After the backlash of The WAR I’m actually stunned they proceeded with this one instead of continuing to Eldraine. I’m not sure if Eldraine has enough material since it’s our first visit to a new plane, but definitely Theros on a second visit especially considering the first was three sets. Really looking forward to Theros

It’s going to be Dark Crystal plane with creatures that have no true earth counterpart IMO

I also think $40 is too expensive for these. Justifying the price with foil prices of these cards is not appropriate. Foils of the original gods command that price because of scarcity. Their sets are no longer in print, and it was challenging to pull a foil mythic from draft boosters before collector’s packs. It’s not the same as a print-to-demand set selling three singles at a comparable rate to the secondary market that WOtC is evidently unable to acknowledge.

I understand that having paid that rate for these, one could argue they’re worth what I was willing to pay for them. It was the pressure of these being exclusive and limited that really drove that decision, though. I was thinking about the future, not the present.

These aren’t RL though. So it’s possible they could show up elsewhere regardless.

For the record, I actually prefer the original set for all the gods, original Theros and Theros beyond death. I just bought these in the event I get that collector’s itch someday and regret doing it when they were still attainable. There will never be a Thassa art I love more than Zack Stella’s for THB and I love the vibrant colors of Jason Chan’s as well

Okay, Flamebuster sent me his original post and here is my response to it, in case someone followed that subelement of this discussion:

Me, in response to 'buster's original post, which referred to MTGS user Tiro of Meletis:
"Haha! I believe he might have gotten a good laugh out of it. I guess I kinda get what the moderators were concerned with here, though, so yeah. Still a funny comment in my view."

His post, in my view, was on topic and a funny reference to a well known member of this community.

Someone mentioned me? I didn’t see anything. Now I’m curious what it was lol

The best selling ones will be ones like Eldraine Wonderland. As they are going to be the equivalent of the Guru lands in terms of expensive basic lands. Lands in general sell better than anything else because everyone needs them. Old school duals used to cost something like $4-20 now they are worth close to a thousand dollars.

Unless its a secret lair with lands, it has at best a questionable market unless its artwork centric, like cats.

    Laugh
These are artwork centric, are they not?

    Theros or bust

Wait, this one is Theros? Well don’t mind me while I be the one to bust all over this then.

AND THE BEST PART OF IT Allllllllll is Thassa, Ephara and Kruphixxxxxxx my three favorite gods all come together! But most importantly, most significant, above all else, is my darling precious dear Thassa having constellation frames for both her cards! Do I prefer the originals for all the gods? Yes. Does it matter? No because I want every version of all of them period. These are the best characters in MtG next to Jace for me and rulers of my favorite plane and they will all be had

I will protect them like my children from the horrors of this world and no one will come for my babesh

I feel that distinct pleasure of getting exactly what I wanted which is my fondest emotion in this damn world, and Theros gets me there every time my friends

honestly this game needs more Thassa cards. It’s still not enough, but I shall enjoy the salty and sweet sauce of Thassa in a cosmic bikini and nothing shall prevent me from celebrating!!! AND HERE I THOUGHT MY THEROS FUN ENDED WITH THB BUT HERE WE ARE FOLKS!!!!! Grin Grin Grin

It’s not necessary to have. Secret Lair benefits those who want it and is neutral for those who do not. Just as Un-sets are. The only issue I see here is more announcing of announcements, not revealing the content ahead of time, and there simply being a lot going on at once. None of which warrant pages of ranting.

I’ll agree the price point and lack of prior information to promote impulse decisions is in poor taste. I understand it fosters hype but it’s not the most genuine marketing.

Just ignore what you don’t want. I think the issue is the ability to demonstrate restraint. I only buy products that appeal to me, usually Theros themed or on a plane I admire such as zendikar. If something doesn’t have cards I desire for commander, I avoid it. It’s why I have yet to buy a secret lair.
If these aren’t Theros themed, I won’t be obtaining them either. If they are, it’s a first.

This is my take on these upcoming drops - 5 Drops = one for each color. "Look to the Stars" slogan - *Original* Theros's Gods in Constellation Frames + Signature spells
I hope it has signature spells for the mono color gods as well. But which would they include? I’m sure the original god weapons are a given. I’d love classic and thematic spells with alternate art depicting the gods casting them. Like the intervention cycle, except with other cards like a Counterspell with Thassa art

So what should wotc do with secret lair? Make them a FTV series that scalps everyone and can be either over or under printed? Only to benefit parasitic “investors”?

While I find the constant products annoying, it’s not so bad. Those who want the secret lairs get them, and those who do not will not. I don’t feel like I missed out on anything b my skipping the others because I could care less about their contents or collecting those cards. If this one has Theros gods, it’ll be the first I care for. If not, Ill skip it. I think too many players have this mentality of needing to have every exclusive product just in case it becomes an investment in the future. How about players just pursue what actually interests them and let go of that hoarding mentality?
