  • posted a message on [[Official]] PRIMER: SIMIC MIDRANGE (featuring Prophet of Kruphix)
Took this Simic Midrange deck to a 3-1 4th place at last nights FNM with 23 players.

Round 1: vs. BANT Walkers (2-0)
Game one: I was on the play and played a temple of mystery shipped a land to the bottom and passed. Opponent played an untapped Temple Garden and an elvish mystic. Turns 2-4 were fairly uneventful for both sides as our draws weren't the best, on turn five I played Prophet, passed the turn and played a Kalonian Hydra at the end of their turn and upon a successful counter of his Dissolve he conceded the game.

Game 2: Opponent starts out with forest into mystic and passes. I make the same play and pass back. He plays a tapped Hallowed Fountain and a Sylvan Caryatid. I draw and play a Temple of Mystery and a Voyaging Satyr. He drops a Plains and an Archangel of Thune and passes the turn. I play a simic guildgate and Kiora, targeting Archangel, I continue this until I draw up Prophet (Kiora at 6), play prophet and -5 Kiora for my first emblem. He goes to Alpha Strike with a Brimaz, an Archangel and an Aetherling (Didn't leave a blue source available for Aetherling), I flashed in a Vortex Elemental blocking Aetherling and shuffling both into our decks, then I Overloaded a cyclonic Rift, He Casts Archangel and Sylvan Caryatid and passes. I play Progenitor mimic copying Archangel of Thune and pass (my board is currently 2 Krakens, 3 Mystics, 1 Voyaging Satyr, 1 Prophet of Kruphix and 1 Pro Mim (Archangel) He casts Brimaz and Jace, Architect of Thought and attacks with Archangel, I rapid Hybridization it, and cast Kalonian Hydra into another concession by the opponent.

    Round 2: vs. Mono Red Aggro/Devotion (2-1)
Game 1: I was on the draw, but there isn't really much to say here except for 3 consecutive Fanatic of Mogis. (Loss)

Game 2: I'm on the play and am able to turn 4 Kiora and keep the board locked down with 3 Vortex Elementals. When I get my emblem 4 turns later he alpha strikes me, I remove 1 Boros Reckoner via Vortex Elemental and cast an Overloaded Cyclonic Rift he replays an Ash Zealot and another Boros Reckoner. On my turn I play Courser of Kruphix and a land from the top of my library (back to 20) then play prophet of kruphix and pass the turn. He plays another reckoner and passes the turn back, I cast Progenitor mimic targeting my Kraken token and take my turn I play a land (10 total and 1 mystic) I pay the costs of the Vortex Elementals targeting both Reckoners, He scoops.

Game 3: A turn 4 Aetherling with a blue source available sums up game 3 pretty quickly.

Round 3: vs. UW Control (0-2)
Both games were pretty much what you'd expect in this match-up and I was basic unable to play anything due to very well timed elixirs from the opponent.

Round 4: vs. Junk Reanimator (2-0)
Games 1: I landed a 5th turn kiora and had a cyclonic rift for all 3 major players he tried to Whip back (Angel of Serenity, Ashen Rider and Shadowborn Demon) and a Counter Spell for his Obzedat which caused him to scoop due to 3 Krakens in play on my side.

Game 2: A turn one Pithing Needle calling Whip of Erebos and always seeming to have a Dissolve, Essence Scatter or Nullify in hand along with Plummets and Unravel the Aethers at the exact moment needed lead to an Aetherling/Kraken beatdown.

Overall I am very happy with this deck and look forward to playing it this Saturday at the Star City Games Invitational Qualifier in Spokane, Washington.

  • posted a message on [Primer] Oops! All Spells!
I do apologize if this primer is a little awkward, as it is the first one I have written.
I wanted to write this up for everyone to see. This is a deck that my friends and I have started playing in our area with much success and it is growing in popularity within the community around Eastern Washington/Northern Idaho.

Oops! All Spells! Is a deck that follows the idea that turns 1 and 2 are all that are needed to play the game. It can consistently win no later than turn 3 (98% turn 3, 95% turn 2 and 92% turn 1 wins).

The 1 turn win decks are the epitome of vintage, where the mindset is early game = dice roll, mid-game= draw your hand and end game is the first turn.

The way this deck works is you produce enough mana to either cast Balustrade Spy or Undercity Informer and use the ability of the Informer to flip your deck into the graveyard, when this happens the ability of your Narcomoeba activates to bring them to the battlefield where you then sacrifice them to flashback Dread Return and target Angel of Glory's Rise which will return your two primary targets 1. Laboratory Maniac and 2. Azami, Lady of Scrolls which combine to win the game when you go to draw the card you don't have.

Normally in this section we would talk about the different options that are available to us, but with this deck there really isn't an option to branch off to different cards than what will be listed later on in this primer.

    Creatures
Wild Cantor This guy can be tutored up to get that extra mana you need to begin the combo.
Undercity Informer/Balustrade Spy either card can be used to initiate the combo.
Elvish Spirit Guide/Simian Spirit Guide. Both of these cards are our sources of initial mana since we don't run any lands.
Street Wraith one of our card draw mechanics.
Narcomoeba. This card is what allows us to flashback the Dread Return in our graveyard.
Combo Pieces: Azami, Lady of Scrolls, Angel of Glory's Rise and Laboratory Maniac.

    Instants and Sorceries
Mana Production: Dark Ritual, Manamorphose, and Cabal Ritual.
Summoner's Pact: Used to fetch up either Elvish Spirit Guide or Wild Cantor.
Gitaxian Probe: Primarily used for draw effect.
Cabal Therapy: Used to get a combo piece out of our hands when we can't discard it.
Dread Return: Used as part of the combo.

    Artifacts
Lotus Petal and Chrome Mox: Both are used to provide us with the mana without running land.
