I'm bugged that they went with Warlock over Witch. I read that many real life male witches consider "warlock" a derogatory term. At any rate, Warlock is now black's primary mage creature type, creating a cycle of Cleric, Wizard, Warlock, Shaman, and Druid.
The problem with making "bounce a land" the only additional cost is that the spell can only be so much stronger then, especially if it means you also get to use landfall triggers more often. The reason Jump-start works is because you still have to pay mana in addition to discarding the card, as you're getting a second use out of the spell. By adding a mana cost to Roil, there's more choice involved, and more room for variance in the enhanced version of the spell.
Besides, it wouldn't be the first time Zendikar introduced a tweak on Kicker.
Roil is an additional cost keyword designed primarily for instants and sorceries in a future Zendikar set. While casting a spell with Roil, you may pay all additional costs specified by the Roil keyword and return a land you control to its owner's hand. If you do, the spell's effect will be enhanced in some way.
Roil Wave2UU
Sorcery
Roil 1U(While casting this spell, you may pay an additional 1U and return a land you control to its owner's hand.)
Return all creatures with power 3 or less to their owners' hands. If this spell's roil cost was paid, instead put all creatures with power 3 or less on top of their owners' libraries.
Geyser Flame1R
Sorcery
Roil 1R(While casting this spell, you may pay an additional 1R and return a land you control to its owner's hand.)
~ deals 3 damage to any target. If this spell's roil cost was paid, it deals 5 damage to that target instead.
Artifacts, creatures, and enchantments can also have Roil costs, though these are fewer in number since Landfall already provides permanents with a distinct mechanic. If any creature cards do have Roil, they're most likely Elementals due to Elementals being closely tied to land and spells flavorwise. Roil is focused primarily in blue and red.
If we're going back to these places I wonder if we'll see things like Heroic and devotion for Theros; I'd guess we'll see a landfall variant if not landfall itself for Zendikar, provided the storyline and setting call for it. I'd like to see more Heroic and devotion.
'buster
Hear, hear. Aside from the usual +1/+1 counters, there's a lot they can do with Heroic, like more wide effects in the fashion of Phalanx Leader and Anax and Cymede. Heroic is easy to build around, as most sets have combat tricks and Auras with which to target your creatures. That said, if they wanted Heroes to have an "enchanted or equipped" theme this time, I wouldn't complain either as I love Equipment, and it's an excuse to bring back Bestow or introduce a similar mechanic, not to mention encourage putting more colored artifacts in the set to help with the Devotion theme. Since it's just one set this time, they can also bring back Constellation. I expect Sagas could return at uncommon and higher. I'd also love to see a greater focus on legendary cards, now that Dominaria showed us how to do it right.
I think fans fully expect Landfall itself to return in Zendikar, along with Allies. Since the Eldrazi aren't mucking everything up this time, they can go back to the more adventuresome feel of the original Zendikar and Worldwake. I could see a new spell mechanic called Roil that has you bounce a permanent you control as part of the cost, which would play splendidly with Landfall and Allies, not to mention Constellation if it should happen to return in Theros.
After the whole errata to get rid of the Lord creature type, it's dumb that they're bringing in Noble.
Why is that? Based on the official multi-layered reasoning to get rid of the "lord" creature type, of course (which you can find here, under July 17, 2007. ). Why is "noble" dumb when it follows none of the multiple reasons "lord" was removed to begin with?
I would have liked for the different gendered types of royalty to get their own subtypes, considering they still use terms like "King" and "Queen" in card names, but I expected that they'd go the gender-neutral route. Only, instead of Royal we got Noble, which is technically an incorrect term for royalty as nobility is a class below royalty in the traditional peerage hierarchy, but it conveys the concept of "high born" well enough, I suppose.
First off, the visuals are absolutely beautiful. The gingerbread cookies look like they came right out of a Pixar film, complete with love song. I'm astonished at how well they're animated. And suddenly Garruk storms the castle and gets in a fight with the guards, and the poor cookies are looking for a place to hide or maybe escape. They find themselved trapped between a pot full of boiling orange fluid and a milk jar that shatters, leaving them dangling precariously over the edge. Garruk's axe comes down, separating the two cookies, and the female falls into the pot, seemingly dead. Garruk grabs the male cookie and bites his head off. Yes, Garruk is seriously eating a gingerbread cookie in a MtG trailer. Even the big bad huntsman loves him some home-baked sweets. Then we see that the female cookie survived...and she is MAD. She grabs a fork and leaps at Garruk, intent on putting an eye out. Yes, Garruk seriously has a cartoony gingerbread woman out for his blood because he ate her boyfriend.
I don't even know what to say to all this. It's so well animated and deranged and sad and hilarious and...WHAT THE FUNKY MONKEY DID I JUST WATCH? |8D
Just saw the set trailer, which features Garruk. Um...wow.

In Monster World, maybe you have Creature Parts that can be combined together? I bet Kiora is returning then to play with the big sea monsters that will inevitably exist on that world.
