It's a simple enough concept, you can't go back hours later after someone's been handed their winning and say I have a video of you with an extra card, but if you catch them in the act it should be an automatic loss.

If someone wins a tournament, and come to find out they had 6 of the same card in their deck instead of 4 they should be stripped of all those victories, and their winnings repossessed, or suspended from future events.

Things like triggered events, and failure to draw a card, can, and will happen, as I said it is up to the player, judges, and opponents to be aware of their surroundings, and if they catch something not right happening their shouldn't be any excuses as to why it is, or isn't being dealt with appropriately, and if they don't catch it, well that's life, it isn't always fair.

It seems like a lot of people are making excuses for this, "They are tired!" "It was a mistake"

It is a competitive match, for a prize, played by what a lot consider "professionals". I understand everyone makes mistakes, but their opponent shouldn't have to suffer for them, they should.

however, it is really on the opponent to know what is happening on both sides of the board, I'm sure there are very few instances that someone is running a good enough scam they make it through a whole tournament unnoticed, things that do get noticed turns later should be noted, but if they are caught in the act they should surely be penalized, and defiantly have action taken for repeat offenses.

We used to have a friend in our casual group that was notorious for drawing extra cards, sometimes he would sit an entire game with 8-9 cards in his hand. I personally called him on it a couple times, sometimes I didn't, but apparently it was such a common occurrence that it became an inside joke between the rest of us that the guy thought he was getting away with it.

He really thought hey if no one says anything, it must be okay. Some people are just deceptive by nature, but in a professional environment it should not be tolerated, and sometimes that means penalizing people for mistakes to protect the rest of the player from would be offenders.

  • posted a message on Does Anyone Miss the Premium Deck Series?
Actually the tribal themes were part of the duel decks, not the premium deck series (except slivers), so its still likely they can produce more, but their main focus is obviously cashing in on commander right now. I heard they actually have a copyright on Cube too, or at least did, so were probably planning on releasing a Cube series at some point.

Personally I wouldn't mind seeing a premium Myr deck, there weren't really any Myr in the Phyrexia vs. The Coalition duel decks. I was thinking the other day why didn't they ever explore the Gnome creature type more, as it turns out Myr were originally suppose to be gnomes, and are pretty much the Mirrodin equivalent which is pretty cool.

  • posted a message on Drugs are Cheaper than Magic the Gathering Cards!!!
It's not Magic, or drugs that are harmful, its the addiction, which comes any many forms, gambling being one, and it is hard to deny that opening a pack of magic is not of the same equivalent as using a scratch-it ticket, sometimes you profit, other times you break even, but more often then not your left with a worthless piece of cardboard.

You may not find any Juggalo's that are stockbrokers, but I'm sure you will find many stockbroker's addicted to something in one form or another.

Eh, most of the stuff mtglion comes up with is incoherent or bull. One moment he praises himself as the savior of the magic galaxy, the next he's worshiping some great unknown force.

If any Youtuber is worth watching its mtghq, just saying the guys got to hold at least a couple of records.

  • posted a message on Whyat to do when a store constantly "forgets" to give out promos.
Sounds to me like you got two options, pull the man behind the counter aside and mention it to him every week, maybe even the ones you missed, but be cool about it, and try to get in good with him (maybe he will toss you more than one)

    or

Make it more relevant with the other players, maybe loudly ask another player if they got their promo last week in front of the owner, or ask the owner about them out loudly in front of everyone on a regular basis, Until either he, or the players start to take notice that it's an issue.

I remember reading somewhere that LGS's are not obligated to give out promo's they are more less optional as a way to entice players. I'm sure if the store owner feels enough customers are not happy with not receiving them, they will stop forgetting.

this really makes me pose the question, is MtG a pay to win game?
    Main point alert!!
What is wrong with opening eternal formats to more of the player base?
I have been playing for 20 years and I would like to think that its more about skill, fun and comeraderie.... just my opinion tho.

I agree with opening up the format, the problem lays with the same reason there is a reserved list. To protect long time players, collectors, and investors. A way simply needs to be developed that would allow it to happen with out completely damaging the value of 20 year old cards.

I think the issue is with lands, its one thing to invest 200 in a playset of goyfs, or confidants because they are great splashable creatures that are still obtainable just by how recently they were released, Forces are another example, its a turn 0 counter spell so that makes perfect sense, but then you have decks running 20 non basic lands that cost 50 to 150 a piece, that's 1500 bucks just to have the fastest and most consistent mana base the game offers.

Even the land deck is more understandable it runs several rare lands that have been staples forever, difference is it only runs 1 or 2 of each, and its win condition is based off it.

I have suggestions but there is not going to be any easy way to do it without having a significant impact on the game and format. allowing land proxies, or producing more counter measures is one example, restricting dual lands? push them into vintage?

As I previously stated most people you run into at your local fnm are going to be in the same boat, there may be 1 or 2 elite, but you have to put the work or money to be one of them.

If you can only afford one or two staples a month that is fine, you play your local fnm's and learn your deck as it gets better with time, within a year when the next big tournament come to your city, you will have managed to acquire the cards and skill to actually compete in it.

Plus if your playing competitive legacy, at a top level, there are prizes, free swag, and sponsors so if your investment was a smart one to begin with you'll eventually see a return on it.

Instant gratification isn't cheap for most hobbies, your not going to drop $60 on craigslist for a cheap pair of used golf clubs, and join the pro circuit next year either.

Exactly my point, you could put the deck together in one quick investment, it would still be playable on a casual level, but itll probably take you 5-10 years of collecting and praying that it is either still a viable deck option, your even still interested in running it, or the cards haven't been banned or replaced.

The major problem isn't the inflation of staples its the necessity of imbalands, but the only option I see is either allowing lands to be proxied in sanctioned events, or reprinting wastelands, and stripmines in such an abundance that you can either choose to try and play those lands, or be one for oned by a cheaper alternative.

I was contemplating this more the other day, and decided to look up a few decks.

I managed to knock down the RUG Delver deck from $2500 to $60 just by taking out the goyfs, forces, and dual lands.

The result is whats seems would be just as enjoyable deck.

It does seem a little ridiculous that $1200+ in imbalands has otherwise put a stranglehold on a popular format.

I've been to FNM exactly 3 times, however. Why? Because the people there embarrass me and I don't want to be associated with them.

My post was going to be pretty much the same. I was fortunate enough at this age to have friends I could both play mtg and party with. The same table we played drinking games at (with girls) was the same one we gathered to play magic at when no one else was around. Though I was always polite, I always looked at the guys at our LGS and even the shop owners like they were nerds I couldn't ever associate with beyond passing.

Now a days I think I am little more mature, but more of a nerd than ever. I probably wouldn't mind joining a local FNM for a few games if there was anyone within my age group. My initial feeling when ever I think of LGS's now is that I will be the creepy old guy at the toy store.

    Edit:

Probably my worst experience with magic was leaving a LGS one day with a stack of cards Id just bought. I didn't have anywhere to conceal them, and was getting ready to ride the bus when some kid noticed them, and pointed out to his friend how "Gay" magic was. My initial thought was this punk was going to get his ass whooped trying to mess with the wrong nerd, until his friend told him to shut up, and he explained to me how he thought it was lame, because he was a LR5 player, I then thought OMG this creep was really going to start something over a card game. I'm glad I turned the other cheek, but something tells me that kid really needed a punch in the face that day.

Well truth is legacy isn't supposed to be meant for everyone your talking about 20 year old cards that wont be reprinted. People who play it either have the income to invest in it, or have collected since the beginning, you cant expect to be playing the game for 4 years, and be at the top of the pack.

Another thing to note is that a majority of players, especially those your going to meet at your local fnm are in the same boat as you, yeah there might be a shop owner or 1 or 2 guys who have been doing it for years, and always seem to win, but why shouldn't you have to put in the same kind of work to climb that ladder.

All those standard cards will eventually become modern, and legacy too, so it's an ever growing pool, and the amount of deck combinations are almost limitless, even what may seem the crappiest card ever could become a staple overnight, it just takes a high level player playing it effectively, and word catching on.

The only spells they should be ever playing on another persons turn are instants and cards with flash, so if it's either of those then yes they are clear, otherwise call em on it.

play casual, and stop net decking! nothing will be more gratifying than rolling over a $500 deck with a $30 one.
