why hastn't anyone tried black red blue twin? I mean you have something like thoughtsieze and inquisition to proactively disrupt disruption and better removal with dismember and doom blade? still tempo with better disruption
4 bolt
4 serum visions
2 dismember
2 doom blade
4 twin
3 inquisition of kozilek
3 thought sieze
spellskite may be better maindeck instead of batterskull but i find twin pushes late game alot against a good opponent with good removal and batterskull is just gravy in attrition wars

• 60% of the pool split among all the players ending with 1 loss (3-1 or 2-1 score).
Anyone knows how to improve the match up against boros burn? It's so bad. What I've noticed tho is they usually have just 2 white sources the entire game (which is pretty short) so I'm going to test Contaminated Ground on the side. Here's what my SB would look like with it :
Interesting. I'm finally going to an FNM tonight, so I will see how it plays out. Like I said before, there aren't
many T1 decks where I play, but I hope to at least play someone competitive.
Haven't had the time to test it. Might be a bad idea but hey, what else can bring against a burn deck? Wen't 3-1 online on a private tourney and only lost to Boros burn (also lost last week against it) that's why I'm starting to think of a way to somehow improve this matchup. This was the list I brought on the tourney

Maybe Im wrong...but I feel like Nightveil Specter is inferior to Lifebane Zombie. Every since i cut specter, I feel as though the deck actualy performs better against the field as a whole. Sure Lifebane zombie cant steal a card away from mono blue devotion, but it does give us informtion, provide a 3/1 that cant be blocked...and lets face it, blue devotion is fairly light on removal, so ive had this guy beat face with delver style evasion :). Not that blue devotion is the only thing we see anymore, but its just an example. Ill agree that zombie does nothing against esper, but esper represents just a very small portion of the meta...and thats why we have a sideboard :). Nightveil specter to me always just seems like a bad card that provided 3 devotion, which was fine; but in my humble opinion, the gains from running zombie outweigh the losses from not running specter.
Someone mentioned valuable sideboard space...i agree with you to an extent. I say it that way because I am going to start splashing red for valuable tools against any orzhov deck. Once again, not that this is the only deck, but i do feel as though it does well in the mono black mirrorish matchups. Splashing red for mortars and slaughter games ONLY. We wont be running and MD red cards. Im hoping this can be sopported by running 4x temple of malice and 4x blood crypt. But push comes to shove...may i can add a poop guildgaet :-(. But anyway, i feel like our post board games against esper are pretty darn strong anyway with the addition of cards like duress. The decks that seems to give me the most trouble are the GR Domri shell decks...jund or gr which ever. Any MD advantage against these decks seems ok. Given more spots in the sb allows us to retool our removal packages to adapt to the changing meta.
One final note...at first I kind of felt like people were trying to be too cute by adding spalsh colors just because they could, but lately I can see doing so to narrow your strategies against certain decks. I feel like the core of this deck is so damn good anyway, that I am a little cautious about moving away from the mono black. I think splash options in the sb are fine, but the brutal consistantcy of MBD is why it remains the king of standard; to mess with such things could actually make this deck worse imo.
Pretty stock MBD nothing really new to see here. Just added slaughter games and mortars to the board and slightly changed the mana.
Before you stick your nose up against Pharika's cure, keep in mind that RDW is everywhere too in my game. Pharika's cure can give us a needed tempo boost.
It actually does work and it's pretty effective against U/W control. Read my post a few pages back, had 70% win rate with it. I ran 2 Mortars MD instead of devour flesh. 2 Mortars more and 3 Slaughter Games on the side.
Just a little bit of input on my red splash. Spent the entire day and a half testing on MTGO 2 man queues. won 19 matches out of 27 (70% winrate). Here's my partial match up analysis vs competitive decks
UW control (5-1) :
Slaughter Games is amazing against U/W control. I don't know if it's just luck but the 3 on my sideboard always showed up by turn 6 against azorius. Didn't even bother getting rid of their Revelations. Lost 1 match on game 3 because I was unable to remove a Jace onboard. I've always Kept my ultimate price and Lifebanes for Brimaz/Archangel (appeared only on 4 games out of 18)
SB : -4 Pack Rat , -2 Mizzium Mortars , -2 Bile Blight , +3 Duress , +1 Erebos, God of the Dead, +3 Slaughter Games , +1 Doom Blade
Orzhov (4-0) :
Mizzium Mortars is really good against a BBoV (can sometimes 2 for 1). I wish this card was instant.
SB : -2 Gray Merchant of Asphodel , -1 Lifebane Zombie , -1 Underworld Connections , -1 Pack Rat, +1 Erebos, God of the Dead , +2 Mizzium Mortars , +2 Dark Betrayal
I'm going to update my post later for mirror, RDW, RW burn and mono U. Only faced 2 G/R monsters so I can't say much about the match up. Hopefully I get to face more tomorrow as I intent to spend the entire day again on 2 mans. The next day, after some adjustments based on the data I had gathered I'm taking this list on all the scheduled standard dailies.
The problem with Rakdos's Return is it is too slow for control. I'd rather have Slaughter Games on the side. I've considered green but we don't have a BG scry land yet. Gonna drop the dreadbores and go back to 2 Ultimate Price mainboard but I'm gonna keep the mortars as hits Blood Baron. Dropping 3 mind rots for 3 slaughter games on the side.
I've been testing this list. So far so good. Mind Rot somewhat improves my games against RW burn (this deck is just too good against midrange decks) and control. Never experienced any mana screws so far.
Hello there. I'm playing UW control right now but lately, I've been thinking of switching over to MBD. What do you guys think? What deck is the most consistent in a mostly tier 1 deck meta? How about aggro heavy meta?
I recently made that switch (though I'm splashing two colors) and I'm loving it. Mono-B just has better matchups than UW.
I've finally decided to switch over to MBD. Had couple extra event tickets on mtgo after selling my Jace's and Revelations.
Noticed a couple of things. First one is mono black seems to be weaker than U/w control against hyper aggressive decks (RW burn, RDW etc). RDW and other creature based aggro decks has never been a problem for me with UW, just RW burn.
Second is Pack Rat. I don't know about you guys but it seems pretty weak for me. I almost always take 4 out against pretty much anything on game 2. I've been looking for a 2 cmc replacement for him but I can't find any. It seems this card is only being played because there are no other options?

Bingo. Adrian Sullivan uses it to save his Elspeth, bounce D. Sphere on the stack targeting something (upgrades it into "2WUU exile target permanent, return to your hand") and so on.
I'm not sold on it as a 1-of but I'm sure he mises people with it all the time.
i dont completely understand the d sphere stack trick..
can someone explain it?
1 D Sphere enters the battlefield
2 ETB ability goes on the stack
3 In response, Disperse the Sphere
4 Disperse resolves first, Sphere goes to hand
5. ETB ability from Sphere resolves, exiles non-land permanent
6. Since there is no original Sphere, permanent can't come back
No. More like (assuming opponent does nothing)
1. Detention sphere resolves
2. Detention sphere ETB goes on the stack
3. You play X targeting Detention Sphere
4. X resolves, Detention Sphere goes back to your hand/goes to the graveyard/gets exiled
5. Detention Sphere's 'leave the battlefield' ability trigers (which returns no permanent because ETB hasn't resolved yet)
6. ETB ability resolves, exiling Detention Sphere's target.
There is no "original Sphere, permanent can't come back" thing, what happens is that the 'leave the battlefield' ability resolves before the ETB ability.
