The End of an Era

Ronnie328, I wanted to get back into playing and eventually back into competitive. I think I'm going to start off on the UG build Mace Posted earlier because before Temur I was a Simic guy. lol Some ways down the road I do intend to make my own brew, this energy mechanic is interesting, and I'm pretty sure it's already been exploited to the max but I can't wait to see which way actually works best.

I'm most definitely am gonna try out the UG Energy build first. Looking at all 3 builds and even seeing it in that Pro Tour I can for certain Bristling Hydra is a must have for anything competitive and green. I really like what I'm seeing here, especially Rootbound Crag being back in standard. Thank you Mace! These are ideal for getting used to the energy mechanic on the way back in!

After taking a bit of a break I've been itching to start playing Magic again. The latest in any tournament coverage I've caught up to has been Pro Tour Ixalan. I figured this would be the best place to ask for some info and insight on having a good reboot so I'm not just jumping back in blindfolded.

My current plan is to start drafting and collecting up to date (current Standard) cards to have a deck again. I haven't played competitive or at all for that matter since...I want to say SOI (Shadows Over Innistrad)? But I do have some cards (of which I'm sure are out by now) left from a aggro U/W Spirit deck I played briefly before going on hiatus.

I'm a blue mage, but I loved Temur when Khans Block was still legal, so I guess what I want to ask while I draft is what are decent budget decks in U/G/R or any combination of those colors to start on while I collect for a Temur with a dab of B build? Eventually when I finish thinking about the last few cards on that list I'll post that up for opinions as well.

I've been testing this for a different take on a aggressive deck that can keep a hand when played right:

    4x Thraben Inspector
    3x Town Gossipmonger
    3x Topplegeist
    4x Daring Sleuth
    3x Erdwal Illuminator
    4x Pious Evangel
    2x Always Watching
    4x Expose Evil
    2x Catalog
    2x Survive The Night
    2x Tamiyo's Journal
    2x Evolving Wilds
    10x Plains
    11x Island

The idea is to work with the "Investigate" mechanic while putting a decent board into action so that you can always spend your mana doing something produtive. Progress the board, setup for combat tricks, and when you have the spare mana after a couple of plays? Investigate to replenish your hand, or save up the clues for the Tamiyo's Journal Tutor effect. Thraben Inspector is the healthy early game 1 drop that gets the Investigate party started, while the Town Gossipmonger helps you keep in mind that this is a aggro deck after all. Topplegeist (As it hits field and if Delirium is fulfilled) along with Expose Evil helps tap down key blockers out the way while either putting a 1/1 flyer into the field or investigates for a clue. Daring Sleuth flips into a more lethal body as soon as you sacrifice a clue token and then anytime after that it investigates everytime it does damage. Erdwal Illuminator's 1/3 body is good for early game blocks and helps out that its a flyer, but the real help comes in for everytime you investigate for the first time each turn it investigates once more for you. Starting off with an extra clue token off your first investigate each turn can get pretty cool early game for when you set or the Journal plays or when you need to stockpile to build your hand up. Pious Evangel is just a tech choice considering you'll be playing a lot of creatures. Gain life to help you last the longer games, and then when it flips, help end the game quicker. Always watching was a great card in a U/W Spirits deck I recently built for cheap too, so I figured I'd give it a try with this build and turns out I like it here too. The +1/+1 and vigilance for a wide board is so good especially when you're trying to close out a game. Catalog is my choice when you start drawing duds and need a card to dig a bit deeper that also coincidentally helps out for delirium on the occasion, and survive the night is another combat trick that often gets other higher end targets off the board when you work the timing right.

Any Questions, thoughts, concerns, advice? Any and all would be greatly appreciated.

This thread looked like it was getting interesting and possibly going somewhere profitable. I have a random idea. The premise of the deck in mind is control right? Why not include some Nightveil Specter's? I understand the reasoning, and maybe it's my locals that I'm basing this off, but I'm not exactly too keen on the Bane Alley Broker. I started testing out a different iteration of Prophetic B/U/G control, and I feel that Specter and Horizon Chimera would be amazing, Chimera mainly for the idea of helping to mitigate the loss of life from the shock lands, and read the bones. In fact... Does any think that it might even be possible to fit in a Underworld Connections?.. Just curious.

Hello, I'm new to this site and kinda still a bit green to this game but I've found a little home with Simic builds. I was just curious about a couple of things. I was wondering why not tilt a bit more into U devotion, (I'll explain) why not utilize a creature such as Horizon Chimera, and why not incorporate a second Thassa, God of the sea just because of chain to the rocks. I could post my build if that would be ok. The devotion idea came from Master of Waves being a thing, which can also turn out to be another win condition instead of relying so heavily on the tricks and tactics of playing MTG on your opponents turn as well. lol Also I feel Simic Charm is a great card to at least try out. With all of the creature removal that could easily deal with Prophet of kruphix ( doom blade , lightning strike and so on and so on) wouldn't you feel a lot more confident to be able to give it hex proof to protect it. Or in situations where you would have to sacrifice a creature to be able to bounce/return it back to your hand out of danger? Thoughtseize is still a thing but that's another story for another day. As for my Horizon Chimera mention, I just personally found it really good to gain a life whenever you draw a card. Pair that with Bident of Thassa and you have not only more of a potential field manipulation but also a bigger potential for life gain. And seeing as U was a bit more prevailing in my build, I decided a second Thassa was kinda needed. Not just because it's a 5/5 for 3, can make things unblockable, or let's you scry before your upkeep everytime. 2 because Chained to the rocks is a very real thing. I figured if you're going to run Prognostic Sphinx for the scry, why get a bit more out of it for the 2 count towards devotion? Just some of my ideas and these are very different but I definitely can understand the approach here in these list. Anyways I just started playing September of this year so I'm still kind of a no-nothing lol I just wanted some thoughts and criticism.
