Blue Moon? Can give many a deck fits via Moon and/or counters, of course, and there is a variety of wincons to choose from.

edit: Also offers some nice sideboard options.

Since when has Esper been the king of control mirrors?
It isn’t, and never has been.

Leyline replaces going to the yard with being exiled, so the trigger can’t even take place.

(Small) life gain as a rider is not all that, but if Standard is even remotely like I remember it being when Invasion was released, Absorb might well see quite a lot of play, in slower decks.

Modern won’t want it; likewise, most other formats.

Hilarious. “Control” is not some static archetype common to all formats at all times, any more than “midrange”, “aggro”, “tempo”, “combo” or “big mana” are.

Specific archetypes (also builds) matter. Like, a lot. Hell, specific cards matter too.

The notion that “aggro” should always be a safe bet vs “control” (for instance) is absolutely ludicrous.

Overall, Modern is way too fast and non-interactive these days. My opinion, but also one shared by a heck of a lot of players and commentators.

That is “the state of Modern”, like it or not (fwiw, I don’t). At least UW Control manages to go against the grain, I guess, and even snag the odd W. Even so.

Intention probably counts for more than arbitrary categories.

I know, intention looks like a pretty damn nebulous concept. But it’s right there, at the core of it all, determining the ‘percentage’ anyway.

What is a given player hoping to achieve, or get out of playing their deck. That’s it, really. What kind of EDH experience do they enjoy.

It’s fascinating to me that Pauper has better counterspells than Modern, and better cantrips too.

On the face of it, and reading around a bit, I can definitely see the argument for giving some blue thing(s) the banhammer.

There doesn’t appear to be confirmation, yet. But it is overwhelmingly likely to be X 1/1s, with a heckton of precedent behind it.

    Not many choices in Modern...

Red: suboptimal Phoenix or suboptimal Prison
    Black: uh ... 8-Rack or MBD ,,, ?
Blue: Taking Turns or possibly Merfolk
    Green: Tron
White: Martyr Proc, D&T or Pillowfort maybe ...

I don’t see what 7th edition would really bring to Modern, besides of course Counterspell. And going from 7th onwards would be too awkward, if that was another option.

Perhaps if there was some kind of non-Standard cycle of sets that was brought out, with all cards available to Modern, that might work. Extremely unlikely to ever happen, but it would be nice.

Then again, all they need to do is print good stuff in Standard. There is plenty already (some of it format-warping, in fact), but notably not certain things (e.g. Counterspell), is all.

Could see a case being made for Loki (or a Loki-like figure, of course) in Izzet, or even Grixis.

The exiling only happens if the card would be going back to the graveyard. So, for your example, bottom of library as usual.
