    Umm... rather just play Fluctuator?

Nope. Fluctuator doesn't reduce the colored mana cost of cycling, whereas this one removes it completely.

    Well that is certainly interesting.
A 3/4 flyer for 5, that o-rings something. And can be resurrected from the graveyard as a zombie angel... is this the first time Zombie Angel has ever been an actual creature type on something?

Also I just noticed that angel looks male, have we ever had an actual male angel in MtG before?

Yes, two times - Gabriel Angelfire and Malach of the Dawn

And Melesse Spirit, you have to look at the actual card to see the male feature.

It's curious that they'd use Angel here, because I remember back in Kamigawa block they said they'd develope "Angel-Like" cards base on the plane's culture, hence Kamigawa had spirits instead of Angel. How does the lore fit here?

Not that these two are the 3rd and 4th male angel of the game.

Saw this in Magic General, thought it was relevant to post here:

    MaRo's tumblr

zwomally asked: We have another Standard environment with a top level Lilliana and Gideon. I get you want to push the Gatewatch but the same ones is a little tiring.

When we started with the Gatewatch storyline, we began with the assumption that the Gatewatch, the core five, at least, should always be represented on planeswalker cards in Standard. (And remember Standard was 18 months at the time.) As we started to roll this plan out, we got feedback from many of you that this was problematic.

Yes, you wanted Gatewatch planeswalkers but we didn’t need to do them so often. You wanted the opportunity to see other favorites return or have new planeswalkers in some of those slots.

We heard you, but we work far ahead so there’s always a gap before you can see us react to feedback. Hours of Devastation was the first set that we could revamp how we did this. So starting with Hour, we’ve pulled back significantly on how often Gatewatch planeswalkers appear. They’ll appear when it’s important but at a much slower rate. We will use those slots instead to do more returning and new planeswalkers.

Good news for story's sake. I'm sure they were hoping the Gatewatch would be mainstream and loved, but the members just lack that charm. They could've use the Tamiyo story group, it would've been much more attractive.

Phyrexian Plaguelord equals infinite Damnation for opponents creatures..this is actually sick!!!!

Kuro, Pitlord probably needing reanimate type spells to get this bad boy into play. Generally removing everybody creatures, while making tons for yourself seems like fun. Probably want some life gain with creatures coming into play to help this combo, like Essence Warden and Grim Feast.

    Minister of Pain
    Disciple of Tevesh Szat
Tourach's Chant - heavy green metas.

I think "target creature gets -1/-1 until end of turn" is different from "putting one or more -1/-1 counter on target creature". Is there an errata I'm unaware of?

That said, Plaguelord is a good sac outlet for creature removal.

    Zur Cycling decks

Using Astral Slide and sutch cards

That is a Holy Molly grand idea, consider Amonkhet's addition to cycling cards. What other cards, aside from Astral Slide, would you put in such a deck?

Derevi, Empyreal Tactician is 3cc (4 mana activation) and extremely hard to remove, can be competitive with most cards costing less than 5. You don't need to play infinite combo to utilize him fully either.

Athreos, God of Passage is low cost, hard to remove, and doesn't require a tribal (although Cleric seems popular with him)), can be played with various theme such as combat, life drain, stax, and reanimation.

Yasova Dragonclaw isn't on the hard to kill side, but she provides versatility with both offense and utilities by stealing opponents' creatures. I made a deck on Cockatrice emphasizes on utility creature mostly with 2 power or less, but also able to pump them to 4 to trigger many "ferocious" effects. The deck also has a sub "land matters" theme to it. I'd put Shu Sun, the Silent Tempest and Alesha, Who Smiles at Death are both good with smaller curve decks.

You really need to play ALL the mana accelerates in my opinion to fit Kozi 2.0 into the deck. So Mana Vault, Mox Diamond, Chrome Mox, etc. Too be honest I have no idea how you actually gain advantage through Hazoret the Frevent as your general if you're not attacking with her? The discard ability seems on the very under-powered side to warrant a mono-red deck. I suspect its why this brew won't actually come together as anything serious.

Now in a multicolored brew with her in the 99 and Training Grounds, I could see some sort of draw 7 deck (Windfall, Wheel of Fortune, etc), that aims to empty the hand and refill Smile

I didn't say don't attack with Hazoret, I said attack only when situation is in need of it, as with all generals. Hazoret has the option of sniping with direct damage (w/ or w/o infect attached).

But you raised an interesting perspective with mana artifacts. Decks that run multiple (if not numerous) mana artifacts tend to run out of cards in hand until drawn, Hazoret benefits from the low hand size. Red draws like Outpost Siege allow Hazoret to maintain that low hand size but still able to cast spells. Perhaps it's beneficial to have many mana rocks in Hazoret variants.

Its 1 or fewer, so could of course attack next turn no matter what the next card is following turn, but you'd have a zero-one CMC deck, so could rumble in every turn.

Gustha's Scepter is a card I use in my Kozilek, the Great Distortion to get my hands size down.

Would Kozi 2 be a good inclusion here? While it draws you back to 7 cards, you can pitch them to either counter a spell or with Hazoret for damage, when attacking isn't favorable.

Like Purphoros, I don't think Hazoret needs to attack unless it's benefitial, so were shouldn't be in a hurry to rid the hand of cards. Her attacking and blocking should be an extra bonus when we're low on hands.

Well, if you want a commander that generates snakes with deathtouch, I think Hapatra is better than Pharika at least.

Does she trigger off of creatures entering the battlefield with -1/-1 counters on them like Deity of Scars?

Yes she does, which makes her perfect for persist as well. (I hope there are ten viziers in this set)

Insult // Injury and Onward // Victory are both going into my Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest deck, double the prowess, quadruple the damage!

It's always good to see a Golgari general who's NOT a graveyard focused one, although it doesn't hurt to have some.

As many pointed out, Persist and Infect are great with her, and anything with proliferate. Fevered Convulsions is an expensive but limitless -1/-1 counter distributer, Glistening Oil is another slow but persistent generator, Incremental Blight can dish out massive number of counters, Shambling Swarm and Skinrender are two sides on the same coin. Aboroth is a weird choice that put counters on itself but numerously.

Tribal snake cards would make the swarm that much more deadly.

Attrition allow all the snakes you make to become snipers. Skullclamp is an obvious fodder.

This... is actually a pretty darn good point. I think all of my monuments will end up in on-color decks, but that is certainly a thing to keep in mind when I build my next creature-spam deck (as I inevitably will).

I'm sure some of your 34 EDH decks could use the Monument even if the color is off. XD

Other ways to use the monuments: Karador, Ghost Chieftain allow one to cast creature from graveyard, Silas Renn, Seeker Adept with artifact creatures (which can be bounced/casted for free when set up), Athreos, God of Passage makes death-return even more painful, etc.

I presume Bolas created Amonkhet gods with respective power/ideals that would aid the culture of trial and ascendency.

I enjoyed the story today, because Gideon isn't the first person I know who developed faith in one thing, believe it's everything, then lost it all together, only to gain it back, that's the definition of herohood in Joseph Campell's Hero with a Thousand Faces, you can see examples in popular novels like Lord of the Rings.

Gideon WANTS to believe in the greater good, and it's not the first time he sees his companions, the Jacetice League, acting out of control and unity. As a trained soldier practicing hieromancy, it's a wonder Gideon tolerates them this long, his conviction for good is the only motive that keeps him going. Despite him traveling between planes, Gideon at heart is still a Thero citizen, he wants to adore an ideal, a divinity of that ideal, now he found it: Oketra, God of Unity, embedded everything he wanted in a perfect, living form.

That said, it's quite possible that Gideon's story may end in tragedy as many heroes would. Am I the only person feeling that Gideon would leave the Gatewatch and serve Bolas? What is hieromancy, if not the practice of rules, created by the societal elite? Those who compel to follow rules to the last letter, tend to desire power to "write" rules themselves.

Isn't Gideon more of a spirit-of-the-law than a letter-of-the-law guy? He's very much in the good camp of lawful good, and the only way he'd serve Bolas would be if he were forced to via mind control.

The power of hieromancy, as explained by his teacher, symbolizes the strength of societal agreed rules. Even if a villain doesn't abide the laws, they recognizes the consequences and its proximity to be affected by it. If a society believes backstabbing is the norm and has no laws protecting people against it, hieromancy cannot work, much like Gideon cannot impose Zendikar rules on Eldrazis, because there's none to apply.
