The Limited Archetypes of Dominaria

I will have to see tomorrow at the prerelease, but I expected glossy, not matte.

I disagree, I love how rich and saturated modern foils are. M25 foils are some of the best looking foils. Despite the set being trash.

Is it just me, Or are the Dominaria basic lands the most gorgeous since Theros?

Monowhite Serra alone makes any product look good. I want Rebecca Guay commissioned for the art, or else.

Venser as a UW Commander would be a dream for us who love him and are saddened he will not get any new cards outside of such products. This is the perfect time for him to get a card.

Kiora with a Sea Monster EDH deck would be amazing. Arixmethes time. And Thassa reprint.

It would be nice to have at least the face cards of this set by now.

Someone might wonder "why" they do that anyway.

EU cards are totally fine, the only thing they NEEDED to do was to use the same machines in the US.

The only terrifically bad card quality is from the US printers.
I think the Japanese printers are a step above the EU ones, but I concur the US printers are the absolute worst. I had to buy all the old MTG cards that didn't come in supplemental products (which use the Japanese printer style) in Japanese just to have them not have awful card quality.

This broke my heart most with Theros and Magic Origins. I'll never get a good quality Jace, Vryn's Prodigy, Ampryn Tactician (one of my favorite artworks), Plea For Guidance, Thassa or God-Favored General unless I go Japanese with them, which we can't read.

Japanese card quality is superior. I have a Japanese Thassa that has this glossy, sturdy coating which makes the artwork look vibrant. The coloring on the card is beautiful. My English Thassa is dull, flimsy, and cheap. I've always been disappointed with how English cards have this thin, dry, cheap feel and lack that sturdy gloss that Japanese cards and some supplemental products have. I have noticed though that this quality for English cards has been improved.

Just had to say I love this deck and love your reason for building it. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you, I appreciate that! This post made me smile. I noticed I need to cut two cards in order to add Sosuke's Summons and Choice of Damnations. One references Sosuke and the other, Toshiro. Otherwise, I just hope we get the remaining Kamigawa characters, especially Choryu.

In the most recent story, Ajani departed to gather more allies. Whether this involves Elspeth, or he put her on the back burner to handle Bolas first, I cannot say. Not sure how she would be able to assist. Rescuing her seems a lot more complicated than just gathering other allies. Besides, I feel like they'd use Gideon as the road back to Theros before Elspeth or Ajani. I wonder if Heliod has a Blackblade headed his way. Not that he deserves it (IMO).

Oh, Heliod definitely deserves it. He's the true villain of Theros block. And the fun part, I am fairly certain that Erebos and Kruphix would assist, as they seem to be the two most decent gods of Theros. Ok, Karametra and Ephara are pretty chill as well. Heliod wants what's in the best interest of Theros. Also, why did Elspeth promise to exchange her life for Daxos?

But as much as I like Theros, I think it is to early to tell if the next non-core set is a return or not.
Heliod isn't a villain at all. Before Elspeth enters Nyx, Thassa has her Bident stolen by a Planeswalker. Xenagos is one too, causing all sorts of turmoil. And who does Heliod learn that Elspeth is a Planeswalker from, and what a Planeswalker actually is, from? Phenax. I can only imagine what kind of skew that information had.

Heliod has a long history of screwing over his champions because they start to become more popular than him, or he sees them as a threat. He sent Kytheon Iora after a titan of erebos for the sole purpose of screwing him over. Kytheon kills the titan with the weapon given, sees Erebos proper and throws the weapon at him. Erebos swats it aside without even looking, and sends it right back to where it came from, killing Kytheon's friends and causing Gideon to spark. Then later on, he "recruits" Elspeth to become his champion and gives her the godslayer weapon to deal with Xenagos, when she succeeds in killing the Satyr god/planeswalker, he slays her shortly afterwards because she's started to become more popular than him. He is a bigger ass than friggin' Zeus was in Greek mythology, and Zeus was a serial rapist. Heliod was the true villain of Theros block. There is no bones about it.

And while we are at it: Liliana Vess is a villain protagonist who murdered half of Thraben, and Urza was as big of a villain as Yawgmoth who knowingly let Tevesh Szat murder Daria so he could have an excuse to kill the demonic planeswalker to power up the powerstone bombs, and then straight up murdered Taysir when called out on his bull*****. Frigg, Urza even joined the Phyrexians in the end. Heck, he blew up an entire continent just to win a dick measuring contest with his own brother.

How is Gideon's hubris Heliod's fault?

Well there's also that thing about Heliod declaring himself "The greatest of these" when that probably isn't true, and fighting with Purphoros, neither of which was caused by planeswalker activity.

Also, you mention Kiora, but even Thassa didn't want Elspeth and Ajani on a pike. IIRC, Nylea even warned Elspeth and Ajani to get out of dodge before Heliod showed up. Heliod is a ****, and everyone who didn't worship him knew it.
Heliod is arrogant, selfish and petty, but I don't think he's an outright villain beyond being extreme white philosophy. You can argue he's similar to Konda, although Heliod's actions weren't responsible for the suffering of the entire plane. I don't think his actions warrant him dying. Most people think oh, he killed Elspeth, so he should die. But there's more to it than that.

My Tragic Poet reprint has arrived at long last! It's bittersweet to see it though - I always felt this card was a solid fit for Theros, where it almost made it, but lost out to the numbers. I was hoping that's where we would see it again (hopefully this doesn't rule it out there as well) but it is naturally appropriate we see Tragic Poet here as well. While I admire the new art and flavor text, which are wonderful indeed - the original Quinton Hoover art, and its original flavor text will always be my favorite. I'd have loved to see the original card simply reprinted in the new frame as it was. That said, the new Tragic Poet is a really great compromise and believe it or not, I am the most excited to have this card.

I love the artwork for Dub as well.

I was so excited for Diligent Excavator, only to discover she's a stupid mill card. Just stop doing that. Make her recover something from grave or something. They're wasting all these cool archaeology tropes on mill, and it really irritates me.

Relic Runner looks straight out of Innistrad lol

Vodalian Arcanist - that art. I think the card itself has potential. Not quite a Sea Scryer, but good enough.

The basic lands are all gorgeous. Wow. I love when they add some detail to Basics, like structures, some ruins, how there's Tolaria in one of them, etc.
