I love the art, but I'm a little disappointed by the card. You know, an attacking 1/1 can die easily and a 1/1 that must block is pretty useless, because it have to block in pair with the king cat.
I agree on the blocking 1/1 but I'm not sure I do on the attacking 1/1. I think it will be more effective in multiplayer where you can get him out early on turn 2/3 and attack players that don't have a board presence yet and churn out a couple tokens. Also it doesn't say the token created from attacking has to attack the same player so you could split off at a safer target as well.
Who is excited about King Cat? I know a buddy of mine is going to be very excited about it since he loves cats. I'm interested in him but I'm not sure if he would fit into my Mikaeus deck or not and I'm not sure I would want to build anther mono-white deck around him. Though I did make Mikaeus to not be a token deck so I guess I could go full blown white weenie with King Cat at the helm...
^^^ Link? I have little idea what's going on, since I eschew the Rumour Mill (except the confirmed spoilers) and Magic General as much as I can... people in those forums are crazy.
Honestly, I don't think the changes are big enough to really matter all that much. It's going to spawn a bunch of ultracrepidarians to rant about it for the next 10 months and once the first set of the new block comes out in the fall it will be ingrained in everyone already and no one will notice anymore.
I have faith that the designers and everyone else at WotC know what they need to be able to do, so that everything they want/desire on the cards is possible to give the best products they can.
However, Waste Not "flavor text" (if we can call it that) is just not interesting. But apparently that's what the community voted on to have it so meh. I don't think it's that great of a card to see much use in any format anyway.
Hey Hey all. I've been in the middle of changing jobs and therefore moving a few states away from where I currently am (3rd time moving in 13 months wooooooooooo) so I haven't been able to join in much but I'm still lurking!
I'm excited about Kiora from an EDH standpoint, I'm in the middle of building a Progenitus Superfriends deck so I think she could work there. I'm really just excited for the next set in general, especially with all the rumors flying about for what's going to be in it (like Black DoJ)
But I hope everyone had a fantastic holiday season and I should be able to be more active again in a few weeks once the move is finished.
WooOOOOoooOOoOoOOoOooOO 3:20 in the mooooooorrrrrnnniiinnnggggggggggg
Two of the other players and myself are all getting cards for each other. Another one of the guys has been playing magic for years and got the rest of us into playing early this year so since he already has a much bigger library of cards I got him something different (though still MTG related). I figure while I'm getting them some cards that won't be fun to play against it will help evolve and expand our play since we're still fairly new.
Here is the recap of some main points that I think cover where we've gotten so far. I thought I would throw this together and make it easier for everyone to catch up again.
I'm thinking of a harsh snow/ice world in which the humanoid creatures invoke and/or draw power from the greater beings of the plane as they struggle to survive. I don't like the idea of the humanoids worshipping the greater beings in cults, as that would be too much like Theros, but I think it would be good if there were a connection between them.
This also leaves room for "free agents" that live outside of these societies. I think that's where dwarves, goblins, etc. would fit.
In any case, here's what I'm thinking:
Humanoids: W Humans (civilized/Viking) U Humans (wizards) B Humans (sorcerers... like, just more nefarious); open to suggestions R Humans (barbarians) G Elves (wild, but within their own society)
Non-humanoid: W Griffins (please... there need to be some good griffins, even if we're not making cards) U Krakens B Ravens...? Open to suggestions R Dwarves, goblins G Dryads...? Anything else?
Greater beings: WU Ice elemental UB Ocean/deep water elemental BR Fire dragon/ volcano elemental RG ??? GW Light/life elemental (I'm imagining like a goddess figure or something)
Geography:
Continents covered in ice -- W snow-covered towns (civilized) and hills; U ports and lakes; B caves and swampy hovels...perhaps dark castles?; R mountain villages; G Taiga.
Also large lakes and oceans... there haven't been a lot of planes recently where oceans play a major role, but I think the geographic separation can be handy. And since some of the bodies of water would be frozen over, it wouldn't be all-Blue all the time... probably.
I'm noticing a distinct lack of penguins in this post....
I think the sea can have a major role by being the main source of food and sustenance for the plane. If we're going to have fairly harsh condition's there isn't going to be much wildlife to go around. Because of this I think the Vikings might be better off being Blue and being those ocean hunters/traders/warriors. This leaves the opportunity to have some very interesting sea creatures.
Dryads don't seem really that fit for this set. Maybe something more like trolls (though they might be also fit for GR, since they have strong connection with both nature and mountains...) or näkki (shapeshifting spirits) or hiisi (trickster spirits)?
EDIT: Also, dwarfs are good to go, but I maybe should remind you that Nordic dwarfs aren't the kind of live in mines or anything, but in people's homes. Most of them are benign, doing small favours like washing your dishes, keeping your house clean and so, while some are... not. (= Expect to wake up some morning upside down hanging from the roof or something.)
Also, I have nothing against griffins, but I've never heard of them in Nordic mythology... Oh well.
EDIT2: Also, elves DO exist in Nordic mythology. The thing is that pretty much EVERY one has a different opinion about them, like only female/both genders, only young/all ages, wings/no wings, pretty/ugly, malevolent/benign... The list goes on.
I'm not wild on the idea of gods or deities for it, mainly because Theros was the first set to introduce that concept (from a magic perspective) of gods and it just came out. However, I'm not sure I have any better ideas either...
There needs to be some sort of issue/item/situation that would entice planeswalkers to want to show up to the plane. Just throwing this out there... what about a rumor of an elder dragon that had survived the initial war where Bolas had triumphed and who everyone had thought was dead.
Doesn't necessarily mean it's a true rumor but I think that could entice quite a few different planeswalkers we already know (Tezzeret for example). I think it could also fit nicely for us because EDH...
Just a random thought you inspired, but could it be possible that on our plane there would be elder dragon(s)? Not original ones, of course, but as of "old dragons"?
There was also talk of having giants in each color, sort of how the Titans were done or having a giant tribe within each color?
I think it might be helpful to decide who will be doing the actual writing for this, whether it's one person or multiple people (I am not volunteering to write but am more than happy to edit). I think we have enough here to get a rough outline drafted and then we can hone in more specific details and questions/gaps.
I added in Konda's Banner and Banshee's Blade to test out. Am I missing other key cards or are there other good cards that would fit in well with this idea?
The only decks I've seen on here with Mikaeus, the Lunarch have been focused on token generation. I wanted to do a different take with him and instead focus on all things that buff each other. Whether that is giving counters, until end of turn buffs, or abilities.
I'm looking for some help in fleshing out the build. Here is the list I've built so far... I'm also looking for some generally good utility cards, that will help me control the board as much as I can.

Reason that this plane draws the interest of planeswalkers:
No idea yet, but I'm thinking we can do something with the greater beings.

Can someone with better knowledge of Norse folklore (not just myths) fill in some of the gaps?

It seems like we're fairly settled on the snow theme but if others really want to go a different direction we should discuss further.
So far for races on a snow based plane we have:
Humans: Civilized (white?) and Barbarians (red?)
Yetis: Civilized (blue?) and Savage (???)
Dwarves: Most likely delving too deep (red? what about black?)
Giants: Could go a few ways with this, maybe they are in all colors? Or colorless?
Penguins: This is happening, you can't stop it (white and black obviously)
Others thrown about:
Elves
Goblins
Few other ideas:
Ice Dragons?
Elementals?
Spirits?
I'm not seeing a clear one to hit the green slice yet. We need to make sure not to get too many races either, we're not going to be able to make something coalesce like Ravnica with all the guilds, especially on a snow plane where I'm assuming the conditions are harsh.

What do you guys think?

@TheIcyOne Very nice Sig! Do you play all the decks you have built regularly or is it more how you're feeling at the time?

I will veto any draft without penguins involved
I'm still interested in working on it, but it seems like everyone has been distracted with the Commander 2013 spoilers and excitement.
Was it ever decided who would actually write it?
