    2/2

1W: Target creature you control becomes an Aura enchantment with enchant creature. Attach it to ~. You may pay 1R to end this effect.

If a card with flying is attached to ~, ~ has flying. The same is true for first strike, double strike, deathtouch, haste, hexproof, indestructible, lifelink, menace, reach, trample, and vigilance.

~ gets +1/+1 for each aura attaches to it.

When faith of many becomes one

    ———————

The wordings on Acordia mimics cards like licids and vehicles.

Licids (such as Calming Licid) are creatures that could turn into an aura, and vehicles are non-creature with combat abilities (for example, Aethersphere Harvester has flying). Combat keywords stay on vehicles even when they’re not crewed.

Therefore, I believe it’s legal to have a creature turn into an aura with its combat keywords intact, and allow Acordia to feed off on them. If a judge saw otherwise, please let me know.

Unlike bestow, these creature-turn-aura don’t become creatures after the host dies, but you can end the effect in response to destruction.

Acordia’s activation requires W, while ending the effect takes R, implying white’s element of uniting people while red promotes individuality, an eternal struggle within a religion.

You guys are correct. The reminder text doesn't say it, but the official rule dictates that both creatures need to be under your control. I will change the wording.

    Artifact - Equipment

When ~ is attached to a creature, put a detain counter on that creature and up to one other creature an opponent controls.
Whenever ~ becomes unattached from a permanent, remove all detain counters from all permanents.

As long as a creature has a detain counter on it, they can't attack or block, and their activated abilities can't be activated.

    Equip 3

Due to lack of funding, Azorius lawmagi had retorted to sharing a single cuff with their arrestee until they’re both in custody.

    ———

The effect of Azorius Runecuffs is almost identical to the Detain mechanic, I wrote it out so it would last indefinitely, instead of ending at the beginning of your next turn.

"Becomes unattached" means that if you equip Runecuffs to another creature, all detain counters are also removed.

EDIT: Changed wording so it no longer grants soulbond, but functions similarly. Wording borrowed from Grafted Exoskeleton.

So I'm liking the idea, but the payoff cards are the holdup for me here.

It may be possible to loop cards with a combo, but what cards are worth looping when buyback cards seem to be better. Brazen borrower could be capsize, bonecrusher giant could be searing touch, embereth shieldbreaker could be shattering pulse, hypnotic sprite could be forbid, murderous rider could be slaughter, and so on and so on. There will need to be a dedicated commander adventure deck that supplies us with dedicated multiplayer adventure cards for a significant impact.

I think this would still be very fun to play. Adding creature sacrifice effects means it could be more like an aristocrats/blood artist deck, using the loops for control and building up. Kess would be great at enabling bitter ordeal kills. Unfortunately the best engine to make this sort of combo work was paradox engine, but now all casual/fun brews with that fun ship sank.

Are there any easy repeatable ways to make Kess a new permenant with the adventure cards so you can use her more than once a turn?

I think the deck composition would still certain around value spells, with Adventures being convenient looping spells in the long run. In other words, most of the deck would still be instant/sorcery to support Kess, so aristocrats approach might be a bit lacking unless you're going for a token generation Kess (which is doable as well). If I were to bring Adventure creatures back, I'd have Altars/Tower ready to sac them for mana. Brazen borrower is likely going to be the key trigger for Equilibrium due to flash.

So the loop might go: Adventure (Hand) -> Adventure (Grave) -> Adventure Creature (Exile) -> Bounce/Sac -> Repeat.

I think this approach would have more usage in 1v1 than against multiple opponents. Less disruption, more board presence (but not combat centric), and only one opponent to target removals on.

Y'all know they been doing ~50% return planes, new planes since Scars of Mirrodin right?

I should probably rephrase: When I said old, I meant "overused", losing freshness, visited too frequently within short time span. Theros on second visit still has some freshness. Dominaria had always been a lot more diverse and historically intriguing (no pun intended) and it's set centuries after the war, which made returning to it a new experience.

    Quote from Xcric »

not just that, but do commander players even care what plane we visit? format doesn't really impact the popularity of a set, or the desire to return to it... the cards do.

Then you have a very skewed view on who we are. I am all for lore expansion and intriguing mechanics, which makes visiting new planes very exciting, especially for continuing MtG timeline.

Every plane deserves at least two visits, some planes like Ravnica deserves 3 thanks to being the focal point of a saga. Zendikar in this case, I can't think of a story that would prompt a revisit so soon, and it flunked badly last time, so it feels tiresome to go there again.

So a while back I asked a question in Ruling forum in regards to casting Adventure (or its creature counterpart) from places outside of my hand: https://www.mtgsalvation.com/forums/magic-fundamentals/magic-rulings/814013-adventure-and-haakon

    The conclusion appears to be:

Now, under the reworked 601.3e, you just check legality based on what you actually want to do, rather than go through those hoops. Makes a lot more sense.

Example: Garruk’s Horde says, in part, “You may cast the top card of your library if it’s a creature card.” If you control Garruk’s Horde and the top card of your library is a noncreature card with morph, you may cast it using its morph ability.

Example: Melek, Izzet Paragon says, in part, “You may cast the top card of your library if it’s an instant or sorcery card.” If you control Melek, Izzet Paragon and the top card of your library is Giant Killer, an adventurer creature card whose Adventure is an instant named Chop Down, you may cast Chop Down but not Giant Killer. If instead you control Garruk’s Horde and the top card of your library is Giant Killer, you may cast Giant Killer but not Chop Down.

In other words, since Kess, Dissident Mage let you cast instant or sorcery from your graveyard once per your turn, you can technically cast Adventures from the dead as well. And, if you have a sac outlet like Ashnod's Altar/Phyrexian Tower you can sac an Adventure creature and cast it again from grave. When we return those creatures from their respective Adventure, we could pay 1 extra for Equilibrium to bounce another Adventure creature back to hand for usage, somewhat bypasses Kess's restriction.

Kess is known to be a spellsling value commander, creature is usually the minority of the deck, though with the new Adventure creature we could now have some board presence, aiming for more longevity. I don't mind saccing the said creatures for mana then cast other spells also. I wonder if this would be a fun alternative approach for her.

I sometimes like to build things counter to regular expectations. Also, any Commander can be a Voltron Commander.

I mean, if you get down to it, you could make essentially a venn diagram of all the colors, and see how their overlaps would show what the strengths of the colors would be.

Building the deck first is not always a bad idea. my Trostani deck only picked Trostani as the commander after about 2/3 of the deck was built. It was built as a lands-matter deck to be centered around Glacial Chasm. As I started building the deck, there was a lot of ramp and playing extra lands, so I wanted landfall triggers - most landfall makes creature tokens - And then entered Trostani - Worked well with tokens, and would give me the life needed to get the time to find the chasm, and to pay for the upkeep.

If you wanted pure expectations on colors, here we go:

COLOR - EXPECTATION - ALTERNATE IDEA
W - Some kind of white weenie/token swarm deck. Mobilization/Heliod stuff. Alternate: Artifact recursion control/combo.
U - Hard Control. Everyone expects counter heavy, card draw, grind. Possibly even mill/draw/deck ideas. Alternate: Make sea creature tribal. Go for the big fish.
B - Graveyard loops/Blood Artist/Gray Merchant of Asphodel kills. Alternate: Make them discard their hand. Specters everywhere.
R - Artifact Recursion. Feldon/Daretti/Goblin Welder. OR Goblins. Alternate: Set everything on fire. I mean everything
G - Ramp Ramp Big beats. Or elves. Alternate - Hurricane.

    COLOR - WHAT PEOPLE EXPECT.
WU - Tokens and control. Detain. Police. No fun for anyone. Kill everything, counter the rest. Grand Arbiter Augustion
WB - Tokens. Sac outlets. Teysa. Grave Pact effects. Life drain and life steal.
WR - Aggro. Either wide and hard, or something with high power/low life early on, trying to kill someone early. Maybe even some land D to seal the deal on the rest.
WG - Long game. Recursion central. Good luck killing their board, and when you do, it'll just come right back. Incremental value, great removal.

UB - Control and Remove all threats. Flashback to do it again. Cheap creatures with draw to refill the hand as they tear you apart.
UR - Storm. It might not use storm cards, but they're going to cast 20 spells in a turn, and then you'll be dead.
    UG - +1 counters. Everywhere.

BR - Aggro again, but with more expendable creatures and self-sac effects.
    BG - Graveyard's coming back.

RG - Creatures go sideways, with more Overrun.

Thank you for a detailed post.

Every color could be combo-licious. The more experienced my opponent is, the more likely that's the case even if s/he plays white or red.

If I hear anybody playing mono red, that's likely going to be damage based, combo based (involving damage usually), or chaos effect.

If Black/Red, there's chance for chaos and group-slug.

If blue/black, then I expect reactive play with counterspells, mill, and/or hand-denial via wheel effect.

Me when I hear about Return to Theros and yet another Zendikar:

"Boring. Guess it's time to quit buying and just play with the cards I already own."

Magic announces more Commander products that sound amazing. Me:

    "I AIN'T QUITTIN' YOU!!!"

Maybe that's why they dare to return to old places (again), knowing that commander players will pay the bill this year.

My all-time favorite depiction of Jeska has to be this fan art by fellow MTGS user merkymerx though:

I wish I could get a Jeska card with that artwork...

It's good to see muscles on a warrior woman. Seriously, why is it so hard for MtG artists to show women's abs, especially if they are wielding huge weapons?

Am I the only one who's worried about the 70+ brand new legends? Commander products in the past had 16~20 new legends each year, they're literally putting three plus years worth of ideas into this one, and that's not counting the Commander Legend decks. And if they continue with this trend, well of creativity will run dry quickly.

    Another interesting detail:

The frieze on Elspeth's card shows the planeswalker hitting Heliod (on the right) in the same fashion as she did with Xenagos (on the left)...

Is it part of the previous storyline and I missed it or is it new?

I guess the one yet to come, as her moniker would suggest.

And I love that even her statue depicts the pierced crack in her armor where Heliod originally struck her.

Though, the weapon Elspeth used to kill Xenago shouldn't be the same as the one she used to kill Heliod, I'd think. Xenago was killed by Godsend, the one struck Heliod appear to be a modified version, perhaps a gift from Erebos/Phenax? Didn't Ashiok want to know the fear of a god? I can imagine all that dread Heliod would have when a mortal take vengeance on him. (Here I thought Ashiok would stay on the Meditation Realm to suck on Bolas's eternal torment)

Why do people have to leak this early? Like, do they really enjoy the power to violate merchandise?
