Apr 21, 2015kamakazi339 posted a message on The Shambling HordeI originally built this deck with rooftop storm in mind then I realized most of my spells cost less than the storm its self. Honestly after 1 is on the field then I would just be dead drawing. I might sideboard it. Im glad you like my decks! Feel free to gimme any tips you think of =)Posted in: Kama's Deck Selection

And with eternity it is essentially the same casting cost as scarab
I was wondering about how to get around the second game hate for Approach in game 2 but it really occurred to me..... "What if they don't know about approach UNTIL game 2?"
So I came up with this ideal. The game plan game 1 is to us a mixture of Azor's Gateway and Walking Ballista along with a generalized U/W shell to attempt a game 1 win. With enough counters and overall removal alongside the life gain returns from Fumigate a flipped Gateway can easily give a 15+ mana return in the late game. So, once flipped I go into dropping massive ballistas with negate protection against countermagic. If they then attempt to kill a ballista, I just smack them in the mouth with it. This approach works well against decks with not a lot of life gain (which people seem to not be running these days).
Game 2 my opponent will most likely side in enchantment hate and will even leave in creature removal to attempt to kill my ballistas. The problem with that type of boarding is I will instantly drop x3 Gateway and x4 Ballista in order to swap IN 4x opt and 3x Approach. This has really set my opponents off balance. As they have been thinking about how to kill my azor's/ballista combination I cast approach and essentially laugh.
I realize transitional sideboards aren't anything new but I'd love to hear opinions about this ideal. It seems to work well in my testing and using Azor's gateway is a blast.
Here's my list:
4x Walking Ballista
Sorceries (4)
4x Fumigate
Instants (16)
3x Disallow
2x Farm // Market
3x Glimmer of Genius
3x Negate
1x Settle the Wreckage
4x Supreme Will
Artifacts (3)
3x Azor's Gateway
Enchantments (7)
4x Aether Meltdown
3x Cast Out
4x Glacial Fortress
4x Ipnu Rivulet
2x Irrigated Farmland
8x Island
8x Plains
Creatures (3)
2x Regal Caracal
1x Glyph Keeper
Sorceries (3)
3x Approach of the Second Sun
Instants (6)
3x Essence Scatter
3x Opt
3x Authority of the Consuls
I can stay up enough to get to turn 6 against aggro and once you start popping out 5/5s at the rapid rate that game is over.
Honestly, I should probably drop it down to a one of as that is all I ever sideboard in. The sideboard is still in a bit of a flux at the moment. I'm not sure what all to include.
Here's what I'm running.
1x Carnage Tyrant
3x Gifted Aetherborn
4x Merfolk Branchwalker
1x Noxious Gearhulk
4x Ravenous Chupacabra
1x Razaketh, the Foulblooded
3x Seekers' Squire
2x Tendershoot Dryad
3x Thrashing Brontodon
4x Yahenni, Undying Partisan
Instants (5)
4x Fatal Push
1x Vraska's Contempt
1x Liliana, Death's Majesty
1x Vraska, Relic Seeker
Enchantments (3)
3x Journey to Eternity
Land (24)
4x Blooming Marsh
2x Field of Ruin
6x Forest
2x Foul Orchard
10x Swamp
Creatures (5)
2x Polyraptor
3x Prowling Serpopard
Sorceries (4)
2x Lost Legacy
1x Bontu's Last Reckoning
1x Yahenni's Expertise
3x Plummet
2x Vraska's Contempt
Went for 4 rounds and I got the 1st round buy.
First actual game I played against a B/W Vamps deck running Legion Lieutenant, Adanto Vanguard, and Paladin of Atonement.
Went 2-1 here with two of the games being very close and the other game I was mana screwed at 4 until I died.
Comments here:
1. The deck struggles a bit when they go wide with things such as call to the feast and buffing all of those tokens with Radiant Destiny. This is a bit specific but it was a chore to get ahead of that wide of the board. Glad I put Yahenni's Expertise in and have since added the Bontu's Last Reckoning.
2. Obviously fatal push is amazing here so keep the 4 of.
The second game I went against was a B/U/G energy list using Bristling Hydra, Hadana's Climb and key removal. I went 0-2 here. Couldn't get past the damn hydras because I couldn't target them and they kept removing all of my Gifted Aetherborns. Literally just got trounced repeatedly. Yet another reason to add Bontu's Last Reckoning.
Comments here:
1. Hydras kill all. Run Bontu's Last Reckoning (unless we get another pure sweeper in color). It will save your life.
The third game I played was against U/B control. This deck destroyed U/B control. I went 2-1 here, only losing the first game because my opponent had 4 Essence Scatter and 2 Torrential Gearhulk in the first 6-7 turns. It literally had me tilted as hell. Couldn't get on board and when my opponent hit his second Gearhulk I just scooped.
Post Board this deck destroyed without my opponent hitting the nut draw and adding in 2x Lost legacy, (I played both targeting The Scarab God and Essence Scatter) 3x Prowling Serpopard, and 2x Vraska's Contempt. My opponent had no response to my ability to drop creatures and once I hit both of my Dryads it was a route.
Comments Here:
1. You shouldn't worry about control, at least with my setup. I know we're gonna lose Serpopard after rotation but until then it makes this game a breeze.
2. Maybe finding room for 2 Blossoming Defense might be an ideal? Im not really sure its worth it.
Overall, this deck was a blast. I would say Tendershoot Dryad is a MUST in this deck. Yes it is expensive and easily removed but with all of our recursion it is completely worth it especially after you hit ascend. Getting a 3/3 every upkeep is nasty especially against control and it stemmed the tide against go wide strategies. I realized that 4x Journey to Eternity was too many so I moved 1x Vraska's Contempt from the side to the main and I'll be figuring what else to add to the board later. Other than the one mana screw I never had problems keeping good mana flow or curving. I might also go down 1x Yahenni, Undying Partisan as cutting 1 from the main was always the move when boarding. Not sure what I'll go with instead.
Any questions feel free to ask.
I've been thinking about this as a whole and im really coming to the conclusion that maybe storm the vault is not going to be efficient in doing what i want.
Do you think going control with Azor's Gateway would work?
