Honestly, this is one of the worst cards I've seen Wizards print in years. This is straight up awful in every format. I can't think of a single situation where you'd want to play this.
As far as existing cats and their effectiveness, I 100% disagree. G-Jedit is a pretty great warrior Commander, with the forest walk portion being very interesting and allows for some build around space beyond tribal support. Temur Sabretooth laughs at your claim. Nacatl War Pride isn't useful? It's one of the more unique, and abusable effects, in the format. Cats now have a lord and token producers.
In fairness, he did say most, not all.
All tribes have mostly unplayable jank, what makes this any different? Should I sit and list the ~60 cards that debunk his claim?
I feel there are much better Selesnaya commanders out there, however until we can see the 2 "alternative" commanders I will not pass a full judgment.
As for the "Dragons=Tribes" Theory, I don't feel that this is true as couldn't we be looking at an Artifact tribal as well?
However with this spoiler i will put my money on that The Ur Dragon will be the commander of the dragon tribal. Both Ur and Arahbo both have the "Eminence" mechanic.
Also i have a feeling as we now have a 5c and a 2c deck spoiled. I reckon that the other two will be a 3c and a 4c.
Well there are probably better Gruul commanders than Atarka, World Render. Doesn't make her a bad Dragon commander.
Artifact is not a tribe, it is a card type. I'd save Artifact creatures for a different quad of decks alongside enchantment, land, and spell themes.
We could also see a colorless deck and a UBR deck, though of course they've mentioned that the decks aren't color balanced.
I know artifact is a card type but i would love to see a mono-brown precon. Thropter tribal? Ha!
We just had an artifact deck with Breya. I seriously doubt we're getting another artifact-heavy deck so soon.
Look he couldn't understand totally unambiguous statements. I wouldn't bother trying to get him to understand how cat tribal has much worse support than dragon tribal. Way too complicated.
Cat tribal pffff. I guess it falls udner the unexpected tribe
Nope
Cats is really popular and known in mtg fans have Ben begging for years a legendary that supports cats.
They would have had more decks in edh if a cat legendary with a lord ability was printed earlier.
And now they finally got their wish.
Its unexpected for the fact it doesn't have a proper legendary. No way its popular enough to compete with other tribes. So yes i put it into unexpected tribe for the fact it doesn't have as mutch support. This is their first WG legendary afterall.
This is true, but compare ~150 cats in existence with ~170 dragons, what is the definition of "popular".
Popular = Regarded favorably
The number of existing cards is not at all a measure of popularity. Not even related.
Yes, they do need help. I have no issue with Cats getting a deck, but Angels need some sort of tribal support beyond "here is a big legendary Angel, go beat face". Card Draw, Mana Ramp/Cost reduction, Angel Lords etc etc.
I'm thinking that being mainly white is the reason that angels don't have lots of card draw and mana ramp rather than Wizards arbitrarily hating on angels in favor of printing lots of amazing cats like, geez I don't know, Jungle Lion?
It does come with a warning label.
Seems like a huge gamble in any competitive format outside of EDH.
I do like this version of the mana layout.

Besides most existing cats are terrible in EDH.

Even by MTGS standards that seems like a ridiculously petty objection.
Its arguably better. Even though you have to pay for it you can use it multiple times a turn and it gives trample.
Because angels really needed the help?
