Honestly as a gay man it’s not just the queer baiting. It’s also Weisman’s deprived, elementary, and insulting lack of talent and tact that made everything about the novels a horrid disaster worthy of all nine Phyrexian circles. “Chandra was never into girls.”

    “Into”

    “Girls”

Ayyyyye you into girls? Ajani asked, grinning his leonin grin.

Ayyyyeee I’m into chicks when I’m in a phase and they hot” Chandra replied, grinning her intelligent primate with opposable thumbs grin.

It just added insult to injury, and had this tone that genuinely felt like the passages could belong to a homophobic parent talking their kid out of something that is “just a phase.” But with the worst, most insensitive, callous and deficient writing possible, as if intentionally sabotaging an emotional moment for his own amusement. I’m actually surprised he didn’t write flatulence into the scene to keep Seven year olds engaged. Oh, right, he already used that in the first words of the last book.

In the hands of a competent author, this creative decision to part Chandra and Nissa or even retcon could have been acceptable, welcomed even. Kelly Digges and Alison Lurhs managed to make even the hating hipsters actually admire Jace Beleren And many more to relate to him. In fact, their work is praised. What a decision like this required was valid reasoning, circumstance and emotional gravity. It’s an art. A monumental task required at least a capable author. Not the most rudimentary appendage conceivable. What did Wizards pay this guy with, cheeseburgers? I just couldn’t believe what I was reading. It felt like a seizure.

Someone on Amazon said it best. “It’s like the 8th season of Game of Thrones, but with horrible grammar.”

Whatever. Please bring back the creative te short stories or Jenna Helland or Kate Elliott for Theros and let’s please forget WAR.

“Arixmethes is just some obscure character that will never get a card”

    “No one knows about Callaphe”

“Quit complaining about no Theros novel and just do something about it”

I appreciate Jarvis and Maro addressing this issue that creating an uproar about (here and elsewhere) no doubt inspired. Ultimately, as long as there is a Theros story written by a competent author (of which MTG actually has many), that’s all that matters to me. Hopefully it will be released sooner than later.

The art looks good even if i m not sure what it is depicting XD

I'm not gonna lie...it looked like an ethereal anus having an epic bowel movement, but that's just me.

TBH I prefer the original artwork to this. To be even more honest I prefer the old artwork on the classic pre-8th frame.

In short: War of the Spark ****ed it up for everyone and they were spooked by it. Nice to see them admitting this and are going back to the latest tried-and-true approach.

This ought to be interesting moving forward.

It genuinely irks me that Greg Weisman and his incompetent trash compromised the Theros story release for us all. As if Vorthos didn’t suffer enough enduring what he did to the Bolas arc and all the characters and relationships creative worked so hard to establish. Let alone the insult to injury. I doubt this vetting process for Theros fiction was even warranted. This was a Greg weisman issue. Unless he was the author, they could have just released the Theros ebook. That said, I understand why they needed to take this approach. But if Kate Elliot and the Wildered Quest demonstrated anything, it’s that Greg was the problem, not consumer sensitivity, not the lore itself, but a horrible “author” who smashed the “novels” he “wrote” together the night before on dragon software with Junior high locker room banter in the background evidently.

I really hope it’s an ebook (like Godsend or like The Gathering Storm) or novel or at least the short stories on the Mothership site. A comic would be a bit lame since I really want details. It’s all good news though. Thank Thassa we will get something after all. Hopefully sooner than later. Do you suspect they have something already written that they’re evaluating for release?

    Mono black splash blue:
    3: woe strider
4: thassa - blink strider or blink that 2 drop creature that makes opponent discard a card
    5: double proc Gary
6: double proc the 6 drop chupacabra or proc Gary again

This card is a cheaper indestructible yarok with a much much much higher floor and lower ceiling.

This is one of the best cards of the set. Just an opinion but it's the 2nd best card of the set besides uro
I think Thassa is better than Uro actually. Time Will tell.

Thank Thassa. I am very pleased there will be a Theros story after all, albeit delayed. Hopefully it is sooner than later. I can’t tell though if there is already one written that is being evaluated, or if they’re just planning one for the future, with no actual material? Hopefully the former.

I'd appreciate any advice on when to pick up Serpent of Yawning Depths? It's almost $20... I hope that price won't hold. Ideally these being in collector's packs as well and being rather underwhelming cards outside of casual will make them more accessible. I was expecting them to be a dollar or two honestly.

I loved the gods having Homeric-like epithets in this visit. We have:

    Thassa, Deep-Dwelling
    Heliod, Sun-Crowned
    Purphoros, Bronze-Blooded
    Nylea, Keen-Eyed
    Erebos, Bleak-Hearted

    Kruphix, All-Seeing (love this one)
Mogis, Rage-Crowned (my least favorite, too similar to Heliod)
    Athreos, Veil-Shrouded

Wish we knew a few more Grin

Thassa and Tamiyo are among my favorite characters alongside Jace. I really like Kiora as well, mostly for her interest in sea creatures. Nissa's maturity and stoic demeanor are aspects I admire as well, which is what I like about Tamiyo.

Overall Thassa for my favorite female character. I enjoyed the Planeswalker's Guide to Theros descriptions of her as a pondering, insightful and objective sea goddess. Although Godsend and short stories depicted her as mostly wrathful, you'll notice in Drop For Drop that she was willing to toy with Kiora to bolster her devotion, and paused to understand more about other worlds (which bought Kiora time to flee), suggesting to me she is actually quite calculating when enraged, as opposed to the emotional nature of Red characters.

Vivien Reed is an interesting choice, mostly because she has no primary motivation anymore. Nicol Bolas been thoroughly defeated, her world is dead, which really leaves only two facets of her left. The eco-terrorist personality from short stories and also the Steve Irwin personality she has from various flavor texts.
Ideally, we'll see the latter, so I can at least attempt to feel anything but nausea when she's in a set. A land creature enthusiast (comparable to Kiora and sea beasts) was interesting, since Nissa is more about land, leylines and Worldsouls. Perhaps Ikoria will be a plane she's been familiar with and had used to amass a sizable army before. It could be where her magic works best, like Lilliana and Innistrad, etc.

    Eh.

It Does give me a “Dark Crystal” vibe in that all its creatures may be sci-fi/fantasy and not actually have earth counterparts.

I’m not really feeling Viven as the face of anything and the plane so far doesn’t look all that appealing. More information will help me decide but I’m traditionally a harsher critic of any set that follows Theros, so I’ll admit to that bias. I generally dislike leaving Theros for anything

I get a Dark Crystal vibe from it. As in, completely Sci-Fi/Fantasy creatures, no known Earth creatures.

Ideally a card game could just be a card game and not an “investment.” I never appreciated the hysteria, speculation and hoarding aspect of MTG.

Strange, I feel the same way - but with the inclusion of all the literary drama in my "list of things Magic doesn't need." Card games are meant to be played, and that's about it.
All I can see this accomplishing is delaying casuals from the cards we want over hypothetical nonsense for chump change margins. Between hysteria about the ”next big card” to invest in and the deficient reprint policy, I’ve observed the barrier to a casual format like commander become downright alienating. I’m not so sure this is very promising overall. I know I departed Yugioh over similar things.
