Draining Whelk can only counter things, this can do that (not as reliably) but it can also do much more, not to mention it can be used as a combat trick where Whelk really can't because spells are usually played before or after blockers are declared.
I think you underrate this card quite a bit. It's essentially a 5/5 with haste for 5 that converts all your land drops into draws on the following turn.
You can even use the land to defend herself until you can use the ultimate next turn.
I like this more than Nissa, Worldwaker and will definately find room for her.
Agreed that she's underrated. If you support super ramp, I like Worldwaker much more, it not than Vital Force will probably be more useful.
This Nissa is also useful in Wildfire / Upheaval decks, just saying.
I think this is waaaaayyyy better than Draining Whelk. Sure, Whelk has the lock, but Gearhulk's ACS is miles above Whelk's, and his BCS isn't limited to a certain archetype that could already be achieved with other cards (Mystic Snake / Venser and Clique for a softlock).
All are great cards, it's what you need on the curve is what matters. Ally of Zendikar is in a super crowded slot, the others not so much (in comparison at least).
Her long term price is going to be dependent on if she's a hit or miss in modern, a format I really can't say much about. Definitely putting her on my "buy after Kaladesh rotates out" list, but I play a good amount of retail limited so hopefully I'll crack her at the pre-release or something, because she is no doubt the chase mythic of the set.
Being a cube staple and playable in EDH, her floor after rotation will probably be around $10 I'm guessing, and that's only assuming that she's a complete dud in Modern.
If the black Gearhulk tutors, it will probably be in the style of Vampiric tutor that puts the card on top of your library. I can't imagine demonic tutor on a stick at 5 mana when Sidisi and Runescarred Demon are at 5 mana + exploit / 7 mana respectively.
I think she's way better than Primal Hunter, the GGG in the mana cost is a huge eyesore and his draw ability can be inconsistent. Nissa ramps, smashes for 5 hastey damage, and Regrowth is an extremely powerful effect.
Now that I think about it, she fits into Oath of Druids very well: she's a threat that isn't a creature, can regrowth a critical card that was milled, can help you ramp into your threats, and also provides offense / defense on her own.
If this were any other color it'd probably be an easy slam dunk, but this has to compete with AEtherling, Consecrated Sphinx, and Upheaval.... I certainly like hulk more than Frost Titan though.
She's more useful than Worldwaker in a generic 3-cmc midrange deck, but Worldwaker is solid in a super ramp deck.
I can probably cut Boreal Druid for this, I can support colorless just fine without it. This Nissa makes me feel much better after cutting Greenwarden of Murasa.
This card is great though, massive combat trick that can recast a Counterspell / Bolt / Dig Through Time. Competition is steep at blue 6 drops though. I'll try and make room for it.
Also, this card can literally kill you. So can Earthquake, but it's much easier to break the symmetry of Earthquake than Death Cloud.

One complaint: Vital Force is a stupid moniker.

The dream: curve Mystic Confluence into this.
