My rationale being that Harbinger/Seas are duds, whereas Master is nice but a bit too slow. E-Truth beats Empty the Warrens, Relic usually slows them down while going off, and countermagic is something you try to line up with Gifts Ungiven or cost reducers as best you can.
Reporting is something I play by ear, to be honest. Some tournaments I have really detailed notes and can really do a play-by-play of what happened, others I'm kind of where you are. I usually scribble down how I sideboarded after the match on the notepad I use to keep track of my life total, though.
E-Truth should have definitely come in, yes. With your 75, I'm probably looking at something like -4 Spreading Seas, -2 PhImage, +2 Sphere, +2 Relic, +1 Surgical, +1 E-Truth. You could mayyyyybe talk me into a 1-of Venser over the 3rd Master of Waves, but I do like Master a lot in the matchup.
That was a great report. Regarding the Phoenix matchup... I generally recommend cutting the Images postboard. They are poor against removal, and that deck has a good amount of it plus tons of ways to dig for it. I've had a lot of success against Phoenix decks, and the way I approach the matchup is going all-out to contain the Phoenixes and Things in the Ice.
Hi everyone, just wanted to announce that because of the recent changes in the Modern metagame, I'll be overhauling the now rather outdated Matchups and Sideboarding section of the primer. This will take some time, so please be patient, but I hope to have something reasonably comprehensive for you sooner rather than later.
@jokerstyle00: I always keep my deck up to date in the Sample Decklists section of the primer. Here's a link to it on AetherHub as well.
Feeling good about it. Those 3 matchups you mentioned are all in our favor, as are Burn and Shadow (two other major players). Various Merfolk pilots have been crushing it on Magic Online.
What I'm citing is years of well-tested lines of play in which Master of Waves is one of the best, if not the absolute best card to see against Burn. It's not just my evidence - there are thousands of Merfolk players out there, and the collective wisdom over years of play experience and tons of players is that Master helps you stabilize and close the game out simultaneously. If it's not one of the best cards in the matchup, something is off. Your questioning this leads me to believe that you are newer to the deck, because every veteran pilot of the deck that I know of knows this, and leverages it accordingly. This is conventional wisdom.
Not for me. I 5-0'd with a pretty standard list just last week. If you want to talk Legacy, I suggest you come over to the FishMTG Discord chat. The forum here is pretty dead.
@Shoebaccha: Sorry I didn't get to this earlier. I'd sideboard as follows with your list against Storm:
-4 Harbinger
-4 Seas
-4 Master of Waves
+4 Relic
+3 E-Truth
+2 Dismember
+2 Retort
+1 Pierce

It absolutely would give us a huge boost. I'd be pretty surprised if they did print it, though.
