I'll root for a Faithless Looting ban until the day it happens. I expect to only see Hogaak targeted bans next week but just maybe Hogaak was enough to make someone at RnD realize Looting has be the thorn in Modern for a very long time now.

I'm also incredibly disappointed that Magic Arena's Historic format got announced with he excitement of a wet fart without any old sets being brought in. I yearn for a new eternal format that isn't kept in a chokehold by the reserved list

For those looking for Jeskai to shine again, Druid combo abusing Giver of Runes and infect abusing Scale Up make Jeskai interesting again. Having a giant ball of spot removal is crucial against those decks and that has always been Jeskai's forte.

Yes, I would But yes, if you want your deck to be competitive, and your not using vial

You're not competitive without vial, full stop.

i know what you people are gonna say , but outside of vial and maybe prospector the best one mana spell i think is thoughtseize, ye its not a goblin and ringleader can show the awkward non goblin spell sometimes but its something decent to do on turn one and maybe slow the oponent, we just need like three turns before we put a lot of stuff on the field and discard spell works(srry for my english , i learn watching F.R.I.E.N.D.S....)

I currently have Thoughtseize as a sideboard card. I could see it as a mainboard inclusion, but it does have a lot of anti-synergy with cards like Aether Vial and Ringleader as well as being anti-tempo.

Unfortunately I still haven’t managed to build or test the deck, but are alternative one drops either mogg fanatic or fanatical firebrand. Both deal with mana dorks and can be cast off Vial if needed.

In regards to the silver bullets, aren’t we forgetting that we are still an Aggro deck. We have elements of a midrange deck, but we still want to close out the game early, but have some cards to aid the mid-to-late game. Therefore, should we still be playing the likes of goblin guide and goblin piledriver to apply as much early pressure as possible?

Also, I think thoughtseize is a brilliant sideboard card. Not convinced on its use in the main, as think there are better options.

The additions of Matron and Ringleader completely change what this deck was previously; pre-horizons Goblins was an aggro rushdown deck, whilst the new goblins I imagine will be much more midrange, comparable to Legacy goblins. Frankly, the old rushdown godlin lists do not interest me at all as it was just a worse humans/burn hybrid, whereas Ringleader and Matron give this deck a new angle that actually give them a reason to be played over humans. Because of this, I do see Piledriver to still have a role in the deck, but card disadvantage machines like Goblin Guide are definitely out.

I think we need to trust on Warren Instigator. For that, I will start testing Mogg Fanaticand Munitions Expertto open the path to the damage. I really believe in this way to make our little boys tier 1: Value is our word guys.
I dont know if this is the only way we have to face tier 1 decks right now,but I will bet for it. It works in Legacy, why not in modern?. We have the tools to take advantage, so lets go.
In a few days I will test the deck and I will post the list.

BTW: Thoughtseize on the Sideboard is a must have card IMO (3 copies)

EDIT: Also I will test 1x o 2x copies of Stingscourger

The discussion above was briefly about Frogtosser Banneret vs Warren Instigator, and Piney_Tinecones and I at least agree on that Frogtosser played out much better. Instigator dies too early and is blocked too easily, whilst off a vial Frogtosser can provide acceleration the same turn as you play him.

The original comparison was to Declaration in Stone, but Winds is just much better. Declaration gives your opponent the odds of drawing a relevant spell off your removal whilst Winds guarantees a land, and although Declaration could theoretically get multiple creatures off the board, Winds overload is just straight up an extra wrath.

However, I wouldn't run it over Oust, as I originally thought. Right now I actually have it over the third Wrath, to keep my curve lower whilst still having access to a lategame wrath if need be. With the cmc4 slot becoming incredibly crowded, that feels very good.

F2F Hamilton modern open was won by Hogaak, with two copies of the deck placing in the top 8.

The report says they were surprised it was not played more, being so dominant: "We had two copies of the deck in our Hamilton Top 8, and from where I’m sitting, that number is actually pretty low for how good this deck is compared to the rest of the format."

Either buy it now or sell it now, I'd say.

People are likely hesitant to buy in since it will very likely be banned. With Eldrazi, the opportunity cost of so many free wins was small since, other than Eye of Ugin, pretty much everything in the deck was dirt cheap and available in current Standard sets. If you don't have Vengevines, Bloodghasts, Bridges, Gravecrawlers, and Hogaak himself (in addition to the black fetchlands, you're looking at a LOT of money to buy into a deck that is very likely not set to live past July 8th.

It's a lot easier and faster to buy/sell/change decks on MTGO, but paper metas are much slower. Buying cards is a more weighty investment, and selling them is slow and arduous for most players. As a result, paper metas are often filled with Cards_I_Own.dec (also helping to contribute to the idea of "diversity").

This is definitely a thing, I expect a lot of people assume the deck will be gone in such a short timespan it's not worth investing money and time into; the deck is pretty hard to pilot optimally.

If WotC ruins modern for 3 months on July 8th, I expect the Hogaak share to explode

I do think you want 4 ringleaders because the card is absurd, at least in the 75 (I could see sideboarding one for grindy matchups). I probably do end up cutting down to fewer sling-gangs just out of necessity.

Tarfire is in there because as said, you just want something on turn 1. 10 cmc1 spells seems good, and tarfire kills manadorks quite well.

As for silver bullets, I am always of the opinion you want to not overdo it and be sparse with how many you run. but nevertheless with both ringleader and matron to churn through the deck it seems like a waste to not run some of them at the least. I currently run 4 bullets: Skirk Prospector, Chainwhirler, Trashmaster and Earwig Squad.

I playtested a bunch yesterday and the main issues for me is a. the lack of a good one drop and b. an abundance of powerful high cost cards. You want 4 ringleaders guaranteed, and then add 4 sling gang on top of that.. 8 4-drops is in the same ballpark as UW control plays! The 3-drop slot has the same issue, with Warchief, Chieftain, Matron and Pashalik Mons; currently I don't run any Pashalik Mons because of this, even though I really love the slinggang suicidebomb plan. And on top of that, you have to find room for bullet targets like Chainwhirler, Earwig Squad and Trashmaster which I do think validate a 1-of.

For my cmc1s I currently have 4 vials, 3 legion loyalis, 2 tarfire and 1 skirk prospector to tutor. I'm fairly satisfied with that, but it is definitely the weakest part of this deck's curve.

It seems really unlikely to me Hogaak doesn't get nuked, the more I've seen it in action the more it becomes clear it really is a league of its own compared to all of the other unfair decks in modern. I have some trips planned for upcoming larger tournaments, and if they goof banning Hogaak I'm just going to cancel those trips. There comes a moment where you can stop measuring with your thermometer because the house is clearly on fire.

maybe its utterly dominant or warping or whatever, but that would be what - 3 to 4 months total? in the grand scheme of things that is barely anything.

I don't know about you but if someone would prohibit me from doing something I love doing for 3-4 months, I would be pissed. Also, I haven't looked it up, but haven't we had fast bans like these before? I feel like Dig Through Time and Treasure Cruise were banned on a similar time scale.

Brought Back`is tough to evaluate, ramping two fetchlands or reanimating a planeswalker that just died seems incredibly sick. The floor on the card is doing absolutely nothing, however. High ceiling low floor cards tend to only be good when the payoff is very close to straight up winning the game.

In other news, Winds of Abandon has been good in my testing. Just as a singleton, having a card that is modal spot removal and wrath is just very useful. It also gives us something to do on turn 2.

Ringleader and the Horizon cards make me incredibly excited for goblins

The gameplan I was thinking of myself was playing the full playset of Sling-Gang Lieutenant, together with Legion Loyalist for a very likely turn 4 goldfish kill: swing with everything, deal first strike damage, then sac your entire board.

Hey all, I've been trying to find a modern deck that I love, and I for some reason picked up a mythic nahiri for my marsh flat... but thats besides the point. Is the old Nahiri list seeing any win's or is it pretty much all teferi and jace since his unbanning.

Nahiri Jeskai has been off the map for a while. In general, Jeskai has fallen out of favour for straight UW. Nahiri would still be fine for FNM though; I'm a big Nahiri fan and in my opinion as long as you have the proactive Nahiri wincon backed up by individually powerful cards you can't go too wrong.

I haven't looked at Nahiri for a while, but new cards like Narset and Force of Negation would definitely slide in that deck.

I was really rooting for it to have Flash as the keyword, but as a 5 mana sorcery I think you need to do a lot better in Modern

I'm curious if what y'all would think of for an updated Jeskai control list. Lightning Bolt is starting to look really appealing again, but it's been so long since I played, I'm not sure I'd trust anything I would put together. I've been playing a lot of Esper control, but that deck doesn't fit my play style. You don't really ever get to turn the corner and go on offense.

I'm on straight UW now since I think it's the best deck in the format right now (other than Hogaak of course), but I really miss my bolts. I experimented a bit with Geist of Saint Traft but then realized again that I just really loathe that card

As I said above I think the best way to approach Jeskai now is to look ath the UW Midrange decks and go from there, as adapting UW Control into Jeskai doesn't add that much and worsens your tron matchup. Restoration Angel has proven me time and time again that she is excellent right now, and I think that a build closer to Jeskai Flash could get some work done. We now also have Teferi Time Raveler to turn Spell Queller into a 2 for 1.

This set has a lot of power creeping one drops it feels like

UW Spirits is my pet deck and I've been looking for a good extra 1-drop to play, messed around with the mediocre Topplegeist a lot. This card is excellent.

New Sorin seems really cool in some Vampire aggro/midrange stuff to cheat out a 5-drop you could also play the normal way. Blood baron of Vizcopa is probably a good choice
