No. Verduran Enchantress triggers on the casting of an enchantment. By the time Treachery resolves and you control her the trigger will have long since past.

They will trigger. At no time while on the battlefield will they not be creatures so they trigger Purphoros.

Okay, awesome. But what about illegal mana abilities? 717.1 says nothing about mana abilities that have been illegally activated. For example:

I have a Lion's Eye Diamond on the battlefield and a Progenitus in my hand. I announce a spell, then during the time where I activate mana abilities, I use the mana ability of Lion's Eye Diamond to pay for that spell, discarding Progenitus shuffling Progenitus into my library.

Would I do nothing to reverse the action (other than returning the spell to my hand)?

Well you can't do this to begin with as Lion's Eye Diamond must be activated as an instant. Assuming you could then yes you would return the spell to your hand and leave Lion's Eye Diamond resolved with progenitus shuffled into your library since a card moved to the library and your library was shuffled.

Oh and Batterskull. Not sure how I forgot about that little guy. He also conveniently stops Lifebane from swinging.

  • posted a message on Zero Toughness
Well technically the creature isn't destroyed (which is why having 0 toughness affects Indestructible creatures), but it will die. Whenever a creature has 0 or less toughness it is immediately placed into its owner's graveyard.

  • posted a message on Sudden Spoiling
The creature will lose protection. Gaining and losing abilities is applied in time stamp order so since Spoiling was cast last it will lose all abilities and be a 2/4 creature. If you were to have a way to equip at instant speed then the player could activate the equip ability after Sudden Spoiling was cast and regain the protections.

Well it depends on your meta and exactly what your goal is with the lifegain. If you are trying to gain life from damage then Sun Droplet is sometimes used against decks like burn. It is particularly good in multiples. If Lifebane Zombie is the issue then Kitchen Finks can come down the turn before him and if it's an issue you can always IoK the zombie out of hand. Vampire Nighthawk is not a terrible option, but it is typically not run mainly because it is an x/3 and bolt is everywhere.

  • posted a message on Volatile Rig
Unfortunately you will always resolve the Volatile Rig trigger first. When you cast Shrapnel Blast you put the spell on the stack first and then pay costs (like sacrificing a creature) so when the Volatile Rig dies the Shrapnel Blast is already on the stack and it will go on top of it.

I'm a little unclear on the exact timing on what you are doing in example 1, but if what you are doing is putting the ability on the stack then untap then activate again and then blink the coffin without any of the activations resolving then yes they will both be permanently exiled. This works in a similar way to the Fiend Hunter Restoration Angel combo from standard last season.

    Example 2 is correct.

Diffusion sliver and the land may be enough to help legacy meathooks, but they probably won't do enough for modern. Sliver aggro might work... But I doubt it. I think the most interesting card for eternal formats is going to be Return to the Ranks. Its a potential combo enabler and it gives extra reach to aggro and vial tempo decks. Granted I see it mostly as a sideboard card, but oh so many sideboards it can round out.

This gives me a terrible idea deck using the combo of Melira, Sylvok Outcast, Safehold Elite, a sac outlet, and a Soul Warden. Using Congregation at Dawn in response to dredging as a tutor for the combo and the Narcomoebas to convoke Return to the Ranks.

If we use Blood Artist instead of Soul Warden we can make the combo an infinite damage kill and we can use Immortal Servitude as additional copies of Return to the Ranks since the entire combo will be 2-drops.

You are not required to appeal. A lot of people "know" that the judge's ruling is wrong, but most of the time the judge is in fact correct. If they required a person to appeal in this case then they might as well just start at the head judge.

Am I one of the only people that foresees bant slivers being a viable deck? Diffusion, bone scythe, predatory, manaweft, galerider, hivelord.... a bunch of rainbow lands... seems good to me.

The problem is UWx control decks will destroy them. They aren't fast enough to kill before Verdict drops and even if you get Hivelord out they can use D-Sphere/Banishing Light.

Cord of calling can get your lord out before turn 4. Diffusion protects from early spheres/lights.

Also, with that logic "uw/x will destroy" any deck.

The main problem with any control deck in a format with limited cycling is that it requires a certain kickstart, and if you hiccup once the tempo lost is astronomical.

That being said, I think the "biggest" problem a sliver deck in standard has is the domino effect. Once you get one down, the others tend to fall a lot easier.

Unless you have your lord out.

Other decks get around it by being faster, more resilient, or just taking the problem cards out of the control players hand. With Slivers in order to get full value you are almost forced to overextend and yes you can certainly beat control sometimes, but often it will be tough and requires a Diffusion Sliver. If you can go Galerider->Diffusion->Muscle Sliver then you are in a strong position to knock off the remaining life points with mutavaults even if they wipe the board. But if you don't have Diffusion or have a slightly slower start then they can gain so much tempo through Azorious Charm, Devour Flesh, Doom Blade, Last Breath that when you drop your hand they have had all the time they need to drop an Elspeth for chump blockers or wipe the board away.

Caleb Durward does videos over at Channelfireball.com that playtests banned Modern cards. He recently did a video on Stoneforge Mystic.

It was a small sample size and some of the decks were not Tier 1, but it seemed like the card could be okay. I've definitely seen players do more powerful things by turn 3. (My opponent tonight had 2 6/6 flying lifelink creatures by turn 3. Damn you Serra Ascendants and Martyr of Sands.) Whenever I play vs. Amulet, it seems like he is trying to go off by turn 3.

I don't think Combo for the most part cares about Stoneforge Mystic. Control probably doesn't care about it too much, although it can get annoying in long, "attrition" type games. Aggro gets worked over by Batterskull, but honestly they should have some sort of creature removal to slow it down. Aggro is already in a ad place anyway, so I don't think Stoneforge Mystic will do much more. Maybe it will be the final nail? (like Standard before) But I will say that having Stoneforge Mystic in the format would open up different possiblities in decks.

Please share your thoughts. Here's the link.
    http://www.channelfireball.com/videos/the-banned-series-stoneforge-mystic/

Combo doesn't really care about Stoneforge which is mostly true. However control cares very much about it. Modern doesn't have a lot of card draw in its control decks and card that will always two for one someone is very powerful. I'm not saying it will insta gib control decks the moment it is played, but they play only so many answers and both halves of this card must be answered quickly.
Aggro and midrange are probably weaker to the card in general. T3 Batterskull against Wild Nacatl is very one sided and in midrange being able to tutor up lifelinking vigilance or unblockability/card advantage is huge.

SFM is sort of like Jace, the Mind Sculptor in that their brokenness is somewhat subtle. Yes they can be answered and yes the game will go on after they drop, but most of the time the game is really over.

Yeah, but when they get 6 mana they drop Hive Mind to kill you or a Prime Time to swing for 8 and essentially kill you. No real point in getting to 6 mana for something that doesn't win.
