    Quote from clavio »
If I have Teferi's Realm, does my opponent get a chance to respond when I pick a mode,

    There is no mode here.
700.2. A spell or ability is modal if it has two or more options in a bulleted list preceded by “Choose
one —,” “Choose two —,” “Choose one or both —,” “Choose one or more —,” “[A specified
player] chooses one —,” or similar. Each of those options is a mode.

    Quote from clavio »
or does that get picked when it resolves?

It's not a decision made as the ability is put on the stack, therefore it is made during resolution. Players would not get a chance to respond between that decision and the phasing out.
608.2d If an effect of a spell or ability offers any choices other than choices already made as part of
casting the spell, activating the ability, or otherwise putting the spell or ability on the stack, the
player announces these while applying the effect
. The player can’t choose an option that’s
illegal or impossible, with the exception that having a library with no cards in it doesn’t make
drawing a card an impossible action (see rule 120.3). If an effect divides or distributes
something, such as damage or counters, as a player chooses among any number of untargeted
players and/or objects, the player chooses the amount and division such that at least one player
or object is chosen if able, and each chosen player or object receives at least one of whatever is
being divided. (Note that if an effect divides or distributes something, such as damage or
counters, as a player chooses among some number of target objects and/or players, the amount
and division were determined as the spell or ability was put onto the stack rather than at this
    time; see rule 601.2d.)

    Quote from clavio »
Also if I have a way to make infinite mana (specifically high tide x2 + candelabra of tawnos + capsize + sufficient number of Island), how would I shortcut this in a serious tournament? What would I specifically have to say?
You would have to describe your intentions with enough detail to be understood, and the opponent would have a chance to respond.
    716. Taking Shortcuts
716.1. When playing a game, players typically make use of mutually understood shortcuts rather than
explicitly identifying each game choice (either taking an action or passing priority) a player makes.
716.1a The rules for taking shortcuts are largely unformalized. As long as each player in the game
understands the intent of each other player, any shortcut system they use is acceptable.
716.1b Occasionally the game gets into a state in which a set of actions could be repeated
indefinitely (thus creating a “loop”). In that case, the shortcut rules can be used to determine
how many times those actions are repeated without having to actually perform them, and how
    the loop is broken.
716.2. Taking a shortcut follows the following procedure.
716.2a At any point in the game, the player with priority may suggest a shortcut by describing a
sequence of game choices, for all players, that may be legally taken based on the current game
state and the predictable results of the sequence of choices. This sequence may be a nonrepetitive
series of choices, a loop that repeats a specified number of times, multiple loops, or
nested loops, and may even cross multiple turns. It can’t include conditional actions, where the
outcome of a game event determines the next action a player takes. The ending point of this
sequence must be a place where a player has priority, though it need not be the player proposing
    the shortcut.
Example: A player controls a creature enchanted by Presence of Gond, which grants
the creature the ability “{T}: Put a 1/1 green Elf Warrior creature token onto the
battlefield,” and another player controls Intruder Alarm, which reads, in part,
“Whenever a creature enters the battlefield, untap all creatures.” When the player has
priority, he may suggest “I’ll create a million tokens,” indicating the sequence of
activating the creature’s ability, all players passing priority, letting the creature’s ability
resolve and put a token onto the battlefield (which causes Intruder Alarm’s ability to
trigger), Intruder Alarm’s controller putting that triggered ability on the stack, all
players passing priority, Intruder Alarm’s triggered ability resolving, all players passing
priority until the player proposing the shortcut has priority, and repeating that sequence
999,999 more times, ending just after the last token-creating ability resolves.

seems pretty good to hijack their starfield of nyx itself. especially if you have any/a bunch of enchantments in your deck/graveyard.

Note that this would require using something other than Dragonlord Silumgar or some way to animate Starfield of Nyx.

Say my opponent has a Starfield of Nyx with five or more non-aura enchantments in play making his/her enchantments creatures.

Note that Auras count toward that five, they just don't get animated.
    Quote from Ponger »
I cast a Dragonlord Silumgar stealing one of those enchantments. When the enchantment comes to my side it stops being a creature. At that point does the enchantment return to my opponent or do I retain possession of the stolen enchantment?
You retain it; the duration is "for as long as you control Dragonlord Silumgar", not "for as long as that remains a creature or planeswalker".
611.2a A continuous effect generated by the resolution of a spell or ability lasts as long as stated by
the spell or ability creating it (such as “until end of turn”). If no duration is stated, it lasts until
    the end of the game.

611.2c If a continuous effect generated by the resolution of a spell or ability modifies the
characteristics or changes the controller of any objects, the set of objects it affects is determined
when that continuous effect begins. After that point, the set won’t change. (Note that this works
differently than a continuous effect from a static ability.) A continuous effect generated by the
resolution of a spell or ability that doesn’t modify the characteristics or change the controller of
any objects modifies the rules of the game, so it can affect objects that weren’t affected when
that continuous effect began. If a single continuous effect has parts that modify the
characteristics or changes the controller of any objects and other parts that don’t, the set of
objects each part applies to is determined independently.
Example: An effect that reads “All white creatures get +1/+1 until end of turn” gives
the bonus to all permanents that are white creatures when the spell or ability resolves—
even if they change color later—and doesn’t affect those that enter the battlefield or turn
    white afterward.

i just want to make sure why Cranial Platings is not legel target:(which one is correct?)
    1.because i don't control Cranial Plating.
2.Cranial Platings'description:can only equip own's creature , meantime i have Spellskite , and Spellskite is not controled by opp , so i can't change target.

I'm not sure what your confusion is. Cranial Plating's ability is absolutely a legal target of Spellskite's ability; is anyone telling you otherwise? That ability is just a pointless target, because nothing will happen when Spellskite's ability resolves.
114.6a If an effect allows a player to “change the target(s)” of a spell or ability, each target can be
changed only to another legal target. If a target can’t be changed to another legal target, the
original target is unchanged, even if the original target is itself illegal by then. If all the targets
aren’t changed to other legal targets, none of them are changed.

If layers aren't "times", then why is the God subtype removed in the middle of the layer system being evaluated in the first place?
Because the type "creature" is removed. There is no such thing as a noncreature nontribal God.

613.1. The values of an object’s characteristics are determined by starting with the actual object. For a
card, that means the values of the characteristics printed on that card. For a token or a copy of a
spell or card, that means the values of the characteristics defined by the effect that created it. Then
all applicable continuous effects are applied in a series of layers in the following order:

    A) Actual object:
    Supertype(s) Legendary
    Type(s) Enchantment, Creature
    Subtype(s) God

    B) A w/ "As long as your devotion to white and black is less than seven, Athreos isn't a creature.":
    Supertype(s) Legendary
    Type(s) Enchantment
    Subtype(s) none
B's types include neither creature nor tribal, therefore B's subtypes can't include any creature types.

    C) B w/ "As long as you control five or more enchantments, each other non-Aura enchantment you control is a creature in addition to its other types and has base power and base toughness each equal to its converted mana cost.":
    Supertype(s) Legendary
    Type(s) Enchantment, Creature
    Subtype(s) none

Why would you expect God or any other subtype to be added in the transition from B to C?

    Scenario:

I have a Relic of Progenitus on the battlefield with one mana available and my opponent casts Thought Scour targeting themselves. I notice that upon resolution of the Thought Scour, my opponent will have enough cards in the graveyard to successfully cast Tasigur, the Golden Fang using Delve if they have it. Once I allow Thought Scour to resolve, will I have an opportunity to activate Relic's second ability and exile all graveyards before they have a chance to utilize the graveyard and cast a potential Tasigur?
Not if it's a main phase of their turn and they cast Thought Scour on an empty stack. After Thought Scour (or almost anything else) resolves on their turn, they get priority.

    Layers are not time.

If an effect removes a type from time A to time B, the corresponding subtypes are also removed from time A to time B as part of that effect. But if a type is removed in layer 1 by a copy effect and re-added in layer 4 by some static abiilty, rule 205.1a doesn't add back any subtypes that were removed in layer 1. The same applies if the type is both removed and added in layer 4.

But, I'm assuming if you have something like banishing light with the transformation from starfield of nyx and you attack as a 3/3 and you die, you would lose the banishing light?

If you control Banishing Light, Starfield of Nyx, and at least three other enchantments, all your non-Aura enchantments other than Starfield of Nyx are creatures, with power and toughness as defined on that card.
    This includes Banishing Light.
If a creature suffers lethal damage (perhaps while attacking), it is destroyed. There are exceptions, but you haven't described anything here which would make Banishing Light an exception.
If Banishing Light is destroyed, it is put into the graveyard.
If it's in the graveyard, it's not on the battlefield.

  • posted a message on Liliana, Heretical Healer, Athreos, God of Passage, and removal..
    Quote from Gramps »
So really confused here. I had a Liliana, Heretical Healer in play, along with an animated (was a creature) Athreos, God of Passage. My opponent used Languish wiping my board. He chose to return Liliana, Heretical Healer to my hand paying the three life. She didn't flip.

So my question is this, was this just a simple stacking of triggers incorrectly issue, or is there something I'm missing here that allows a creature in exile to be returned to my hand before/instead of flipping into its other form.

    Thanks!
I think there are a couple things you missed here.
117.12a Some spells, activated abilities, and triggered abilities read, “[Do something] unless [a player does something else].” This means the same thing as “[A player may do something else]. If [that player doesn’t], [do something].”

400.7. An object that moves from one zone to another becomes a new object with no memory of, or relation to, its previous existence. There are seven exceptions to this rule:
400.7a Effects from spells, activated abilities, and triggered abilities that change the characteristics of a permanent spell on the stack continue to apply to the permanent that spell becomes.
400.7b Prevention effects that apply to damage from a permanent spell on the stack continue to apply to damage from the permanent that spell becomes.
400.7c If an ability of a permanent requires information about choices made as that permanent was cast as a spell, including what mana was spent to cast that spell, it uses information about the spell that became that permanent as it resolved.
400.7d Abilities that trigger when an object moves from one zone to another (for example, “When Rancor is put into a graveyard from the battlefield”) can find the new object that it became in the zone it moved to when the ability triggered, if that zone is a public zone.
400.7e Abilities of Auras that trigger when the enchanted permanent leaves the battlefield can find the new object that Aura became in its owner’s graveyard if it was put into that graveyard at the same time the enchanted permanent left the battlefield. It can also find the new object that Aura became in its owner’s graveyard as a result of being put there as a state-based action for not being attached to a permanent. (See rule 704.5n.)
400.7f If an effect grants a nonland card an ability that allows it to be cast, that ability will continue to apply to the new object that card became after it moved to the stack as a result of being cast this way.
400.7g A resolving spell or activated ability can perform actions on an object that moved from one zone to another while that spell was being cast or that ability was being activated, if that object moved to a public zone.

So, I believe this is the sequence you described:
    1. Opponent's main phase begins.
    2. Opponent gets priority and casts Languish. Opponent pays the cost of 2BB using mana obtained in an unspecified way.
    3. Opponent gets priority and passes.
    4. You get priority and pass.
    5. The top object on the stack (the spell cast in step 2) resolves. All creatures (including Liliana and Athreos) get -4/-4 until end of turn.
    6. Opponent would get priority, but there are state-based actions to perform. Liliana's power/toughness is -2/-1 and Athreos's is 1/0, so both are put in your graveyard. Their deaths trigger each other's abilities.
    7. Opponent would get priority, but there are triggered abiilties to put on the stack. You control both, so you get to choose the order, not that it matters in this case. I'll start with Athreos's for this example. A) You put "Whenever another creature you own [Liliana] dies, return it to your hand unless target opponent pays 3 life." on the stack, choosing your opponent as the target. B) You put "Whenever another nontoken creature you control [Athreos] dies, exile Liliana, Heretical Healer, then return her to the battlefield transformed under her owner's control. If you do, put a 2/2 black Zombie creature token onto the battlefield." on the the stack.
    8. Opponent gets priority and passes.
    9. You get priority and pass.
    10. The top object on the stack (the ability put there in step 7B) resolves. The Liliana referenced in the ability ceased to exist in step 6 (see rule 400.7), so nothing happens.
    11. Opponent gets priority and passes.
    12. You get priority and pass.
    13. The top object on the stack (the ability put there in step 7A) resolves. Opponent declines to pay 3 life (see rule 117.12a), so Liliana is returned to your hand from your graveyard.
    14. Opponent gets priority and ....

So the question is, can that player choose to "not" change the target with Misdirection, or does that player have to change the target to the only valid target, which is himself ?

Misdirection doesn't say "You may change the target ...." If Misdirection is still targeting the Lavalanche when it resolves and there is another valid target, the target of Lavalanche must be changed.

On a different note, am I right in thinking that the layer system could be though of as a series of steps? The first step is applied, and then the second, and so on.

The important thing is never to think of it as a sequence in time. If a Runeclaw Bear has a Holy Strength on it, and then Jump is cast on it, the appearance between layers 6 and 7 is "a 2/2 creature with flying", but there is no time at which it actually is a 2/2 creature with flying. I sometimes use "first/second/third/... approximation".

So, if I have my Thousand-year Elixir out I can tap/untap the first zombie 12 times? Or do they come out simultaneously, and untap every other creature on the board 13 times?

"other"? Intruder Alarm says "untap all creatures". All 13 Zombies enter the battlefield during the resolution of Army of the Damned, all 13 triggers are put on the stack right after the resolution finishes, and those triggers resolve one at a time.

    Quote from Tybonicus »
I had tried to play the one with the Undead Alchemist that way, but my opponent argued that the stack would have to completely resolve before I could retap the Wall of Air.
I see no reason the stack would need to be empty; that ability has no "Activate this ability only any time you could cast a sorcery." restriction.

    Ok Thanks!

Let's say I have a Rift Bolt suspend being resolved on my upkeep while at the same time I have to pay the cost of Pact of Negation on the same upkeep. If my opponent was at 1 life, and I don't have enough mana to pay for the Pact's cost, would I win the game if I chose to resolve the Rift Bolt first by putting Pact on the stack first and the Rift Bolt on top of it?

Yes. Is some part of the following sequence in question?
    1. Your upkeep step begins. This triggers the ability of Rift Bolt and the delayed trigger of Pact of Negation.
    2. You would get priority, but there are triggered abilities to put on the stack. A) You put "At the beginning of your next upkeep, pay 3UU. If you don't, you lose the game." on the stack. B) You put "At the beginning of your upkeep, if [Rift Bolt] is suspended, remove a time counter from it." on the stack.
    3. You get priority and pass.
    4. Opponent gets priority and passes.
    5. The top object on the stack (the ability put there in step 2B) resolves. You remove the only time counter from Rift Bolt. This triggers its ability.
    6. You would get priority, but there is a triggered ability to put on the stack. You put "When the last time counter is removed from [Rift Bolt], if it's exiled, play it without paying its mana cost if able. If you can't, it remains exiled. If you cast a creature spell this way, it gains haste until you lose control of the spell or the permanent it becomes." on the stack.
    7. You get priority and pass.
    8. Opponent gets priority and passes.
    9. The top object on the stack (the ability put there in step 6) resolves. You cast Rift Bolt, choosing your opponent as the target. The cost is nothing and you pay it.
    10. You get priority and pass.
    11. Opponent gets priority and passes.
    12. The top object on the stack (the spell cast in step 9) resolves. Rift Bolt deals 3 damage to your opponent, leaving him at -2 life.
    13. You would get priority, but there is a state-based action to perform. Opponent is at -2 life and loses. Game over.
