GP Richmond was the largest constructed GP of all-time and it was Modern. Those weren't speculators, those were tournament players. This isn't a speculation run )although those people are in on this), the spike is from players and the rise of Commander.
Snapcasters are steadily rising on Ebay. Playsets are seeing buys at $34-36 per card! These will probably steadily climb toward 70-80 over the next 6 months.
Why should we have to breath in these noxious vapors from "outhouse guy"? Makes no sense. I'm withing my rights to say he's trying to create an unfair advantage by making me sick to my stomach and giving me a headache from his stink.
Do you know what's cheaper than registering for a playmat? Offering to buy a playmat off someone else for less at the event. Surplus playmats are divided up and given to vendors to sell on. Players who don't want the playmats sell them to the vendors also. Also if it's sealed gp your going to end up paying far too much for a playmat that might have terrible art.
I think it's against the rules for us to buy playmats from non-vendors. I have no idea how much they might charge. There is also a good promo card for him (batterskull), the playmat is amazing (GP Beijing check it out).
Is it just me or... Everything seems inflated / most of the cards have had their spike already, at this point in time? I'm looking for proper «gainers» or investment target in modern right now, and beside a couple of cards (namely Snapcaster mage (mid-term) and Abrupt decay (short to mid-term)), nothing seems to have still a long way to go before reaching it's price ceiling. Sure there's the fetches, but they're reprinted (and I am actually looking for targets to trade my fetches for). Or are we just entering a new era in modern where good cards start at 20$ and cap at a 100$, double what it was one year back, and that's why my mind just can't conceive anything going further up?
Besides, what do you guys think of Tezzeret, agent of bolas? This is something I might put my money (fetches) on. So versatile. Starts to see competitive play in UBx control shells, backed by Ensnaring bridges. I know the build is solide, just needs a bit more fizzling. Then the results might come in. It also has already climbed from 8-10$ tp 20$ (SCG) in the last 6 months or so.
It's not easy to speculate. You have to take chances. Some of the cards will be junk until a new card is printed that makes the old one better, than it's too late to buy it. You can diversify by having several playsets of all junk rares (especially mythics) that seem to be just not quite there. That would make you more likely to hit.
So do you think it would be fine for me to submit the registration form on Friday evening, pay the money, drop at a time that doesn't affect the tournament and let my friend have the play mat he's always dreamed of obtaining?
Contact the Tournament Organizer of the event ahead of time and ask them directly if you can work something out.
At GP Vancouver, there were surplus playmats at the end of Day 2. Granted, many players didn't care for the giant slug artwork.
There are no tournament or game rules that govern freebies given away by the organizers.
There may be requirements imposed by the Wizards Play Network or the organizers may have there own rules, but you can get your answer by contacting the organizer directly.
Great advise! I want to be clear about rules though. Would this be potentially breaking any rules that the DCI cares about?
Mind you from a TO perspective, one would think they wouldn't mind accepting $30+ in exchange for a playmat...
Easy money. "It costs me under $5 and they want it for $30...Ok I'll take your money."

One of the players responsiblities is to be physically present at the tournament. So if you do regester your friend online and they don't show up they are not entitled to the playmat, nor will they receive any PW points for the event. They will be dropped before the tournament begins.
No, I mean I can just fill out his registration sheet and hand them the cash, then they hand me the playmat and the promo, right? At GPs you usually just wait in line, hand in the paper and they hand you your goodies. The walker points are irrelevant, my friend really wants the playmat and unfortunately can't make the event.
Is there anything really wrong with this? It doesn't disrupt anything.
What do you mean "once again"? RW Burn hasn't been much of a player. A ton of people are bringing it to GPs, decks are ignoring it and it's doing decent but not fantastic.
Also layers have to have a REAL doctor's permission to be smelly. I can already see that the first thing everyone will do is say they are smelly because of a medical reason.
Ok, This may be somewhere else, but I have been unable to find it thus far...I am a fan of janky drafts, and one I have been looking into proxying would be making box worth of Beta, Antiquities, and Arabian Nights boosters...Now for the sake of my OCD, I was looking into <printing out a few sheets of proxies> as close as I could to how they would have been printed back then. Basically I am just looking for layouts of which cards were on which sheets, and the quantities per sheet.
From what I've been able to find online, Beta has a few examples to work with and that is no problem...Arabian Nights and Antiquities is another story...I know they are on an 11x11 grid (please correct me if I am wrong) but when it comes to C1, C2, U1, U2, etc. I am lost.
Does anyone have any reference material that could help out? Or should I just go through the set list and basically just jumble quantities to my own hearts desire?

Why is it illegal for him to make proxies for private drafting? Don't people make proxies all the time?
Is it technically against the rules to sign up (a willing friend) that wont attend a GP, pay and then get the playmat? Could this be considered some kind of violation? What if you drop him before the tournament starts so as not to harm pairings? Does anyone care about this? Seems like it shouldn't matter but I'd like to know.

But I understand the reasoning now.
