How the stores even had the physical product to make a mistake with in the first place is beyond me

They likely posted the three packs to display the different packaging art. There are four rares and a mythic shown. Of course they opened more than three packs.

Which announcement is being referenced here? I don’t recall Kiora being confirmed, although I would love that if true. Let’s hope it is!

Yes! It makes sense that The Theriad is The Iliad and The Odyssey is represented by The Callephia. I always took Callaphe to be the Jason trope, but she appears to be more Odysseus. I wonder if it’s the Thassa champion version of it told by Merfolk. Many myths speak of Callaphe stealing from gods and tossing their trinkets over the Waterfall at edge of the world, or sailing into Nyx, or dueling Thassa. Makes you wonder if Callaphe is many different people, but the true Callaphe herself was actually devoted to Thassa, since Thassa claimed she was when fighting Kiora, which conflicted with all the different myths about her from Godsend. I always thought it was propaganda for devotion, we’ll just have to see.

Yes, I really want a Callaphe card. And I hope we get some Arixmethes references on a saga depicting the sinking of the city, a land, flavor text or art.... or something.

And yes I do love Greek mythology and Greece! I’ll have to check that out. I absolutely adore Theros and from what I’m seeing here this is yet another slam dunk, even better than the original with sagas and more enchantment focus. Omen of the Sea alone will find itself in all my decks

Oooooh an Arixmethese Saga that like makes a land into an island on 1, bounces all creatures or maybe non-land permanents if they want to push it on 2, and then High Tides on 3 would be awesome and pretty thematic.
I was thinking the first chapter would tutor a kraken and put it on top of the library, second whelming waves and the third puts a kraken into play from hand a la Quest for Ula’s Temple. Would be so sick! The art could depict the city itself sinking

Going all the way back to page 1...who buys their MtG products at a Walgreen's? Just curious. I am certain some do but I would not have thought to look there for it.

When I lived in a small *****ty town in rural Georgia I bought from Walgreens. I got my only Masterpiece from a Walgreens Oath of the Gatewatch pack.

Also, Tiro, from those flavor texts I think the Callapheia is the Theros version of The Odyssey. Which is neat.

Pegasus and Medusa (well, not in MTG, but in many other media) welcome Typhon to the club.

There's a difference, I think. For one both of those have been made generic by culture for years. Secondly there are myths where Medusa isn't the only gorgon. Typhon, however is a different matter. It's not something that culture has made generic. It's not even something a lot of people would know about off hand. Typhon is a cataclysmic creature, father to monsters. To make Typhon into a kind of creature rather than a specific one is an odd choice. Notably I'm not complaining. Just an observation.
I noticed that and felt the same as well. To be fair, Triton was Poseidon’s son and instead of being a legendary creature it’s the name of the Theros race of Merfolk. Still, I’d prefer if it were a legendary hydra or dragon, instead.

Escape looks really good in limited; at least from looking at the two cards shown. The Spider does a LOT. An Escape deck, however, requires cards in the graveyard, so if that's easy to do then maybe we can start talking.

Also excited to see some Krakens. Wish we could have had a new Kraken spoiled.

I absolutely agree. Here’s to hoping there’s some sea monster support. Last visit to Theros gave us whelming wave and many new ocean critters

Theros, Zendikar and this. 2020 pulled out all the stops, and I couldn’t be happier with literally everything they’re doing

I hope Theros has a novel release as well, especially if it’s written by Either Kate Elliott, Jenna Heland again (please yes) or Kelly Digges (come on already just throw the guy a bone, he was among your best authors).

idk about you guys but Sagas make this set feel more like Theros than the original Theros did haha I just love it!

I was fine with return to Zendikar. But they really need to stop these repeat sets. I'm probably going to like it but ugh..... Sure, Ravnica 4 coming soon!
I love return sets. I hope this one has the enemy cycle of the BFZ tango lands. I really want a simic ocean themed one.

I think the Rome aspect is intended to be more about emperors, government, having a republic defended by gladiators and so on, and less about gods, mythology and tropes. I still would have had “Rome” just be a different part of Theros that the main Polis conflict with at times, just as Troy should have been it’s own city in Theros and not Akros, which was intended to be Sparta. Theros should have been “Mediterranean World” with a main focus on it being Greece as the core landmass, and various cities and locations from Greek mythology From the region included. With those cities worshipping the same pantheon, but having other names for the same gods (in lore only. Like Magendi and Ula for example)

How awesome would it be if we visited “Rome world” for example only to discover it was a distant part of Theros? It would be so unique to do that. Perhaps too complex for marketing purposes, but still cool

Wasn't her mask made by pieces of Godsend? I believe that I read something like that.
It was a part of the extended Theros Block trailer, which showed thee hilt/guard of the Godsend made into a mask (Elspeth wasn't in the shot, but it was in the underworld). The design has changed but that's magic art for you.

We didn't get a white aligned Planeswalker in Eldraine. I think we will see a Green/white Ajani and a White Elspeth in Theros.
While we no longer have blocks (based on singular planes over multiple sets) the color balance within any given year of standard still requires variety in walker colors. And the walker count per-standard (barring Starter decks) hasn't changed.

Post-rotation White is at the lowest count of walkers (including Eldraine having nothing to add here), with blue&black having the most (thanks Tezzy), and red+green also being at a slight low. Really easy for them to just give us another Selesnya Cat and Monowhite Elspeth and balance things a bit better.
I’m content with that. As much as I’d love to see Jace on Theros, it’s Ajani and Elspeth’s time to shine.
