@elconquistador, me neither im not a player who jumps on a new card just because its new. I always ask myself: what would i remove for that card, and is it better ?
Skewer is a good card. Almost good enough to make the 75. What makes the difference for me is the sorcery speed.
It will put a weight on your other instants just to be able to use the spectacle.
It feels like the setup cost to get there is just high enough to make me hesitate...
You say that you rarely end up with only 2 lands in play.
I agree with you.
In that case Then, why not play shard volley ?....
It will ALWAYS cost 1 and an instant, which is strictly better than skewer ...
Im still hesitant.
PS, im playing 3 skullcrack maindeck (0 side) and i believe i will keep them main for GP Toronto.
Theres so many accidental lifegain to balance the fact that 2 mana 3 damage is below average.
And i will be playing cinder lash instead of destructive revelry. It offers the possibility to be proactive instead of reactive, which is the vision that burn decks want to have. Just keep one mana up instead of 2.
And in worst case, its a 3 mana destrucive revelry. Anyway its not at turn 2 that you need to disenchant (ok maybe kci or hardened scales, but those games sometime you can disenchant turn 3 and still be ok)
And in bonus, you might get free damage point.
Im really not convinced yet by the 2 spectacles cards.
Dont forget, as a sorcery and with the spectacle clause, you cant cast those spells before attacking.
You will have some akward situation often that will prevent you from attacking with your guide or your swiftspear (spectacle is a nombo with prowess of swiftspear).
Imagine also if you are in topdeck mode, you will have to pay the complete cost.
Imagine also if your creature get destroyed before damage, or if your first damage spell get countered, you will not be able to cast spectacle spells...
For skewer the critics, im not convinced yet ...
It seems at best a lava spike ... at worst, a 3 mana lava spike
Dont forget its a sorcery, sonit might get akward often. For example, you cant play it before attacking (or while combat) with a swiftspear/guide ...
I will replace all my destructive revelry for cinder lash.
I think its better because it allows us to be proactive. Just stick it into play on turn 2 and We will not need to keep always 2 mana open (just one mana).
In bonus, we might get 1-2 damage extra with it
@cannspec, the sideboard section was updated a long time ago, it might not be up to date.
its also missing the spirits matchup, (and probably more if we start thinking about it)
@elconquistador, you did a great job with the sideboard section on the first page. Would it be possible to update it with the current meta ?
I guess its a hardwork to do, maybe we could just brainstorm here and write our matchup/sideboard strategies here ?
So i think against UR phoenix, i would do :
+ Path to exile
+ RIP
+ Deflecting Palm
- Skullcrack (if you play them maindeck, I do)
- combination of boros charm/lava spike
I'm not sure how to side against that deck, as i never played against yet.
Path for sure.
Then i think i would still board in RIP. Yes it does nothing against drake, but at least it does something against the phoenix/bedlam reveler/looting/etc...
I think would also bring in deflecting palm (i play 2 in my sideboard). Could be funny against a drake ?
I would board out 3 skullcrack as i dont think they will gain any life (yes i play 3 skullcrack maindeck).
and i would probably board out some lava axe/boros charm as it doesnt target creatures
What do you guys think ? do you think the logic would be the same for the similar decks :
UR phoenix, mono red phoenix, mono red hollow one phoenix, BR hollow one phoenix)
I'm preparing for GP Toronto (Modern) and I think I will go with 4 GY hate.
(3 RIP and 1 Relic of progenitus) No reason why 3-1, I could also go 4 RIP... the important here is the 4 GY slots.
I think that going to 6 GY hate slots is too much. I think that 4 slots is perfect.
What do you sideboard out ? What happens if you draw 2-3 cards of GY hate .... those will be dead cards.
Yes there are a lot more decks using GY right now, but the speed of our deck is the best weapon. we only need 1 GY hate to tempo out them and give us that extra 1-2 turn to kill them.
PS, GY hate doesn't shrink down Crackling Drake :'(
I've been playing burn since 1 year now. I've been playing the Naya version with one stomping ground in order to cast my destructive revelry in sideboard.
The only real reason that i'm playing the destructive revelry is because i'm afraid of leyline of sanctity ....
Should i still play destructive revelry ? What are the current good enchantments that needs to be answered right away ?
Yes Hardened scale is a great enchantment, but i think burn is able to beat it with smash to smithereens instead of destructive revelry (and just destroy any artifact that they will play).
So I'm thinking of replacing the destructive revelry for smash to smithereens (and upgrading to a better manabase) and just close my eyes and try to dodge enchantments ?
Against which matchup do you side in Harsh mentor ?
And same question for Meteor Golem ? and how often were you able to cast it ?
I still believe that Fight With Fire is the "less worst" card against decks that boards in Lyra.
The ideal solution for me (and that's what I'm actually playing) is to splash black for unlicensed desintegration(and while playing black, add scrapheap scrounger and Duress)
Hi guys,
I've started to playtest R/b aggro for GP providence in august. I know the meta will change with the PT in 2 weeks, but I still want to play standard in the meantime.
Here is my list :
4 aether hub
4 dragonskull summit
15 mountain
4 Bomat Courrier
4 Soul-scar mage
3 shock
3 Abrade
2 Kari Zev Skyship raider
3 Heart of Kiran
4 Scrapheap scrounger
2 Pia Nalaar
4 Goblin chainwhirler
3 Unlicensed disentegration
1 Chandra Torch of Defiance
4 Hazoret the fervant
I'm not playing any phoenix...
It's a little bit slow and pretty much all the removal in the format is exiling ... So I prefer a card like Heart of Kiran that will hit at least 1-2 hit before getting exiled ...
And when I board in the chandra and/or glorybringer, theres to many high drops
Sideboard (15)
1 Abrade
2 Chandra, Torch of Defiance
2 Chandra's Defeat
3 Fight with Fire
3 Glorybringer
1 Scavenger Grounds
2 Magma Spray
1 Aethersphere
What do you guys think about this list ?
Do you have any sideboard strategies and game plan against each matchup ?
What are the best and worst matchups for mono red ?
Hi SRADracer,
I like your play (#1) of searing blaze on turn turn 2. I would have done the same play, I always try to play searing blaze as soon as I can (with the 3 damage activated) because you never know if you are going to draw anymore lands.
So at that point, your oponent is already at 14 life wich is good knowing the rest of your hand is just gas.
If you would have played the option #2, your oponent would have been at 15 life at the end of the turn.
With 17 lands remaining in your 51 card deck, that means you would have had 33% chance of drawing a land for your searing blaze... It's risky.... imagine if you draw another searing blaze ... now you have 2 "almost dead" cards in your hand :S
Thats why I tend to always play my searing blaze as soon as possible, specially against mana creature (elfs, birds, hierarchs)
I think your comment makes sense, I will probably just go with 2 firewalkers and remove the bridges. The main reason for me to include them was Hollow One, but I would hate to have to play the mirror without firewalker.
I don't remember by heart what I side in/out against Hollow one (I don't have my sideboard sheet with me right now), but I use the sideboard tech on the first page of this tread.
I believe I'm taking out 4 Eidolon and 3 lava spike to bring in 2 path, 1 relic of progenitus, 2 RIP and 2 Dpalm.
Dont forget that they might have some Kologhans command, so Palm might be better than bridge it that case.
I'm not sure about the ensnaring bridge. It feels like bridge plays the same role as Deflecting palm, and we will bring bridge and palm in pretty much the same matchups, wich might be too many cards.
I would cut the bridge for 2 other cards. In my sideboard (listed a couple of post before) I replaced the bridge for 2 kor firewalker as I expect to play against other burn decks.
You could also replace the bridge for 2 Firecraft exquisite if you expect to play against a lot of UW/x control
