Can I evoke a shriekmaw through an aether vial? similarly does a card like heartless summoning affect the cost of an evoked creature?

    say Nodding the Affirmative

No. The evoke cost is an alternative cost to cast the creature; and it doesn't change the card's converted mana cost (Shriekmaw's CMC is always 5).
Aether Vial puts the creature directly on the battlefield, so you can't choose to use any alternative casting cost; and looks at the creature's card actual CMC (so you need a Vial with 5 counters to drop Shriekmaw).

Heartless Summoning do affect alternative costs to cast a creature spell, so with it, if you evoke Shriekmaw it will cost just B

  • posted a message on Stealing a creature with Ordeal of Thassa/Thassa's Emissary
    Quote from Hawk7915
Here's the situation. Player A controls a Auramancer enchanted with Ordeal of Thassa and Thassa's Emissary with two +1/+1 counters on it. Player B casts Act of Treason, stealing the Auramancer and attacking. Ordeal triggers, putting a third counter on the Auramancer and getting sacrificed.

The main thing to realize is, Player B controls the Auramancer, Player A still controls the auras attached to it.

    - Q1: Does player A or player B draw the cards from Ordeal of Thassa?

Player A controls the Ordeal, so Player A sacrifices it and draws the cards.

The Auramancer connects, triggering Thassa's Emissary.

    - Q2: Does player A or player B draw this card?

Player A controls the Emissary, so Player A draws the card.

In their second main phase, player B sacrifices the stolen Auramancer to a Bubbling Cauldron.

    - Q3: Does player A or player B get the Thassa's Emissary as a creature?

Player A never stops controlling the Emissary during all this time, from when it was an aura to after it changes into a creature.

Yes, it will only trigger if the creature is on the battlefield.

You can't cast enchantment spells without flash unless the stack is empty (the same for creatures, sorceries, etc). So none of your scenarios can be done as you wrote them.

    You must do:
Cast (put on the stack) either Viper's Kiss OR Quag Sickness targeting Erebos. Let it resolve.
Only then, cast the other aura on Erebos, and let that one resolve. This will kill Erebos.

Now, you may cast Congregate and gain life from it when it resolves.

    Cast through Time.
    Quote from Dilithium
There is no interaction between rebound and suspend. Rebound only applies to spells cast from your hand, while a suspended card is cast from exile.

    This was my understanding.

Correct. Suspending from hand is not casting; and casting after the last time counter is removed is casting from exile; so CTT's Rebound won't trigger for the suspended spell.

Are you talking about the spell Rebound targeting a spell with Suspend, or about giving the ability rebound to a spell with suspend with Cast Through Time, or about giving the ability suspend to a spell with rebound with Jhoira of the Ghitu?

The judge is incorrect. The bestow creature is an Enchantment Creature on the stack (and later on the battlefield) if cast for its normal cost. It can be annuled just fine.

  • posted a message on Life link and sanguine bond to win?
All combat damage is dealt at once (if no creature has first/double strike). Lifelink applies at the same time damage is dealt, but Sanguine Bond's ability is triggered, going to the stack only after the lifegain happens.

So, simultaneously, the blocked creature deals damage to the blocker, the blocker deals damage to the blocked, the player gains 2 life, and the unblocked attackers deal damage to the player. He's at 10 life, gains 2 and takes 12 or 13 (it's not clear in your post), losing the game at 0 or -1 life way before his Bond's ability can resolve.

    Quote from Illusionist
In that case could you reanimate with the whip and then flicker any creature?

Yes. From Theros's Release Notes (a.k.a. "Theros FAQ"):

If a creature returned to the battlefield with Whip of Erebos would leave the battlefield for any reason, it's exiled instead. However, if that creature is already being exiled, then the replacement effect won't apply. If the spell or ability that exiles it later returns it to the battlefield (as Chained to the Rocks might, for example), the creature card will return to the battlefield as a new object with no relation to its previous existence. The effects from Whip of Erebos will no longer apply to it.

  • posted a message on another Heroic question
In general, instants and sorceries only target when they use the word "target". Aura spells always target (it's part of their rules). Activated and triggered ability also need to have the word "target", unless they are keywords (like Equip or Modular - and those have 'target' on their reminder text, when present).

Simply being 'affected' by a spell doesn't mean being targeted by it.

    Quote from EmptyUrns
Hey there one more Heroic question for you. So say I have three Battlewise Hoplite's on the battlefield and then cast an Azorius Charm giving them lifelink. Would that trigger the Heroic ability for all of them even though the text on the charm doesn't contain the word 'target'? Thanks.

Azorius Charm's first mode (all your creatures gain lifelink) has no targets, so it doesn't cause the Hoplite's Heroic ability to trigger.

  • posted a message on Pact of Negation self targeting.
    Quote from Illusionist
Can you cast Pact of Negation countering itself? Or are you unable because you need a legal target before you can cast a targeting spell, and Pact of Negation isn't a spell until you cast it.

It is already a spell (to cast a spell, first you put the card on the stack, then choose targets, and later pay the cost).

But spells can never target themselves, because a rule specifically says so.

  • posted a message on New god cards Question?
Look at what it is written on the card's typeline, on its up-side or front-side if there's more than one. Does it say 'legendary' and 'creature' on that line? Then it can be used as a commander.

  • posted a message on Tormod's crypt
It varies. The "recycling after milled" card has a triggered ability like Emrakul, the Aeons Torn (it starts with "when {cardname} is put into a graveyard..."), or a replacement effect (it says "If {cardname} would be put into a graveyard, .... instead.") like Blightsteel Colossus?

If the card has a trigger, you can use Tormod's Crypt in response to the trigger because it uses the stack. If the card has a replacement, you can't use Tormod's against it.

  • posted a message on Defend the Hearth
It may indirectly prevent damage. For example if your opponent casts Lightning Strike targeting you and chooses to redirect the damage to your planeswalker, Defend the Hearth can prevent it.

But damage done directly to the planeswalkers (creatures attacking it, Magmaquake) won't be prevent.

    Failed to read the card.
