Agreed, Karn has been unimpressive for me, certainly not worth a slot in the mainboard. It feels like a 4 mana Master of Etherium in many games, without the anthem effect
Thanks for the reply, but this is not in reference to dealing with stony silence, it is to keep a high threat density when you know you will be sideboarding out Steel Overseers etc and to have creatures that ignore Stony Silence. The idea being that I want the deck to be as proactive and threat dense as possible.
I am in the camp of ignoring Stony Silence - plenty of wins through a SS without an answer & lost plenty of games with a spell pierce i couldn't cast or drawing irrelevant sideboard cards like thoughtseize late game. I will still have Aethergrids anyway as it is fantastic.
Hazoret seems to be gaining popularity (was even 1 mb at scgbalt team event).
My question is how does Lupine Prototype compare in this slot?
2cmc v 4cmc
Colourless v coloured
No activated ability v activated ability
Relevant card type v irrelevant card type
Weak to normal removal v resistant to normal removal
No haste v haste
Had some practice games against a mate with Lantern - overseers are good, you just dont want to activate them unless it gives you lethal. Master of etherium and etched champion come out
I'm moving hours away for an internship over the summer, so I figured I'd get back to Magic to meet some new people.
I've wanted to buy into Affinity for years (since I started during Mirrodin, really), could someone please recommend some good primers or something?
Also, what kind of sideboard cards should I plan on getting? I don't know the meta I'm going to, but I guess I'd like to have a solid base against Burn, Shadow, Eldrazi, and Tron. Thanks!
Check out Frank Karstens articles - theyre pretty on the money
I'm planning on playing Titanshift in a team unified modern GP this year, and was wondering if anyone had any sidebord ideas for team. Given the fact that I may not have access to my ideal sideboard list. My teammates are playing Bant Eldrazi and Elves at the moment, although that may change over the course of the next few months.
With Bant Eldrazi being on my team, straight away I don't have access to Grafdigger's cage, EE, or spellskite. Cage can be replaced with a Tormod's Crypt or Relic of Progenitus, so that shouldn't be a problem. Thankfully I still have access to Chalice. I was thinking that cards like Beast within might come in handy to deal with the things that EE normally takes care of for you.
If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be more than happy to read them.
Thanks!
Three green decks is not where i would like to start for a team unified GP... not really constructive criticism, but someone should consider playing a non green deck
Ended doing 2-2 on my FNM tonight. Won 2-0 against Burn and Grixis Shadow (on G2, I mulled into a 2 lands, Opal, Champion, RIP and Moon, just brutal), lost 1-2 against Jeskai Copycat and Dredge.
Without going in details, again, I just don't like Blast anymore. I think Dickmann is right when he says it's not great in this meta, I was thinking about doing something like 3 Cast and 1 Jar, or 4 Cast.
Also, Rest in Peace is beast, definitely took the Relic spot in my sideboard.
Do you board out all of the Ravagers or just some?
Has anyone been sideboarding bloodmoons vs a lot of the greedy manabases for the current modern meta? I feel like it'd just completely hose so many decks that you can just ignore them, continue with beat downs and laugh as they struggle to cast their hand. For example with Jund, hand disruption is usually boarded out vs affinity (not so much on the play I assume) and Jund has a lot of interaction by default with abrupt/ancient grudge/kologhans/fatal push for postboard. But if we bloodmoon, we can laugh as abrupt decay is their only save forcing them to sit back with an open black and green mana source to abrupt after floating when it resolves. I'd imagine it'd stress their hand so much that the game can quickly become unrecoverable.
Apologies for any running on thoughts that are a bit incoherent. Jund has been a chore lately to face off with but this hypothetical scenario just makes bloodmoon look so good currently (even vs many other decks too).
I love my bloodmoon out of the sideboard - has won me a lot of otherwise tough matchups - been great against Melira co, bant eldrazi, abzan/junk and Ad Nauseum in particular. They dont expect it & therefore not fetching for basics.
I don't agree, can't do anything about that. I almost always draw one of the four colored lands and Wear // Tear can also be played in response to it like it could do spell Pierce, floating for white.
Anyway... is Sea Gate Wreckage a good SB option, or is it just a decent card?
I love SGW - Grindy match ups like the mirror, jund, abzan etc you are drawing 2 cards a turn - which you absolutely need to compwte with their own card quality/draw
I don't like Wear // Tear against Stony Silence exactly due to the reason that it's very hard to get mana to play it under Stony Silence. You need color man source and Mox Opal and Springleaf Drum don't do anything with it in the play so you basically need Glimmervoid to get rid of it and it's not super likely that you'll draw it. I've had lots of games with Stony Silence on the opposing side and no Glimmervoid so Wear // Tear wouldn't do anything if I had it. As I wrote I hope they don't have it, if they do they do but i wouldn't fill my sb slot for a card that can deal with hate card (although a very good hate card) if it's very possible that I won't be able to cast it at all with that hate card in play.
100% agree. Either get it before it lands with Thoughtseize/Spell Pierce or plan to play through a Stony Silence like it was guaranteed to happen on turn 2
Thanks for the responses! It's super helpful. 2 more
Thoughts on blossoming defense?
Blood moon, is it worth messing up our manlands?
Bloodmoon has been fantastic for me. Most opponents dont expect it and it csn really blow out your opponent while we can still usually play everything in our deck
Has anyone played with mono U? I am building a standard deck after having not played since Shadows over Innistrad was released. I have an opportunity to play next week, so wanted to build a deck on a budget. I tested it out on wednesday at my flgs and my only loss was to a mate wgo was on BG Snek (that he used to top 4 the rptq the weekend before)
He said that there is nothing like it in the meta, so he had no sideboard cards that he wanted to bring in.
Here is my list;
// Deck: Standard (60)
// Lands
10 Island
4 Nephalia Academy
1 Ruins of Oran-Rief
3 Sea Gate Wreckage
4 Warped Landscape
2 Wastes
Ruination Guide has over performed - T2 Mimic, turn 3 Ruination Guide swing for 4. Turn 4 Ruination Guide swing for 9. They also make skyspawner a clock if the ground gets locked up

Could Lupine Prototype also work in this spot?
Is the matchup really as bad as my w/l%? I gave played it 3 times and been pummelled three times.
I feel like the match shouldnt be as bad as it feels - is it just a case of having the turn 2 kill before they can get a Bridge online?
