When type 2 (ie standard) was created, it was supppsed to be cheaper than type 1. While it _is_ cheapER, it isn't cheap at all.
Legacy, when it was adpated from type 1.5, was supposed to be cheaper (hence, mana drain was banned), Look where it is now.
Modern was supposed to be cheap, allowing players to hold on to their cards . Look where it is now.
EDH was supposed to be cheap (hey, only 1 card). While they COULD be built cheap, it isn't.
ANY format, once it becomes popular enough, ceases to be cheap.
Agreed with all the above. The price entry point for this format will be cheap but in the long it will be just the same as any other format.
If this becomes popular enough, the prices will spike then it will cease to affordable by the majority. The only thing that can save a new format and make it cheap even 10 years from now is reprints. Let's be honest, it's not like WoTC have a good reprint policy unless they support this format and reprint like crazy for this format if supported.
I don't mind if they reprint CoCo aand reduce the value of my playsets to like @30 if it means that i have more opponents to play with.
So true... Yes I agree that if Frontier is to survive and become the format that most people can afford then WoTC need to reprint more and make cards that become staples for accessible. If WotC did a Masters' for this format it would kill it, premium prices for a booster doesn't incentivise many players to buy the product and has little effect on secondary market. Banning this early would be crazy, maybe wait another 2 years and let's see how things are going. Anyways, I'm really excited for this format to break through.
Funny Enough, apparently the majority of decks weren't Siege rhino centered decks like some of us thought. The top 8 in the first week showed a lot of variety in the decks.
I plan on playing in the Hareruya Frontier Challenge Cup on Oct 30 if I can manage a deck by that time. I'll post results if I can.
Yes that would be awesome! Would you be able to post what sort of decks were brewed also? Im just curious as I am wanting to build a deck for this format also.
Bleh. So many awesomely fun cards from RTR to Theros.
I mean I get that you don't want to have Thoughtseize: The Gathering, but it seems like wherever you pick some absurdly powerful midrange card is going to define the format.
I expect the two decks will be JVP/Dig/TC, and Coco. Not enough depth of functionally identical cards to support aggro decks.
Yes, those sets have so many good cards in them. The problem is that they are kinda hard to get at the moment. Thoughtseize is kinda pricey.
Yeah I agree the new format does need more depth and functionality, but as time goes on with more sets coming out the problem will be solved. I hope Seige Rhinos don't reach even near that price point. Really hope WoTC reviews their reprint policy for this new format if they choose to support it.
the problem isnt the formats, but the singles/collectible aspect of mtg. cards will be expensive, always. cards are made expensive because people want them, they got into extreme prices with edh, it will happen to any format that is popular, it isn't a solution to pricing to make new formats
Yeah I agree. It isn't the formats that's a problem its the singles, very expensive for some of the cards to jump into any format. If Wizards & Mark were alluding to this format being made perhaps they have a plan to reprint a lot so it's cheaper for newer players to get into the new format.
The Modern format has been introduced in 2011, with cards from 2003.
In a similar way, the Frontier format is tested in 2016, with cards from 2015.
I may be wrong, but I think that Frontier is created because Magic is in a new phase of growth. Frontier will help to get the massive amount of new players globally hooked for the longer term. All these new players may not be able to enter the Modern format due to high costs (and skill) required. Now with your investment in recent sets, you can play not only Standard (which is short-term) but also Frontier (which is designed to last).
It's gonna be good for the game, it means more tourneys with affordable decks, more players and possibly more prize money
I really hope WotC finds a way to reprint the crap out of all these cards coming out, yes they are in huge quantities now but wait 3 years later, will those cards still be easy and accessible to the newer players? This format could potentially have the same problem as Modern if they do not figure out a way to reprint the formats staples like crazy. I welcome this format and looking very much forward to it.
Two big mtg vendors/companies are collaborating together to bring a new format known as frontier format. This allows all cards from M15 up to be used in decks. This also a non-rotating format. What are your guy's thoughts?
First off, what formats do you plan on playing - Standard, Modern, EDH/Commander and pauper etc? This will determine the best solution into investing into the game. Also do you have a playgroup and what do they normally play? What is you local scene like?
I'd like to see a return to Kamigawa, because I started somewhere in Mirrodin and Kamigawa was my first new world. So its kind of nostalgia.
I'd like to see a return to Ulgrotha just for a joke but I doubt they'd do it
kamigawa was the first plane when i was first introduced to MtG, but didn't start playing until Innistrad. Kamigawa made me think, ohh that looks cool.
I have seen a lot of really good counterfeits since I've begun playing MtG. Those that have tons of fakes in tournaments should be dealt with according to the tournament rules and regulations. But I have met someone who accidentally bought some too without knowing they were fake - they were new to MtG. I guess it's up to each circumstance on how to deal with them. There is a demand for fake mtg cards because some cards are ridiculously expensive. Logically if you can find an alternative, the consumer will go for what is the lowest price. I don't really mind people who use fakes if it's reasonable or they tell me before hand.

Whether we like it or not, we still need morals even if it is subjective.
Another question I have, sorry if it should be asked somewhere else. I told my friends that I got mine for MSRP and started to give me a lecture about how I couldn't of because if i did then the store would be losing money. Can someone explain to me how distribution of MtG products works?
For example do distributors buy the supplies and products and then sell to retailers? and is there a contract or law that WoTC has with the distributors from jacking up the price? I know suppliers can jack up the price.
Just curious, have many people pre-ordered their copies and for how much? I'm just interested to see how much these are going for in the states. I'm from NZ and pr-ordered mine for msrp. I'm very fortunate I have a FLGS that provides MtG products just for msrp.

There has been very good turnouts and varying results in decklists.

I stumbled across this in reddit: Frontier Format

We really need to go back.
