    Sorry Ashiok, what you said makes no sense. The question is representations IN THE CARDS versus the population of the real world. We cannot say what the population of Benalia is.
    You can't say what is proportion of white/blacks in Benalia, therefore you use the real world as proxy, which is exactly what I did.
    Quote from Negator_402 »
    You are dead wrong about dimorphism. The strength and athleticism gulf between human male and female is broader than, I would venture to say, most advanced mammals, including lions, whose dimorphism is famous.
    Now you're drawing your line in mammals (for some arbitrary reason) when before you said 'in nature'. And you will say below that I'm the one moving the goalposts? Tsktsk. Anyway, even if you stop on mammals I would venture to say that... you're wrong. I'm not a specialist so I won't claim for certain, but bunchs of non-human primates have greater dimorphism than humans, such as gorillas, oranguntans and mandrills.

    You can cite to your biologist credentials, and I will cite to my attorney skillset. You arguments are poor because you move the goal posts to whatever you think favors you in order to distract from basic and obvious conclusions. And suggesting someone is influenced by the opinions of others is condescending and hilariously myopic, since chances are I am older and more well-read on a breadth (if perhaps not biology) than you are. You should learn to argue before doing so with such ferocity.
    You're just claiming here that I'm moving goalposts without pointing out where I did so, so I will just ignore that. I'm just venturing a guess regarding you being ingluenced by other since you quoted Jeremy in one of your posts, but I'm sure you could have come to these conclusions on your own. I'm just saying that you're basing them on an incorrect assessment of the facts. I already countered your points on the calculation of the proportion, on the migration probability and on the biological difference, so I don't see what in my argumentation is 'poor', unless 'poor' is code for 'destroys my point of view and therefore I don't like it'.

    I don't like to quote only parts of what you said, but your post is too gigantic to adress the whole of it. Here is what I would say in response.

    I will address the comments here as one reply:

    Ashiok: I am sorry, but you are adding a highly unnecessary calculation to a simple equation. Black people, in the US, make up about 12-13% of the population. Using your statistics, 7 are black, and 18 are white (lets ignore the knights entirely, since their race was not made to be a prominent issue). 28% are black. There is no need for complex statistics.
    No. Here you're simply doing a basic statistical error. The cards are just a SAMPLE of the whole population of Dominaria, which I'm assuming - for the sake of the argument - holds the same proportion of white/blacks than our real world. You can't just do the ratio of that sample, say that it is different from 15% (which is the actual number, not 12~13), and claim that it is not accurate. Don't you see that, by doing your way, almost all samples would end up different and therefore inaccurate? You have to see what is the chance of having the proportion that we see in the cards with an arbitrary chance of 15% of picking a black person.

    If you don't understand that, I can explain it again in other terms.
    Quote from Negator_402 »
    I looked at the new map of Dominaria to see how believable a mass Jamurran migration to far-west Aerona was. It is not. The distance seems to be as far, relative to earth, as from San Francisco to Mongolia. Dominaria is 2.5 times the size of Earth. Seems...unlikely. And we never had a mention of a Jamuuran exodus.
    Three-hundred years have passed in a world where I'm sure there are plenty of magical means of transportation. If you assume that people just went ON FOOT at 5km/h walking 6 hours a day, they would cover 30 km in a day. Near 11,000 km in a year. Earth's circunference is 40,000 km. In just 4 years they could have reached the other continent. And I'm being fairly lenient with my numbers here. Even if you want to say that they made stops along the way you can't say that they wouldn't at least get there after a whole century had passed, let alone 3.

    Human beings have some of the most drastic sexual dimorphism in nature.
    As a biologist, I can confidently say this is utter horse*****. Human beings are VERY similar to each other across sexes, even if there exists general mean differences. Just as a reference point, the difference between male and female gorillas in bodyweight is about 50% while in humans it is only 15%, and I'm not even gonna get to invertebrates because there is some DRASTIC differences there.

    I will stop here because it is no use to address multiple points, becomes tedious. You're being higly inaccurate about the things you're claiming that I know something about, so excuse me if I suspect your claims of things that I actually don't know something about, like the effects of diversity initiatives in comic books and the new pacific rim movie. My honest opinion is that you're looking for something to be outraged about, either because other people influenced you to think that way or because things are changing and people are often scared of change.

    Some representation is fine. Forced, propaganda style overrepresentation is not fine. Black people are not a third of MTG players.
    Alright sir, I was going to say nothing more on the matter, but now you've prompted me to show what statistics can show us.

    From the batch of human cards that we have from Dominaria with artwork, there are 27 human creatures+planeswalkers in total. 18 are white, 7 are black, and 2 you can't say what they are (knight of malice and cabal paladin).

    The data that I could quickly find on black people around the world tells me that they make 15% of the population, worldwide and in the US.

    I wrote a script on MATLAB that calculates the chances of you picking a particular distribution of blacks/whites (here I'm calling everything non-black as white) with a 15% chance of picking a black person everytime. The chances of you getting a 18/7 representation, after iterating a hundred thousand times, is around 4.4%. If you count both knights as white people (since you think the white people are depicted as bad), the chances go up to about 5.9%. In the latter case, if this was a scientific hypothesis ('black people are being more represented than what is expected by chance'), it would be rejected. In the former, it would be accepted.

    That is, however, with the cards that we have spoiled so far. Is that going to change at the end of spoiler season? It is possible. So far, if you count the knights as white people, you have no legs to stand on, otherwise, you might have a chance, heh.

    function Magic = testproportion(white,black)

    chance = 0.15;
    count = 0;

    for i=1:100000
    numberblack = 0;
    for j=1:(white+black)
    pick = rand;
    if pick <= chance
    numberblack = numberblack + 1;
    end
    end
    if numberblack == black
    count = count + 1;
    end
    end

    Magic = (count/100000)*100;

    end

    I was under the impression that this was 300 years later after original Dominaria. What is the issue with dark-skinned knights in the medieval-european world 300 years later? Maybe migration took place as someone said? Not to mention that even European countries have, you know, black people in it?

    Such pointless complaints for such a trivial detail of the artwork. The flavor text of the card is, indeed, amazing.

    I mean, it is powerful. If there is some abzan self-mill legend-ramp deck, this can probably see play.

    Heh. The classical abzan self-mill legend-ramp archetype.

    I love this card for an R/G aggro deck. It does everything that an R/G card should do: smash face and gives mana. She is a nice curve topper.

    That said, I really dislike the change in her physical complexion. I think the original art was pretty iconic, and there is the 'slim fit' build which she appeared to have, where you don't need to have tons of muscles just because you're an active warrior, rather being fast and powerful (Bruce Lee style). This change to a schwarzenegger-like build feels completely out of left field.

    I think people are freaking out about this card unnecessarily. It is just a counterspell folks. It is gonna be cute if a Ux flash deck shows up in standard, but there isn't much to say about the card besides that.

    In short, this is only good if you can realistically do something else with the mana that you untapped, which requires some build around. Otherwise, I'd stick with negate.

    You have these backwards. The orange background is the amazing Urza's Destiny/Starter original. The other one is the terrible 7th Edition art. They brought the original back from 8th Edition because it was better.
    Correct, gonna change it. Except that the 7th Edition art is pretty great too! It is because when I started playing I saw first the 7th edition one, then the reprint with the old art. Forgot that the newest reprint (before dominaria) was using the original artwork.
    I like Daarken's Thorn Elemental. The original and the Seventh Edition just felt like an anthropomorphic plant, like it could be treefolk. (This has been a problem with green elementals since Wood Elemental, but Rushwood Elemental and Silverglade Elemental struck me as its nadir.) This one, however, you can see through the body, so it feels more like animated vegetable matter.
    I legit don't understand how the new one doesn't look antropomorphic to you and how the problem with the old ones is that you can't see through them. The old ones literally have holes in their torso, legs and arms where you can see through them! It is not a problem for one elemental to be anthropomorphic, and I think thorn elemental looks quite different from any treefolk due to lack of leaves and head position.

    Man, I'm not one to usually complain about the artwork, but that thorn elemental art makes me sad. Just compare that generic digital stuff with... this:

    Or this:

    Such a terrible update to a great creature. One of the first that I learned about when starting to play magic. Sad.

    Ridiculously overcosted equipment that will never see play outside of fringe edh decks.

    Cool art though.

    Wow, so overcosted. This could easily be CMC 4, but maybe that would bump it to rare if you didn't change the stats.

    All these legends... nobody will remember half of them after this set is fully spoiled.

    Limited-only card with very fringe applications. It is fun to see people trying to find a home for it though.

    Have to grab a foil for my collection of sea creatures.

    So, Teferi making a promise is better than The Chain Veil, one of the most powerful artefacts in the multiverse?
    This is mother******* Teferi we're talking about here. Guy who phased out an entire section of a plane. The Chain Veil ain't got nothing on him.

    On that note, card is pretty powerful, though the mana cost is quite restrictive. I can see it becoming a thing, but it will require a very specific shell.
