Blood Moon turns from a slight annoyance into gg. You will need to cut cards which is tough in a toolbox deck, not only for your newly splashed cards but also for more lands: I'd definitely run 25 lands with a splash, and that's without Tec Edge.
A splash should definitely be discussable (I myself am pretty interested in the possibility of a black splash) but the question is whether the upsides of a splash are worth it over the downsides.
Goblins isn't good in Legacy anymore. 33% of decks running Deathrite Shaman severely worsens their T1 Goblin Lackey. The deck is also ridiculously expensive since it requires Wastelands and often Rishadan Port
Merfolk definitely, it has the best lords by a mile and a powerful bomb in the form of Master of Waves. If you want Rats, there is a version of Monoblack Control that uses Pack Rat, but I'm not sure if that counts as tribal
This looks really cool. Personally I'd say that if you want to go monogreen, you want to go a bit more for the aggro/value route with Strangleroot Geist and Eternal Witness. Maybe add Nykthos and go for some kind of hybrid between Monogreen devotion and Pod.
This just happened on Cockatrice. I dropped the Platinum Angel while at 1 life, and bounced Stony Silence twice to get the fate counter + explosion. A few turns later he scooped to Academy Ruins + Wurmcoil Engine
For draw, instant vs sorcery doesn't matter THAT much for merfolk either. If you topdeck DTT there's a big chance you'll want to immediately play it anyways to get some creatures on the field asap.
I'm going to try 2x Cruise with four fetches for a bit. With lategame draw and graveyard filling I think fetches might be worth the lifeloss.
I think I'll try cutting both Solemn Simulacrums and a Repeal to try Urborg + 2 mainboard Dismember. I've always found the 4 cmc to be awkward even for how much value it gives
The problem with Delve cards is always that they nonbo with eachother. The more Delve cards you play the worse every next one will get. Nevertheless, if you run them as a 1 or 2-of they become ridiculous like 5/5 flying demons for BB. I can see Dig Through Time or Treasure Hunt be played as a 1-of in Utron but I wouldn't really know what to replace, probably a Thirst.
I've really been trying to cram an Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth into my deck for Dismember and the combo with Sundering Titan, but I just don't know what to cut. Cutting an island doesn't seem like a good idea and spellwise I don't really see any options either. I'm considering cutting the singleton Tec Edge because I hardly ever find myself fetching it (although I never really mind drawing it either).
What do you guys think? I know a lot of people have been experimenting with it
five mana is a huge investment, and with BGx decks getting popular its weakness to Abrupt Decay is quite troublesome. On top of that many decks already like to side in artifact hate against us so I don't think it's worth it
I personally just run 3 Fabricate, since it can always get what I need. But I assume your testing found that the bodies of treasure and trinket were worth it over sometimes not being able to fetch your most desired piece?
Woohoo I won a GPT with mono blue tron!
I played versus UR Delver (2-1), Melira Pod (2-0), UWR Control (2-0), Jund (2-0), draw to top 8, Dredgevine (2-0), UR Tempo Twin (2-0), GR Tron split prizes and byes, as I could not attend GP Stockholm. I could give you guys a matchup summary if you guys are interested. Overall I had no problems like people are mentioning here, like the deck being slow or not having a place in the meta etc. It's an excellent deck with a lot of outplay potential. I felt pretty chill with most matchups to be honest, got a little nervous in 3 games overall, last game versus Delver, first game versus Dredgevine and last game versus Twin. My list can be found here as well as the rest of the top 8 (I think we had a really cool top 8, very diverse.):http://www.decklists.net//index.php?option=com_ohmydeckdb&controller=deck&view=deck&deckId=28208
It is much more similar to nezeru's list instead of shoktroopa's list but they're both similar. Only change I would make is a second snap in the side over Metamorph but I couldn't find one. Hope we get Blue tron to Proven (tier 1)!
Very nicely done man, congratulations!
I have a few questions about your decklist:
1. it says you run 61 cards. Is this true and if so why?
2. why no Oboro? It doesn't seem to have any downsides running one.
3. A lot of decks run a singleton Cyclonic Rift mainboard. Why do you run it side? (so why not main and against what do you bring it in)
4. I love the Phyrexian Metamorph sideboard, against what do you use it?
5. Seeing the above questions just a general sideboard explanation might be interesting if you have the time
6. You run a lot of 1-ofs, which is rare for competitive decks normally. What's the purpose of 1 trinker/1 treasure/2 fabricate instead of just 4 fabricate or a 2 treasure/2fabricate split?
7. A singleton Snapcaster Mage over the fourth Remand strikes me as odd. Why exactly did you use that?
Match 1 2-0 versus Ad Nauseam combo
Game one I got Turn 4 tron, and fetched a Mindslaver turn 3 to play and activate it turn 4. Just in time for his Lotus Bloom to resolve to kill him with his own combo.
Game two went much longer, with Chalices on 0 and on 1. Again I ended up Mindslavering him to kill him with his own combo. Spell Burst was really good this game, countering four cards.
Match 2 2-0 versus WR Soul Sisters
Game one was really close but Wurmcoil Engine saved me.
Game two I put a Chalice on 1, to which he sighed and sacced his Martyr of Sands to reveal two soul sisters and two Serra Ascendants. Squadron Hawk kept him in the game for a while but then when he chumpblocked my Platinum Angel to kill it with Lightning Helix and I Remanded it he scooped.
Match 3 0-2 versus Jund
Game one I had no chance, I didn't draw more than three lands and he had two Goyfs, and even though I stalled him a while with Repeal and Remand I lost without getting anything on board.
Game two went on for a wile with me having three Condescends in the opening hand. Sundering Titan doing a lot of work, and I almost came back from a Liliana ultimate but he had too many answers; over the course of the game he had three Ancient Grudges and two Sowing Salts! After the match he showed me his sideboard; apparently his usual meta has a ton of tron and affinity so he brought in a playset of Sowing Salt and a playset of Ancient Grudges, I reall didn't stand a chance. I did make a misplay however, when not bouncing my Oboro to Liliana's ultimate.
Match 4 0-2 veruss Hatebear
Yeah this is pretty much the worst matchup UTron has. Game 1 I drew Wurmcoil but read off him that he had PtE so I waited two turns to Spell Burst it. With success, but a turn later he had a Flickerwisp and an Aven Mindcensor with a Sword of Fire and Ice on it doing more damage than I could gain back. I could've survived a few turns more but he got another path off the Sword to kill me.
Game 2 took FOREVER and had some really cool interactions. I Squelched two Ghost Quarters, Dismembered a Leonin Arbiter to search with Fabricate while predicting and bouncing the responding Aven Mindsensor, and bounced Stony Silence three times to re-germ my Batterskull. But he drew all of his four Paths, and ended up winning with a Return to the Ranks for six creatures.
MVP was definitely Chalice of the Void. I kind of regret not boarding it in versus Hatebear since locking him off path would probably have won me the game. It could maybe even be plaed mainboard since putting it on 1 or two basically hits every single Modern deck hard. I also took out Urborg for Spell Burst right before I went to FNM but in hindsight I kind of regret that; in three out of four matches the life loss was very significant. I think splashing a little bit more black just for Dismember and maybe Damnation could really work wonders
Considering you need multiple combo pieces and your opponent isnt going to sit there doing nothing until you have the combo, you really want some disruption and search
Serum Visions and Remand are always good for modern combo
If I'd splash in Utron I'd splash Black. We already run Dismember and Talisman of Dominance, Urborg combos pretty sick with Sundering Titan, and you get access to Thoughtseize, Disfigure, Drown in Sorrow, Damnation, and Smother. If you have a little money to spare, splash white for Path to Exile, Restoration Angel and Gavony Township. Very doable on a budget with Avacyn's Pilgrim.
This just happened on Cockatrice. I dropped the Platinum Angel while at 1 life, and bounced Stony Silence twice to get the fate counter + explosion. A few turns later he scooped to Academy Ruins + Wurmcoil Engine
I love this deck sometimes
I'm going to try 2x Cruise with four fetches for a bit. With lategame draw and graveyard filling I think fetches might be worth the lifeloss.
