Quick question that came up last weekend while I was training for a modern PPTQ with a friend and we had no luck with Google for this one
I attack with 2 creatures one of which is equipped with a Cranial Plating.
My opponent assigns one blocker to the creature equipped and none to the other.
I pay double black to move the plating to my non-blocked creature.
He kills it in response.
What happens to the plating? Does it fall on the ground or does it stay on the first creature?
I'm going to bump this thread.
I've recently started reading the forums more during commuting and the viewing experience has been absolutely horrendous.
Especially when the other sites I'm browsing (teamliquid / liquiddota, shoutout to all SC2 / Dota2 fans ;)) run super smoothly.
Major complaints: navigation is really hard and loading times are slow as hell. Cutting all signatures from users should be a first step. Do something about images too...
I guess the last option is, they don't get reprinted in MM2 but they have plan to reprint it in the next set, right?
Anyway, thanks for your advice, I'll at least wait for MM and decide from there.
The last "expensive" card I need for my Junk list are the Fulminator Mages.
And while I'm fine saving some of my money to buy a Goyf I know I'm gonna play all the time, I'm a bit more reluctant to do it for a sideboard card...
Any speculation on the chances it get reprinted soon?
awesome to see you ran my list and did well with it. Although I have to admit, that I would not recommend this list for the current metagame. As you said, it is very clunky and was built for a much slower meta before Cruise/Swiftspear/Siege Rhino.
Yeah, I shamelessly stole your list
Really liked it to be honest. It clearly has a control feel to it, which was what I was looking for at the time, while making good use of the Tarmogoyf.
I mean, the list that was posted after mine (congrats to you by the way!) is extremely close I feel so it's probably one of the best chance this deck has to succeed, which I hope it does, even if I'm probably switching gears for a while
I decided to quit my 4C Gifts deck about a month ago and convert it to The Rock because I already had many of the cards and I feel it's just a much stronger deck to play.
Why am I telling you this? I thought I would do a kind of "last stand" tournament last Sunday before definitely switching because I still like the deck. Turned out, I went 5-0 and first place in a close to 30 people local tournament which is usually pretty competitive, not too bad so here's my (very short) report:
Bogles, 2-1:
* I Keep a decent hand with Lili and Goyf but he has a second creature and a ***** ton of auras and I die horribly while drawing targeted removals.
* Turn 1 discard followed by Iona on white and it was pretty much game over.
* Absolutely don't remember that one.
Splinter Twin, 2-0:
* First game is weird, I keep what I think is a decent hand with Goyf and removal but Goyf gets killed and I proceed to draw lands for 4 or 5 turns straight. On his side, he has the combo but I handle his only creature. He then spend the next 5 turns Thought Scouring and Digging in search of a creature to combo with but can't seem to find it. Turn 7, I have literally nothing else to do than hardcasting Elesh that resolves and I just win the game from here. Pretty lucky win I must admit.
* Turn 2 Torpor Orb + Goyf beatdown + removal = easy win.
Burn, 2-1:
* Game 1 is a walk over, no idea what he's on, start shocking myself and I'm dead a few turns later.
* Iona on red before he has enough damage to kill me.
* Intense game: Goyf does some serious work and at some point, I'm at 1 life and he's 2 turns from death. He doesn't draw the last point of damage and I win that one. Funny thing is, I had a fetch for half the game that I had completely forgotten to crack while I was running on low mana for the whole game. Sometimes, mistakes win you games
Pod, 2-1:
* I die.
* We both mulligan to 5 and my top decks are better. I think a resolved Gifts into Elesh sealed the deal.
* Pretty even and grindy game. He doesn't draw pod but has enough stuff and we trade blows evenly. We're at turn 3 of additional turns and he has adopted a pretty defensive stance to go for the draw when I topdeck Elesh followed by Abrupt Decay to close it at the very last moment. He had no chance of winning but I avoid a draw pretty luckily here.
UR Control, 2-0:
* Don't remember exactly the beginning but I managed to resolve Elesh with Lingering Souls and it's enough. I think he kept a not so good hand also.
* He has a very good hand but I keep one with 4 discards (1 Thoughseize, 2 IoK and 1 duress) and he never comes back while I topdeck decently.
My main issue with the list is that it's too slow and also too reliant on Gifts to perform. It feels unstable I would say. When you draw decently, it performs well but I've had a few too many "Oops, I lost" for my liking... It's still fun to play and quite uncommon so your opponent wondering what the **** you're trying to do is always funny. MVP of the list is definitely Goyf though, he does *so* much work here, it's crazy, if you have it, trust me, it's auto include.
Who knows, maybe I'll pick the deck some time in the future when the environment is not too competitive
Hi!
Thanks again for the side “guide” you provided.
First, I have a couple questions about your list if you don’t mind
I’m still relatively new to the deck so it might sound dumb but I’m curious:
- I noticed you don’t play a basic island. Is it something you miss sometimes for example after boarding the 2 Dispel?
- On the other hand, you chose to play a Stirring Wildwood. Never tried the card myself but I’m curious about what purpose it actually serves.
- How do you feel about the 2 birds? I’ve always thought that if you want to ramp reliably, you need like 4 to 6 mana dorks. How was the ratio of games were you had it in you opening hand vs late game dead topdeck?
- Do you feel like the 4 Decay are absolutely required in the list? Vs for example 3 + another “kill something” card, dismember maybe? Or a second Lingering Souls?
As far as sideboard goes, it looks really good!
You seem to side out the 3 Lilis quite often, that’s something I rarely do because it has always seemed really good, no matter the situation (discard or sacrifice), what do you think?
My current list has a Terastodon vs Tron. Never had the opportunity to test it since he is on at my FNM, ever tried it?
You have 2 Timely Reinforcements but only side 1 against Jund, just a typo maybe?
Last question and I stop being annoying My meta is pretty much similar to yours except there are a couple of hatebears decks floating around. How would you side against it?
Also super curious about that list that won a PTQ! Especially about if he runs Goyf or not… I’m on the verge on buying them and with two lists showing good results with it, I would probably give in
I believe you should diversify your fetches (most lists run 3/3/2 Marsh Flats/Verdant Catacombs/Misty Rainforest). It's important to have lots of black fetches as you may wish to play t1 discard or DRS without taking 2 from a shock. It also protects you from Extirpate. Minor point but 26 lands may be slightly slightly safer (just add a Snow-Covered Swamp).
Have you considered a 4/3 split of Liliana and Souls, instead of your 3/4? I run 4/3 and like it quite a bit, but I'm not too sure how the two cards do vs. BGx (I haven't played much against that). Since they run their own Lilianas, maybe the 3/4 is better.
I wouldn't run Iona in the board if there's no burn (monored) in your meta. Elesh Norn deals with merfolk almost as well (and possibly better if they already have a board presence before you get the combo). There's nothing else you'd really want Iona against (unless hatebears is monowhite... but they still have Aether Vials).
Vendilion Clique is a good choice against Tron, as is Shadow of Doubt, Fulminator Mage and Aven Mindcensor. Those creatures also have the bonus of being recurrable with Sun Titan, which is why I run it over Grave Titan (but I might be wrong in this decision). Is it RG Tron, or blue, or UW, or what? Stony Silence is also strong vs. RG Tron. However, I think our Tron matchup is pretty awful. However, I think our Tron matchup is pretty bad, so you might not want to worry too much about that matchup.
Hi!
Thanks for the answer!
I believe you are right about fetches. In fact, that's the split I wanted to do but I was a bit short on money to buy the third playset at that time and never did it. Going to fix that.
The 26th land as a snow-covered swamp seems like a good idea. However I really have no idea what to remove. I like my recursion with Sun Titan / Snap / Witness so I'd like to keep them for the moment. Which would leave me with either PtE / Abrupt Decay or one of the discard but I like neither solution...
I have another tournament in two weeks.
So far, my side looks like:
Affinity / Tron:
2 Stony Silence
Which leaves me with 4 slots (although I feel like too many of the cards are there against aggro, not sure I need all of them). I could try to dedicate some of it to Tron as you suggested (btw, by Tron, I meant both RG and monoU versions). What worries me the most however is BGx decks. I believe Linvala is going to solve a few problems. But beside her, I feel like the match-up against Jund and its variant is going to be hard.
After lurking this thread for quite some time, I've finally been able to put up a list and find the time to play it in tournaments so I decided it was time to register for some advice.
Here is my list, as you can see, it's the control version of the deck (I really wanted to change from my usual "attack!" type of gameplan):
First, any comment on it? As far as I know, it's a quite common list but if there is something obvious I can improve, I welcome any suggestions.
But, more importantly, I do not have any sideboard! I went for some playtest this weekend and got pretty much destroyed but I could not really pinpoint what I would need.
Meta has a lot of GBx decks. Tron, Twin and UWr control are also quite present. Affinity here and there. And some other aggro decks as well (merfolk, hatebear, hexproof on top of my head though i did not play against them).
Ideas so far: 2 stony silence just to be safe against affinity, maybe Iona but I don't quite know against who. I think I also need a wrath effect (Damnation, Supreme Verdict?). I've seen Kitchen Finks and Timely Reinforcements quite a lot. But beside that?
Basically, if you guys have any advice regarding sideboard and sideboard strategies given my meta, that would be most helpful!
