I played through all of the Hero Kids adventures with my kids. They had a lot of fun. They were between 3 and 8 years old at the time. Now they are playing 5E with me.
I leave out Sphinx of the Steel Wind because the tri-color nature of the card makes it so it would rarely be hard cast and thus goes in fewer decks. Dragonlord Atarka is kind of in the same boat. It was either Inkwell Leviathan or Palinchron due to size constraints and I have thought that the potential to generate infinite mana with something like Tolarian Academy. Also Inkwell protects itself without investment while Palinchron needs mana. As far as tinker targets go, there are still 5 good targets (more if you aren't as picky). In a small cube I am hoping that is enough.
@THUNDERWANG - The bigger the cube, the less often the archetypes come together, right? I mean if you are only drafting half the cube, half the cards you need for an archetype are statistically sitting on the sideline.
Your reply has sparked my interest in providing additional details. I run a 360 cube, and do try to support reanimator as an archetype. It may be that I am trying to cram to 10 lbs into a 5 lbs bag.
For reanimator I include the following reanimation spells/creatures:
Reanimate
Exhume
Living Death
Animate Dead
Necromancy
Recurring Nightmare
Nezumi Graverobber
Karmic Guide
Reveillark
The following discard outlets:
Dack Fayden
Kolaghan's Command
Psychatog
Survival of the Fittest
Wheel of Fortune
Faithless Looting
Firestorm
Mind Twist
Smallpox
Thoughtseize
Liliana of the Veil
Pack Rat
Fact or Fiction
Frantic Search
Jace, Vryn's Prodigy
And the following popular reanimation targets (although others will do as well)
Baneslayer Angel
Sun Titan
Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite
Consecrated Sphinx
Palinchron
Grave Titan
Griselbrand
Crater Hellion
Inferno Titan
Greater Gargadon
Primeval Titan
Hornet Queen
Terastodon
Woodfall Primus
Steel Hellkite
Wurmcoil Engine
Myr Battlesphere
Sundering Titan
Of course the monsters are fought over by other archetypes that I am trying to support, ramp, tinker, sneak attack/show and tell. I am trying to keep all of the monsters as castable as possible, but a couple (Griselbrand) are on the edge of that now.
In black specifically I am trying to also support aggro, pox (Braids/Smokestacks), a decent amount of discard, and a few tutors. Black also has great sweepers and spot removal, so those need a spot too.
One thing I have really noticed since I started lurking here several years ago is that the number of people running small cubes (~360) has really decreased. I think this may have to do with the quality of the cardpool more than any other factor. I can't imagine that peoples drafting groups of grown so much that a 720 card cube is needed.
I don't get the opportunity to cube very often at all. In fact I haven't drafted my cube since July (well, cubetutor). This makes it extremely hard to tell how balanced the cube is. For now, this cube is mostly a thought exercise even though it really exists. I hope in a couple of years my kids will be old enough to get the concept of drafting and the fun will begin.
If anyone is interested in looking at my list when commenting on my post it it #376 on cubetutor.
So with the talk of Karakas I have got to ask:
Karakas vs. Kjeldoran Outpost?
I am running a powered 360, but have been playing since Kjeldoran Outpost was a powerhouse during Ice Age and Mirage. At that time Karakas was $3. I have a hard time with the nostalgia aspect of cube...
I have a 360 powered cube. I run the following number of 1 drops:
White 7
Blue 1
Black 7
Red 8 (not counting Greater Gargadon)
Green 11 (most are mana elves)
Black/Red 1
Green/White 1
White/Red 1
As a youth, I traded Ancient Tomb away as quickly as I could find a sucker. A land that dealt two damage to yourself was a tough idea to swallow. Now it is an awesome ramp land.
I want to be buried next to my wife in a small rural town.
I, for one, am really excited to finally have a set with nothing I am interested in. WOTC has been pumping out product so fast that I haven't been able to acquire the cards I would like to try let alone test them.
