we used to do the "fun points" system. of course they didnt call it that. everyone had 2 points to give out at the end of each game. one to the person who knocked them out, and one to the person who made the best play in the game. of course the players bent the rules on that second one so they never gave the point to the player who made the best play, I.E the winning play, or countering a spell that would have won the other player the game. they gave it to a different person just to spite the player who combo'd and won.
I'ts not really a league, the store has a commander competition every sunday, playing for prizes. last week a few people got angry because i won with lab maniac and complained to the TO. its treated very casually, but we are playing for prizes
We havn't had any rules until now, and they are (quoting their facebook post) "FYI - The three new shop rules for Commander will start this Sunday.
1)No mass land destruction (single target destruction is ok)
2)No infinite combos
3)No win conditions without interacting with other players (such as Biovisionary or Laboratory Maniac)
*These rules have been added to keep games within the "spirit" of Commander, which is a casual format that should be fun for all players."
I don't want a super competitive cutthroat environment. i like my LGS, but when your playing for prizes, i want to play a deck that can win consistently. and if some of the players don't like infinite combos, there are cards that can stop those combos, like curse of exhaustion, rhystic library, strangle hold, and uncounterable spells. activating a Boseiju to use a kill spell on my azami, or to tooth and nail is really good against my deck. or using cavern of souls to make their Uril, the miststalker uncounterable. All I'm saying is that there are ways to beat and disrupt combos and alternate win conditions. maybe people should include some cards to deal with these kind of decks instead of just saying that combos and alternate win conditions are banned.
As stated above, my LGS has banned infinite combos and alternate win cons, in effort to uphold the spirit of commander. We have a very casual meta at my LGS, so when someone uses tide-spout tyrant in their animar deck to bounce everyone's permanents, they tend to rage a little bit. I once had one guy yell at me because I ran to many counterspells in my esper control list. Anyways, on the the point of this whole thing.
For the past week I have been building an Azami, Lady of scrolls list. If anyone has played Azami before, you will know the easiest and most consistent way to win in the deck is combos and drawing out your deck and winning with laboratory maniac. Since both those aspects of the deck are banned, should I just build a new deck? Or submit a complaint to the TO and explain to him that these new rules make it so some commanders are impossible to play well at the stores commander tournaments. ( there is prize support for these tournaments to, so they are basically saying you cant play a competitive deck.) sorry for raging, I am a bit angry.
things like that seem to happen in any multiplayer format my shop hosts tournaments for. for example, we were playing conspiracy, and i had won one of the three games going on. so round 2 the newer mono white player who i had beaten last round kept targeting me, because i had beat him the round before. i tried to explain to him that i had no way to win anymore. my reya, realm seekers, and pellaka wurms had all been killed. i was clearly less of a threat than the guy who had 2 deathreap rituals, a terrastadon, and phage on board. but no.. because i won last round
sadistic hypnotist doesn't say "discard a creature card" it says " sacrifice a creature" i guess if you have a reito lantern effect you can keep making players discard cards if the creature is cheap enough
someone did this at my shop, except they had three of the conspiracy that put +1 +1 counters on the dude you named, and a secrets of paradise, so turn 1 he had 2 4/4 blockers that could generate mana. the TO ruled it legal, which i thought was weird, but now i know better.
I never understood people who spent a ton of money on online card games like MTGO, or Hearthstone. the cards you get are not physical objects. the real money you spend on the packs can not possibly be returned, as you dont get real money when you sell the cards, you get tickets so you can do more drafts, or buy more cards. i would much rather have a physical card to hold in my hand, and if i had no use for it, i could sell it for a few bucks to my LGS
I used to play telepathy, but soon took it out. if I turn 1nd telepathy, or even turn 2 or turn 3, everyone sent all of their hate my way, which i did not want to do. yes its a good card, but people will hate you for playing it
My friend played a deck very similar to this for a while. the thing i dont like about it is it has essentially no synergy, just good removal spells and good creatures. it is a pretty good deck, but if you look at the top decks in the format, they all have synergy. mono blue is basically all synergy, same with mono black. junk midrange has a lot of synergy as well. UW X control has some synergys as well. the only synergies i see in this deck are the obzedats+ whip of erebos.

He forces your opponents to discard randomly, and is a discard outlet for yourself, so re animator shenanigans can ensue
but we did just have battalion a block ago. im thnking maybe battelcry, horsemanship, or flanking
