I think it's funny. He probably thought he wouldn't really get to use it on much else, as it can be a narrow card. (In my playgroup, anyway.) I would've done it. You're a little too sensitive. Maybe you could have grovelled and asked for a pity spell resolution.
While this may not make the cut, one card I find incredibly helpful in my EDH is Rakka Mar. Army-in-A-Can is really helpful, and pooping out 2 lightning bolts on legs per turn via abusing Aurelias untap is sweet.
I honestly got the Grixis deck on release day because I just wanted Nekusar. (I had built an entire EDH deck around him as soon as he was leaked.) When I looked at the value of TNN later and saw it was worth ~50$ I nearly spat out my food! The card's not even very good (in the sense that I only play multiplayer EDH) and I somehow haven't managed to trade it off for something more worthwhile yet. How I still desire a snapcaster...

-5 Bonkers with Evolve. (remember simic? yeah. those are her colors.)
Her +1 absolutely dumps on Purphoros and shuts down their biggest fatty. Honestly, I think she is playable. She has an effect on the board against both aggro and control, either slowing opponents down or speeding you up. Me gusta.
Hey there buddy. You sound like a Vorthos Johnny, just like me. I have trouble also. Here's what you might find useful: I start writing a decklist for each Commander that I like. For example, Karador Kamigawa Spirit Tribal. If I can reach a decklist of ~100 cards, I decide to build the list. I also found building a Goblin Tribal Krenko EDH with flavorful spells like Goblin Grenade, even if they're subpar. You can even playtest decklists you write up online with tools like TappedOut before you buy.
ill-gotten gains both dumps their hands allowing for possible cloning and also lets you know what they have in their hands (and potentially recur something important for yourself)
While Progenitus is a decent beater, it's really slow... 3 turn clock without any boosting, that'll be painful in multiplayer if it becomes archenemy. (which i've noticed happens when you board wipe a lot.) I highly recommend Sorin, Lord of Innistrad because his emblem alone turns Brogenitus into a 2 turn clock. I know he gives a dumb little lifelinker but still slightly better than your Elspeth tokens.
Honestly anything from the FTV: Realms box is useful. I really like Desert; I've actually gotten multiple kills and deterred many random swings at me with it.

Sedris the Traitor King

Good luck!!
Also, the reason he should have a P/T of 2/3 is because he is a Wizard, after all. Wizards are notorious for having smaller power than toughness.
