  • posted a message on BNG booster box/Basic land replaced with common foils
It has to do with the way the collation machines operate. The part of the machine that distributes basic lands either ran out or jammed. It's extremely costly to shut those machines down, so rather than that they are programmed to distribute the next most significant card that would result in a pack having the proper number. The possibilities were the four foils, rares, mythics, and tips/tokens. Someone getting two tip cards might be annoyed, so to avoid customer dissatisfaction without increasing production costs foil commons went out.

My guess is this happened at shift change and someone didn't catch up with their machines in time.

Quality control has gotten better, which is why these sorts of things happen less frequently than in the past. I remember one guy getting a box of Revised that had 3 uncommons (with the occasional basic land) and 12 rares in each pack. These days the machines are probably programmed to just shut down in the event the supply of commons or uncommons available to it run out. Though in theory if everything but foil mythic rares ran out they could continue to produce 15 card packs of just those.

EDIT: Awesome finding that box by the way.

Depending on age as well. I've seen quite a few people here in Kansas wear them, but they're all at least in their mid-70s, usually around 90 years old.

As for the topic, game store environments are going to reflect what the owner really wants. The one I frequent is run by a guy whose first priority is ensuring the environment is suitable for children of any age. As such, there's absolutely no foul language or the barest hint of any kind of bullying tolerated. And it works. Many of the people that started playing over a decade ago now bring their spouses and kids with them to FNM. The little kids play the arcade games and the spouses sit in the back room and drink coffee or tea and play some other card game or just talk. He's got more customers now than he ever has.

As for the smell a few people invariably introduce... He took to polishing all the furniture with lavender oil every night after cleaning. It works wonders. Creative solutions.

    CMU Draw Go

This deck is special to be honest.
Of course, as on older player, I am used to discard, counter magic and removal. Eternal formats are my formats of choice and prison archetypes are my passion (Mulfatto Workshop, Lands etc). I get bored when formats degenerate into creature smash fests. Usually what keeps players out of older formats aside from cost is the idea that the gameplay is too abrupt.

A bit special, but not the only time a deck like that popped up, and not even the worst. Back when standard was 7th Edition/Invasion/Planeshift/Apocalypse/Odyssey this is the deck I played:

It started out as a fairly standard mill deck with three Millstone. I refined until it went from three, to two, to one copy, and finally what you see above. Here was the win condition: mill my opponent to death one draw at a time. And it was amazingly effective. While it was standard legal, I only ever lost three matches.

    1. My opponent got mana-screwed with his opening hand and ended up mulliganing down to one card out of frustration. Because I was playing first, I had to mulligan to no cards so I wouldn't draw on an empty library first. He ended up with better draws than me.
    2. A new guy with a 78 card deck that was literally almost nothing but the contents of six random booster packs.
    3. Someone with almost the exact same idea as me. After that, I sideboarded for not just W/G weenie decks, but my own as well.

Interesting. I wonder if the cards are banned because they're too strong and could break stuff or if its just because they'd be confusing.

Perhaps they'll effectively be proxies for P9 cards and the like. Non-tournament legal complies with the reserved list nonsense.

It'd be a far more effective response to counterfeiting and illegal proxies than those silly little hologram stickers they're adding with the new frame and get them some revenue out of all of it.

Would that really count as "new" cards though? If they wanted to print Power 9 proxies they could just print the Power 9 with gold borders or what have you.

I suspect the 13 illegal cards will have some new mechanic that they don't want in Vintage for non-power-related reasons. Something that will be banned on the same grounds as Shahrazad or the manual dexterity or ante cards (but not necessarily identical to any of those things).

Most likely. It was a nice thought though, but if you insist on crushing dreams... :p

You probably already know, but please be aware when you stop taking this medication, your appetite will return in force and unless you're careful you'll not only gain back the weight you lost, but a substantial amount more, which can greatly increase the risk of diabetes. For many people that amounts to having a good number of years chopped off their lifespan.

I genuinely don't understand that reaction some people have.

If you aren't attracted in that way, then it isn't a distraction. If you are attracted that way, then you're gay too and doesn't that make you a distraction as well by the same logic?

Its not necessarily the player himself being a distraction to the locker room, but ANY media circus can disrupt the preparation and day to day grind of a professional sports team

I hadn't ever thought about it that way. Although, as far as I can tell, said sports teams gleefully exhibit all manner of drug users, philanderers, spousal abusers, and cheats without compunction which attract as much of a media circus as anything. If being romantically attracted to someone of the same gender is a sin in and of itself and those running the sports businesses had an inherent moral objection to this, they would expel all those players who conduct themselves in the other behaviors mentioned. Otherwise they're just hypocrites. Sinners are one thing, but no one has any obligation to give anyone the time of day who is engaged in hypocrisy. Glass houses and casting stones and all that, you know.

I, for one, don't have the time or money for such a thing but would really love to have something like this.

The guy said he did almost all the work himself, so I'd bet you'd be surprised how affordable the room itself was. If he made an effort to find lumber, paint/varnish/stain, etc. on sale, I'd guess there's $5k tops in it (the collection is an entirely different matter, but if its acquisition was spread over two or three decades, the yearly input might not have actually been out of reach for many). Now the time it takes to build something like that oneself is another matter and at least in the photos it appears extremely well done, so he must have taken quite a bit.

I do know one guy who is going to purchase an old downtown row building in a town near where I live and refurbish it into a gaming lounge with an emphasis on magic. He's planning on finishing the outside with a Benalish theme, the ground floor Llanowar, the basement Thran, the top floor Tolaria, and making the roof a patio styled with elements of Kjeld. Oh, and the bathroom is Urborg.

Such things don't surprise me. As games like D&D and M:tG age the playerbase ages with them. People who started playing when they were kids find themselves with much larger disposable incomes in adulthood and you get projects such as these. Look at all the people who have built rooms themed after old muscle cars, baseball, pinball, etc. from the baby boomer generation. I'll bet in ten to twenty years we'll start to see similar things with World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy.

No. None of us nor any of our descendants will ever under any circumstance in any way, shape, or form be a god. Jim Jones and Mao Zedong are perfect examples of this and why having a god-complex doesn't equate into the real thing. No one is ever going to have a better run at doing so than those two men or others like them and no amount of scientific knowledge can alter the outcome.

This is not intended to be a conflict, but I have a question. I am agnostic and coming from the LDS (Mormon) faith. One of the tenets of that faith is that through faith and study we can one day become like god.

Mystery cults often will claim such things.

I will note that becoming like God and learning to conduct oneself behaviorally and morally like God are two entirely different things that shouldn't be confused. I'm not familiar with Latter-Day Saints beliefs, so I don't know which is taught therein, but the distinction is important.

  • posted a message on bitcoin, your thoughts, as well as other cryptocurrencies
You missed my point. The entities you mentioned - the Federal Reserve and the government - operate within a system called "realpolitik." The dictionary entry I quoted above is sanitized. A more accurate reading would be as follows:

A system of politics based on perceived situations and desires rather than on morals and dignity.

It's not about the money, it's about power, and there are a great many people who worship the former in order to obtain the latter. The libor rate manipulations, as well as other shenanigans, demonstrate that unfortunate reality. I get a feeling you underestimate the lengths some people will go to in order to preserve that paradigm. As you correctly point out, armies are paid for and supplied by monetized debt, which makes the government and Federal Reserve irrevocably interdependent. Neither can continue to exist in its current form without the other also doing so. It doesn't matter whether they're separated on paper, because in realpolitik paper holds no more value than promises, which hold none. If a crypto-currency is going to try and replace the dollar, an attempt will be made to eliminate it or subvert it. To fend off such an attack would therefore require an army, and unless you can build one with bitcoins, you're out of luck.

The most likely scenario, as I see it, is that bitcoin and other fully digital currencies will simply be assumed into the established financial system via swaps and derivatives.

My point wasn't that they can't or wouldn't work, but rather they won't be allowed to. I don't mean any of this in a paranoid delusional way. I don't believe MIB are going to break down my door and cart me off to some hole in a third world country. A sniper isn't going to shoot me with a pellet full of an untraceable poison. It's just the reality of the situation.

So really I wasn't trying to kill your hopes of a better world. Things will get better eventually, but if you expect it to happen quickly or easily you're going to be very sorely disappointed. Just temper your optimism with patience and realistic expectations.

Understand this though: when the current paradigm collapses, you and other like-minded individuals will need to present a better alternative, both functionally better and morally better, and the financial system is just one piece of that. Your accusation of "that currency you are loving so much" couldn't be more wrong or baseless. Both the dollar and bitcoin are nothing more than electrical impulses in a network of fiberglass, copper, and insulation. I have no love or hate for either; it's the actions using them I will do so. When the time comes all these decisions have to be made, unless the new proposition is better than the old, I and others like me will likely subscribe to the old saying, "The evil I know is better than that which I don't." I'd rather remain familiar with a bad situation and wait for a good one rather than jump into a different bad situation and endure all the chaos and destruction in between. You mentioned Russia in an earlier post. One only needs look at the former Soviet Union and present Russia to see why that's true.

Anybody else think it's crass and tasteless for the police and media to trumpet the grisly details of his passing? If his family wanted to talk about those things at some point as a possible way to dissuade others from going down the same path of ruin, that'd be one thing. But for random strangers, especially law enforcement individuals charged with protecting and serving, to shout to the world that the man died with a needle in his arm on the bathroom floor in his underwear surrounded by a hoard of narcotics is reprehensible. No one is just a worthless junkie. In his case, he was a son and a father. It'd be nice if government officials and national media journalists would exercise some ******* decency once in a while. Compounding tragedies helps no one.

    Quote from rxavage
There has been a ton of people ODing in the north east recently. I think it is due to cheap and powerful fentanyl analogues being readily available online to any scum bag drug dealer.

Fentanyl isn't even the worst. Not too long ago a veterinarian from ND extracted the active agent out of big game tranquilizers (like elephant big game), mixed it with powdered sugar, and sold it to a drug runner as heroin. Twelve people in my state overdosed before a medical examiner even figured out what it was. The LD is so low it wasn't detectable with standard tox screens. When they finally found the guy distributing it to dealers, 26 people are known to have ODed as a result. He didn't even know what was going on. After he told LE who his source was, he committed suicide. The vet pled out for 20 to life.

    And so it goes.
