posted a message on Gift of Immortality, Kyanois and Tiro of Meletis Posessed Portal in EDH
    Quote from Tanion »

My question is, if I have the Gift attached to K and T... with an active Portal. Can i....

By "active" Portal, do you just mean a Possessed Portal on the battlefield? I don't see anything else that could mean.

    Quote from Tanion »
    1) Order the triggers so that Kyanios [sic] and Tiro dies so that I can miss their trigger when they die under the portalk?

"Miss" their trigger? If that creature is on the battlefield at the beginning of your end step, that ability does trigger, and it would take something like Stifle or you leaving the game to keep it from resolving.
    Quote from Tanion »
    2) Will the gift of Immortality come back attached after the Portal kills them? Essentially creating a soft lock that no one can draw cards?

The Gift of Immortality won't be brought back by its delayed trigger until the next end step (presumably your opponent's).
513.2. If a permanent with an ability that triggers “at the beginning of the end step” enters the
battlefield during this step, that ability won’t trigger until the next turn’s end step. Likewise, if a
delayed triggered ability that triggers “at the beginning of the next end step” is created during this
step, that ability won’t trigger until the next turn’s end step.
In other words, the step doesn’t “back
up” so those abilities can go on the stack. This rule applies only to triggered abilities; it doesn’t
apply to continuous effects whose durations say “until end of turn” or “this turn.” (See rule 514,
    “Cleanup Step.”)

    Quote from Tanion »
    3) or if I'm wrong on all counts... what the hell happens?

    One possible sequence:

    1. Your end step begins. This triggers the abilities of Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis and Possessed Portal.
    2. You would get priority, but there are two triggered abilities to put on the stack. A) You put "At the beginning of your end step, draw a card. Each player may put a land card from his or her hand onto the battlefield, then each opponent who didn't draws a card." on the stack. B) You put "At the beginning of each end step, each player sacrifices a permanent unless he or she discards a card." on the stack.
    3. You get priority and pass.
    4. Opponent gets priority and passes.
    5. The top object on the stack (the ability put there in step 2B) resolves. You decline to discard a card, so you sacrifice Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis. I don't know what your opponent's decision is. This triggers the ability of Gift of Immortality.
    6. You would get priority, but there is a state-based action to process. You put Gift of Immortality into your graveyard.
    7. You would get priority, but there is a triggered ability to put on the stack. You put "When enchanted creature dies, return that card to the battlefield under its owner's control. Return Gift of Immortality to the battlefield attached to that creature at the beginning of the next end step." on the stack.
    8. You get priority and pass.
    9. Opponent gets priority and passes.
    10. The top object on the stack (the ability put there in step 7) resolves. You return Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis to the battlefield. You set up a delayed triggered ability for the next end step.
    11. You get priority and pass.
    12. Opponent gets priority and passes.
    13. The top object on the stack (the ability put there in step 2A) resolves. You draw a card. You don't draw a card. Each player has the option to place a land card from his or her hand onto the battlefield. Each opponent who declined that option draws a card does nothing.
    14. You get priority and ....

During the next end step, you could put the Possessed Portal ability on the stack before putting the Gift of Immortality delayed trigger on the stack. This would enable you to use its ability again as you sacrifice Kynalos and Tiro of Meletis to the Possessed Portal ability. Note that outside that interval within the end step, the Gift of Immortality will be in the graveyard.

posted a message on Mayael The Anima EDH Question
    Quote from Sunzin21 »
Would I be able to use a Kozilek, the great distortion with a Mayael the anima as my commander?

    Yes.

    Quote from Sunzin21 »
Or would the mana symbols in Kozilek's mana cost break some kind of rule?

No, I don't see any blue or black mana symbols or characteristic-defining abilities there.
903.4. The Commander variant uses color identity to determine what cards can be in a deck with a certain commander. The color identity of a card is the color or colors of any mana symbols in that card’s mana cost or rules text, plus any colors defined by its characteristic-defining abilities (see rule 604.3) or color indicator (see rule 204).

903.5c A card can be included in a Commander deck only if every color in its color identity is also found in the color identity of the deck’s commander.
Example: Wort, the Raidmother is a legendary creature with mana cost {4}{R/G}{R/G}. Wort’s color identity is red and green. Each card in a Wort Commander deck must be only red, only green, both red and green, or have no color. Each mana symbol in the mana cost or rules text of a card in this deck must be only red, only green, both red and green, or have no color.

EDIT: I just realized that I omitted a couple key rules:
    105. Colors
105.1. There are five colors in the Magic game: white, blue, black, red, and green.

105.4. If a player is asked to choose a color, he or she must choose one of the five colors. “Multicolored” is not a color. Neither is “colorless.”

posted a message on Green creature questions
    Quote from The Fluff »
Hi. I would just like to clarify on these two things. Have put them both in the same thread to avoid making two threads.

Question 1: if I have a Narnam Renegade enchanted by Rancor, making it 3/2 creature. Then I attack with the renegade.. other player blocks with a Wall of Omens. Two damage would still be trampled over to the player with the Wall of Omens. Because a creature with deathtouch and trample only need to deal 1 damage to the blocking creature. Is that correct?

    Yes.

702.2b Any nonzero amount of combat damage assigned to a creature by a source with deathtouch is considered to be lethal damage, regardless of that creature’s toughness. See rules 510.1c–d.

702.19b The controller of an attacking creature with trample first assigns damage to the creature(s) blocking it. Once all those blocking creatures are assigned lethal damage, any remaining damage is assigned as its controller chooses among those blocking creatures and the player or planeswalker the creature is attacking. When checking for assigned lethal damage, take into account damage already marked on the creature and damage from other creatures that’s being assigned during the same combat damage step, but not any abilities or effects that might change the amount of damage that’s actually dealt. The attacking creature’s controller need not assign lethal damage to all those blocking creatures but in that case can’t assign any damage to the player or planeswalker it’s attacking.
Deathtouch doesn't change the amount of damage that's actually dealt, so the exclusion doesn't apply.
    Quote from The Fluff »
Question 2: I put a treetop village from my hand into play. Then I activate treetop ability to turn it into a 3/3 ape. I also have an Oran- Rief, the vastwood in play. Can I tap oran-rief the vastwood to give the treetop village a +1/+1 counter? I think this is correct, because this is the turn that the treetop village came into the battlefield.

    [card]Oran-Rief, the vastwood[/card] -> Oran-Rief, the vastwood

    green: yes
    creature: yes
that entered the battlefield this turn: yes

Yes, it fits all the requirements. Oran-Reif's ability isn't a triggered ability, so it doesn't care that the Treetop Village wasn't a creature when entering the battlefield.

posted a message on Combat-conditional spells and no attackers declared.
    Quote from lyonhaert »
I understand that if no attackers are declared that the declare blockers and combat damage steps are skipped. I'm pretty sure this also means I would not be able to cast Aleatory or Chaotic Strike during such a combat phase because the "after blockers are declared" condition is then impossible.

    Yes.
506.6f If a spell states that it may be cast “only during combat after blockers are declared,” but the
declare blockers step is skipped that combat phase (see rule 508.5), then the spell may not be
    cast during that combat phase
    .

    Quote from lyonhaert »
Panic should still be usable in response [sic] to the beginning of combat step, but since a combat phase with no attackers declared would proceed as beginning of combat -> declare attackers -> end of combat, can Panic still be cast in response [sic] to the declare attackers step (between it and the end of combat step)?

Yes, it can be cast during the declare attackers step.

posted a message on Brisela, Voice of Nightmares
    Quote from Chaineddown »
Interesting situation tonight in kitchen table magic with my son. He melded Brisela, Voice of Nightmares which obviously locks me from casting spells with 3 mana or less. I'm playing U/R Crush and have tons of removal spells including Clutch of Currents, a one drop. BUT, this card has an awaken cost. Can I pay the Awaken cost and still remove Brisela or is it based on the mana cost at the top of the card???
The mana cost of Clutch of Currents is U
202.1. A card’s mana cost is indicated by mana symbols near the top of the card. (See rule 107.4.) On most cards, these symbols are printed in the upper right corner. Some cards from the Future Sight set have alternate frames in which the mana symbols appear to the left of the illustration.

117.9c An alternative cost doesn’t change a spell’s mana cost, only what its controller has to pay to cast it. Spells and abilities that ask for that spell’s mana cost still see the original value.

Therefore, its converted mana cost is 1.
202.3. The converted mana cost of an object is a number equal to the total amount of mana in its mana cost, regardless of color.
Example: A mana cost of 3UU translates to a converted mana cost of 5.

Your opponents Brisela will keep you from casting it.

posted a message on Stitcher's Graft and Flash
    Quote from Skyrian »
I am curious to how Stitcher's Graft untap clause would effect a creature that it attaches to after declare attackers step has happened and the creature is tapped and attacking.
For that ability to trigger, the creature would need to be declared as a attacker at a time when Stitcher's Graft is attached to it.
603.2. Whenever a game event or game state matches a triggered ability’s trigger event, that ability automatically triggers. The ability doesn’t do anything at this point.

When could that ability trigger in the case you describe? Not during the declaration of the attackers, because that wasn't an equipped creature at the time. Not at the time Stitcher's Graft was attached, because nothing got declared as an attacker at that time.
    508. Declare Attackers Step
508.2. Second, any abilities that triggered on attackers being declared go on the stack. (See rule 603, “Handling Triggered Abilities.”)
508.2a Abilities that trigger on a creature attacking trigger only at the point the creature is declared as an attacker. They will not trigger if a creature attacks and then that creature’s characteristics change to match the ability’s trigger condition.
Example: A permanent has the ability “Whenever a green creature attacks, destroy that creature at end of combat.” If a blue creature attacks and is later turned green, the ability will not trigger.

posted a message on I need help about this cards ability
    Quote from Connermtgcg »
after this card gets destroyed, sent to the graveyard, or exiled, does the ability still stay in play?
No, just like the ability didn't work while Butcher of Malakir was still in a hand or a library.
112.6. Abilities of an instant or sorcery spell usually function only while that object is on the stack. Abilities of all other objects usually function only while that object is on the battlefield. The exceptions are as follows:

None of the excceptions applies here.
112.6a Characteristic-defining abilities function everywhere, even outside the game. (See rule 604.3.)
112.6b An ability that states which zones it functions in functions only from those zones.
112.6c An object’s ability that allows a player to pay an alternative cost rather than its mana cost functions in any zone in which its mana cost can be paid (which, in general, means it functions on the stack). An object’s ability that otherwise modifies what that particular object costs to cast functions on the stack.
112.6d An object’s ability that restricts or modifies how that particular object can be played or cast functions in any zone from which it could be played or cast.
112.6e An object’s ability that restricts or modifies what zones that particular object can be played or cast from functions everywhere, even outside the game.
112.6f An object’s ability that states it can’t be countered or can’t be countered by spells and abilities functions on the stack.
112.6g An object’s ability that modifies how that particular object enters the battlefield functions as that object is entering the battlefield. See rule 614.12.
112.6h An object’s ability that states counters can’t be placed on that object functions as that object is entering the battlefield in addition to functioning while that object is on the battlefield.
112.6i An object’s activated ability that has a cost that can’t be paid while the object is on the battlefield functions from any zone in which its cost can be paid.
112.6j A trigger condition that can’t trigger from the battlefield functions in all zones it can trigger from. Other trigger conditions of the same triggered ability may function in different zones.
Example: Absolver Thrull has the ability “When Absolver Thrull enters the battlefield or the creature it haunts dies, destroy target enchantment.” The first trigger condition functions from the battlefield and the second trigger condition functions from the exile zone. (See rule 702.54, “Haunt.”)
112.6k An ability whose cost or effect specifies that it moves the object it’s on out of a particular zone functions only in that zone, unless that ability’s trigger condition, or a previous part of that ability’s cost or effect, specifies that the object is put into that zone. The same is true if the effect of that ability creates a delayed triggered ability whose effect moves the object out of a particular zone.
Example: Reassembling Skeleton says “{1}{B}: Return Reassembling Skeleton from your graveyard to the battlefield tapped.” A player may activate this ability only if Reassembling Skeleton is in his or her graveyard.
112.6m An ability that modifies the rules for deck construction functions before the game begins. Such an ability modifies not just the Comprehensive Rules, but also the Magic: The Gathering Tournament Rules and any other documents that set the deck construction rules for a specific format. However, such an ability can’t affect the format legality of a card, including whether it’s banned or restricted. The current Magic: The Gathering Tournament Rules can be found at WPN.Wizards.com/en/resources/rules-documents.
112.6n Abilities of emblems, plane cards, vanguard cards, scheme cards, and conspiracy cards function in the command zone. See rule 113, “Emblems”; rule 901, “Planechase”; rule 902, “Vanguard”; rule 904, “Archenemy”; and rule 905, “Conspiracy Draft.”

posted a message on Hamlet Captain Interractions
    Quote from TBuzzsaw »
Ah, so anything that comes onto the field after attacks are declared doesn't get the +1/+1 trigger from Captain?
Anything that enters the battlefield (or becomes a Human) after the "Whenever Hamlet Captain attacks or blocks, other Humans you control get +1/+1 until end of turn." ability resolves doesn't get the +1/+1 from that ability.
611.2c If a continuous effect generated by the resolution of a spell or ability modifies the
characteristics or changes the controller of any objects, the set of objects it affects is determined
when that continuous effect begins. After that point, the set won’t change.
    (Note that this works
differently than a continuous effect from a static ability.) A continuous effect generated by the
resolution of a spell or ability that doesn’t modify the characteristics or change the controller of
any objects modifies the rules of the game, so it can affect objects that weren’t affected when
that continuous effect began. If a single continuous effect has parts that modify the
characteristics or changes the controller of any objects and other parts that don’t, the set of
objects each part applies to is determined independently.
Example: An effect that reads “All white creatures get +1/+1 until end of turn” gives
the bonus to all permanents that are white creatures when the spell or ability resolves—
even if they change color later—and doesn’t affect those that enter the battlefield or turn
    white afterward.
