I've seen the culture first hand. How about you explain how they aren't? You think everything is just given to them or that they made waves as a group with out contribution? That makes absolutely no sense.

Pretty much, lumped into a subculture which is okay. It's how define ourselves socially, you can embrace what subculture that has be pre-defined for you or shun it, I don't find a problem with that unless you aren't allowed to make the choice.

I meant like what did they do or do they do? I don't follow trends or anything really that is not the news. It's more like a general question out of curiosity, like asking someone what they do. Personally I don't really care either way as these are just people in the end. In the end they are the same as everyone else, seeking happiness and to relieve suffering.

It's their self expression that allows them to stand as a productive subculture (perhaps the most productive one as most hipsters are in their lately twenties and thirties) without having to bow to social pressure be it direct or indirect to get a job at a 9-5 office job (or something similar).

    Productive how? Please explain.

This is how hipsters are wrongly portrayed.

Living in Austin which is THE hotbed for hipsters outside of the pacific northwest I can personally attest that this is not the majority not even 95 percent of the people perceived to be "hipsters" a group name I assure you they don't like. They embrace the irony of that label you defined all while laughing that everyone thinks labels matter at all. It's kind of funny. I know people like the ones you described and those aren't hipsters, those are like a millenial indie subculture I was studying closely while I was in Austin.

To a very small extent I am a "hipster" within my post-grunge self. I worked in social media music marketing which led me to a key couple of people who had a good beat on finding music that is awesome. Sometimes they become big names on the radio or on the "indie" scene, sometimes it's for us easy going people and nothing more.

Every subculture has defining characteristics, these "hipsters" are no different, neither are the indie millennial, it's expression. The plaid, the tattoos, the mustaches for the hip. The v-necks, the tight pants, the converse for the millennial.

Hipsters chose to partake in more artisanal things be it their job or their taking pleasure in life's small joys (like above mentioned beer, beer is a big "hipster" thing) as well as being daring in self expression through body modification solidifying their confidence. It's their self expression that allows them to stand as a productive subculture (perhaps the most productive one as most hipsters are in their lately twenties and thirties) without having to bow to social pressure be it direct or indirect to get a job at a 9-5 office job (or something similar).

    So they're just people then.

I thought about this idea of language, etc., while on my drive home from work.

Jay, I have to amend my previous comment. I DO feel superior to some people. Why? Well, let's put it this way:

You say I shouldn't feel superior to others because of what I like and what I do. Well, the reality of my life (and my experiences; thus, my understanding as shown to me) is that those who dislike what I happen to like absolutely feel superior to me for it, and often, these people have zero problem providing me with friendly reminders that they believe this.

Whether it was various family members calling me a girl because I grew my hair out or not wanting to stand next to me in a wedding party for fear they would "catch" my "disease..." or my peers (then) physically and verbally abusing me and (now) assuming things about me that just aren't so because of a taste preference... Or the weird looks I get from people for the hair... Or, when I say I like heavy metal, people say, "How can you listen to that noise?"... Or, "Do we have to listen to THIS?" when they're a passenger in my car.

Yeah, they're not encouraging me to feel different from them, no. Should I feel inferior or superior to them? Personally, I feel much better being superior to them than inferior.

I generally say I hold humanity in a low regard; maybe this is biased towards Americans, but I find that people are more interested in dividing than uniting over silly things, and many have little to no trouble being incredibly harsh about it.

I'm not saying I should be venerated for my taste; I'm saying I shouldn't be denigrated for it - but that's what actually happens.

Perhaps, one day, people will stop being so divisive, and I will gladly get off any high horse I may be sitting on. But I have grown weary of being a "nice guy" about these things yet I still get **** on. My age has made me more of an "eye for an eye" kind of guy, for better or worse.

So I have some solidarity with the "hipsters," who are just people like you and me, just with a different aesthetic sense. They are still humans who need love and companionship, food and shelter, and thus are no different from anyone else where it actually matters.

You like what you like and that's ok. It's not better or worse, just different. Different is not bad.

The way I see it, as long as someone does not deride or hurt others with what they do it's fine by me.

I think you're getting me wrong here, I've tried to be pretty clear that I'm talking about snobby hipsters, not hipsters in general. If you don't like being labelled, that's an unfortunate by-product of how society works. You will never get a label-free society, because humans are conditioned to think in terms of a tribal mentality. It's unfortunate, but once you move past that and start to think about how labels and trends change, you can come up with solutions instead of resentment.

My bottom line is that there is nothing wrong with liking the norm, either. Different isn't inherently better, just like uniformity isn't bad. I'm just trying to get across to you my own experiences. You seem like a good guy, especially since you responded to my criticism with maturity, so take it from a guy that knows that the need to feel superior is a character flaw and you'll be a much stronger person if you can fight it and share your strengths with other people. Once I stopped feeling insecure and trying to boost my self esteem by feeling superior to others, I became a much stronger and more successful person. If you don't think this applies to you, that's fine, I just feel a lot of my high school/college self in your statements.

I have that same issue myself. I feel the need to be superior to other people even though I never used to be that way myself. I remember being curious and wishing to learn about the world and the people in it, I was far more open and caring then. But things change in time I suppose and it's something I need to work on.

As for myself, I'm a terribly practical person. I go for function and comfort in clothes, not a need to be different (although my tastes tend to stay within white, black and gray). As for my tastes and interests I have always liked what I liked and never really payed attention to trends and fads, just what I enjoy. I guess that could make me Sakashima in a way, never pegged into one spot but doing what I like (which takes me to different styles and tastes). I guess I'm just me, simple as that.

This actually did help me out quite a bit, thank you. I think I can take it from here.

Could someone clarify as to what exactly a "hipster" is? I hear the term used often and every time I ask about it I get quite a few conflicting answers.

I was never one for loyalty to the country. The older I got the harder it was for me to think of any country as more than a rock with a name tagged to it.

Mirage, you seem to be making a bit of a classic mistake. Regardless about the reality of the world, it's still ultimately your life. Do not confuse reality being an illusion with that meaning you shouldn't do anything with your life. The illusion is all you have. Just use the philosophy to keep your actions in perspective.

This makes absolutely no sense. In fact I think it's going to make things worse for me.

Well I was hoping for something better for Phenax but given what the other gods are like I'm not surprised. I could build a pretty neat EDH with him in it.

Also I'm sure Smelt is in standard, and one mana answer to your cute lantern hehe.

Mirage I would happily race your stormbreath with this guy. Oh yeah and can you bestow stormbreath onto your 3/3 to make him an absolute monster? No I don't think you can. Chromanticore is obviously a more powerful creature, the mana cost is just restrictive which can be worked around.

And sylphior don't worry, I had a dream to take first with a battle of wits deck in draft and I did it on the first try.

Use your head. If I'm running red do you think you'll have the chance to bestow or let alone ramp up to it? Not to mention with white I can splash glare to exile it and blue just needs a Gainsay to stop it (the bane of running all the colors). If you just normal cast it then mortars are all you need to stop it. Your threat is down then Stormbreath for game.

For five mana you could cast Stormbreath Dragon which is far better than this thing.

Terrible in standard only because Dark Betrayal, Glare of Heresy, and Gainsay exist. Sure you can ramp into it, but you would probably not have anything else to protect you and they can just stop it with one or two mana. Possible in EDH, even then I would run cheaper and better auras, but that's about it.
