The prices of cards in this set are far less likely to hold their value than cards from other sets. The cards' value is high only because of the incredibly low supply of the cards in question. Of the rare and mythics worth more than the MSRP of a pack, how many have seen a reprint? Only 10%-20%, and all were only printed in sets before Magic's boom during the RTR period.
Furthermore, very, very few of the high value cards see competitive play, a marker of the ability of a card's value to withstand a reprint in the long term.
Does anyone honestly believe that filter lands see more play than shocks? The price of shocks is so much lower than filters because shocks were reprinted in massive numbers in RTR block, whereas the filters were only printed (outside of the Expeditions) in the original Shadowmoor block 10 years ago, when the player base was far smaller.
I'd be curious to see where prices are for this set in two months, because I'd be shocked if the EV of a booster box is anywhere close to where these calculations peg it before release.
Funny, I pulled the same things. I also got a Stormbreath Dragon, which paid for the entire event for me. The whole reason I picked blue was to get Thassa, and she was in my seeded booster pack.
I went G/U, and Thassa did not disappoint (I frankly got spoiled by getting to Scry 1 during each upkeep). I went undefeated against my first two opponents (a G/B deck and a U/B deck respectively), but got my clock cleaned by a red/white heroic deck. Of course, I didn't pull Thassa in either of those two games, and G/U has very limited removal options in Theros (especially in my pool), but it was fun nonetheless. This was my first prerelease even though I started playing Magic back when Revised came out (although I took a ten year hiatus), but I can tell you that this won't be the last.
I had actually bought a few other packs from the place, and none of the other ones had this "problem" (although I did get a foil Stoneforge Mystic, which was pretty awesome)
Has this ever happened to anyone else? I've opened A LOT of packs in my time, and I have never seen a mispackaging like this before.
Shade? Shadow?
Unfortunately, I think that Wizards will wait until the final set in the block to unveil the "previously known Planeswalker that is getting a card for the first time" Planeswalker card. They did that in the Return to Ravnica block and in the Zendikar block.
I really, really want to see Kiora as soon as possible, but if she shows up in Theros (which I think is far more likely than not), it will be in Journey into Nyx.
At this point, I'm guessing that Ashiok is the final Planeswalker for Theros (set, not the block). My lingering question is which race (s)he belongs to. Perhaps the Returned? Or is it just some human?
Sorin kind of did it to spite Nissa for doublecrossing him at the last minute and freeing all of the Eldrazi.
Jace is Jace
Chandra just cares about her freedom. She doesn't have a very large sense of honor the way that a white character might.
Gideon came face to face with Emrakul and knew that he was no match by himself (which is true). It was a strategic retreat.
Karn went to go clean up after his dumb self after he pooped Phyrexian oil across the Multiverse.
Dack is almost certainly not going to be made into a card because IDW owns him. Until IDW gives up the rights (good luck with that), there's no way Wizards will bother paying exorbitant royalties when they could just as well make a brand new character, royalty-free.
Also, as much as I want Kiora to show up in Theros, I have a feeling that we'll have to wait until Journey into Nyx for her to show up. Just like they did with Ral Zarek, they're going to stick the long-awaited Planeswalker into the third block of the set (likely to try to boost sales). I really hope that I'm wrong and that I can finally get my hands on a Kiora Atua Planeswalker card, but it's most likely that we'll have to wait for her until the third set in the block.
Finally, it's highly unlikely that Vraska will show up in Theros. There are plenty of gorgons on Ravnica, so it's not like they are something unique to Theros (like Satyrs are).
I don't know if I believe it myself, but what does everyone else think?
