    Hero of Bladehold

This is a card that really hasn't been working out for me. This might be the only card left in my cube that doesn't pass the Vindicate test.

I still see a lot of people running her - Does she work>

Still extremely strong if you can untap with it, but I've found that any deck wanting to play Hero of Bladehold is usually better off playing a planeswalker of the same mana cost instead. I've cut it a while ago and haven't missed it too much, although I still see it do powerful things in other cubes that I play.

Show and Tell has a notorious reputation on Magic online because of the high risk of giving your opponent a fatty and sees little play due to that. However, this card plays out differently in paper because you greatly reduce the amount of fatties available for your opponents as you're picking them up yourself, or hate-drafting them, which from my experiences make the card quite valid.

    Thoughts?

Show and Tell / Eureka / etc are risky, but if you're playing them right, the risks should be asymmetrical in your favor. I like to think of it as being the casino: other players can and will win at your own game, but you'll win at your own game much more in the long run.

Massacre Wurm is good at what it does, but I think it's pretty niche at this point. As a fattie in a reanimator / cheaty face deck, things like Elesh Norn / Dragonlord Atarka / Inferno Titan are generally better, so it's not really necessary as a crowd control fatty outside of larger cubes, IMO.

How do you feel about Gitaxian Probe vs. Opt/Consider?

Gitaxian Probe > Consider > Opt >>> Peek in my book. Gitaxian Probe mainly wins because it's free. Consider and Opt are both generally better early game and later game than Peek IMO, especially since they let you keep riskier hands and helps put together mulligans.

My kneejerk reaction is "yeah, but Gitaxian Probe is just better". But that's not a reason not to play both. I certainly like this better than Opt. Probably even Consider. But I think I like Thought Scour better in the world where gitaxian probe exists. Ponder, Preordain, and Portent are on another level from this card. I could take or leave Serum Visions now that we have so many options.

I like Opt / Consider much more, I think it's generally better to increase your card selection than know what's in your opponent's hand. Honestly I don't like Peek any more than most 1U Impulse variants, lack of card selection is a big deal.

I find it strange that in 2022, you're posting an article on 2020.

In the article, I mentioned that I used to do an end of the year summary on Reddit called The (insert year here) Golden Cube Awards, which I delayed (and then eventually forgot about) in 2020 because Commander Legends came out so late and I needed more time with it to do it justice, but I eventually forgot about doing the whole thing. This is me picking up where I left off from that series.

Also, a lot of people haven't really been able to play with their cubes since the start of the pandemic, so I felt that 2020 would be a good year to do a retrospective for those people.

There are a few comments I would like to add about cards mentioned here:
    - Phoenix of Ash/ Court of Grace were fine cards, but their slots were just too competitive.

I definitely agree with Court of Grace, but I think Phoenix of Ash is pretty up there. It's arguably the best mono red beater at 3-cmc due to its reach. I do like it more than Laelia and think that only Rabblemaster is ahead of it due to its versatility / 2R mana cost.

    Thanks for reading!

Yeah, Endurance has been over-performing my expectations. Originally I pegged it as the worst in the cycle with Subtlety as #4, but now I have Subtlety at the bottom of the bunch. Subtletly still is a good card, but it's not as strong as other options at is function / cmc, IMO.

Consecrated Sphinx > Subtlety for me. Very different cards, but Consecrated Sphinx is better and more important in its role for me than Subtlety is.

I'm locking this thread because I think we'd be better served in the long run to talk about these individual cards that have nothing to do with each other in their own respective threads for archiving purposes. Please either move individual card discussions to their respective threads, or create a new thread if one doesn't already exist for that card.

Aren't there a few cards that are just strict upgrades at this point? Migration Path for example.

Yeah, but even then I like Kodama's Reach / Cultivate more than any Explosive Vegetation variant (even though I've cut Kodama's Reach / Cultivate a while ago). With 4 and 5 drops being more powerful than ever, I want my earlier spells to set up for those bombs, and not just ramp with 4 mana. I've also cut Solemn Simulacrum / Thran Dynamo for those reasons and haven't missed them one bit.

It is extremely disappointing that this requires creatures to connect instead of being a pure Edric ability.

They're the same ability in 1v1, Edric also requires combat damage.

I've been cubing Kabira Takedown, and have been happy with it. I think I like Takedown over this because Takedown can hit Planeswalkers and doesn't have to wait for combat, so it more easily answers things like Dark Confidant. Removal stapled onto lands is good, though, especially so on an untapped land.

I like this a lot more than Kabira Takedown since this is a lot more playable in control decks (which wants this effect more than any other archetype, IMO), and isn't as situationally dependent on your creature count. Also, the land half is just strictly better. I think it's a fine trade-off for not being able to hit walkers, white's not hurting on walker removal anyways.

Definitely slots into every white deck, just a matter of making a slot for it in your cubes. I really like this for control decks especially. One thing to note is that this is a good way to get around a lot of protection like Mother of Runes / Hexdrinker's protection from instants / proection from white in general / etc (can't get around Giver of Runes though since that gives protection from colorless). I like this a lot more than something like Castle Ardenvale. My only complaint with this card is that it doesn't add value to Primeval Titan, but oh well.

W has excellent untapped lands now with karakas, Cave, and this. I can’t imagine wanting to fool around with etbt stuff or the pain/slowness of emeria’s call.

Emeria's Call has been playing well for us, for me it's currently the #2 white utility land after Karakas and before Cave of the Frost Dragon (which also has been doing well). I definitely see it being in my cube for the long term.

  • posted a message on [SCD] Meloku the Clouded Mirror
I cut Meloku a while ago and don't really miss it (aside from its awesome art). While he has powerful plays, Meloku relies too much on surviving the next turn or just being really late in the game where you have a bunch of mana up. Even he he does survive the untap, bouncing your lands to hand can be a lot of the time. For me, Shark Typhoon does a lot of what Meloku wants to do in a control deck in terms of being a threat that scales in power the more mana you have available to you while being a lot more flexible in the early game and having flash and being essentially uncounterable to boot.

That being said, I wouldn't mind seeing a power crept Meloku in the upcoming Kamigawa set.
