I've had this on my mind recently, what do people think of a mono black devotion/death cloud? Here were the cards I was thinking of brewing around:

    4 Leyline of the Void
    4 Mistvein Borderpost
    4 Veinfire Borderpost
    4 Death Cloud
    4 Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx

    Would be the base

Not sure how to rack up devotion in addition to the borderposts. Evil Presence is funny, but probably unplayable. Also kind of a non-bo with Death Cloud. Same goes for Contaminated Ground, but it's slower. Does make the opponent lose 3 from fetches though. I feel like neither are close to being playable.

Also, no idea how to win. Shrieking Affliction with Raven's Crime and the Borderposts is cute, but not good. Gutterbones? Obviously 4 copies of Liliana of the Veil would help.

I keep thinking about that shell though and how a very early Death Cloud with borderposts on the battlefield would really set the opponent back for pretty much any deck they are playing. Any thoughts on how this janky idea could be put to the test?

Anyone else notice that there are Bolas horns somewhere in all of the Bolas aligned walkers' stained glass artwork?

Edit: Maybe not, I missed a couple where I don't see any

Contents (In case link stops working):
    • 6 War of the Spark booster packs
    • 1 Insert
    1 Foil Stamped Premium Planeswalker
    • 1 Foil Stamped Premium Card
    • 1 Spindown life counter

Attachment of site also provided in case website is down.

Intrigued. Assuming rare planeswalkers, but I doubt they stretch to uncommon. The promos could also be prerelease specific kind of like planeswalker deck planeswalkers. Power level wise, I’m thinking there will be some flip walkers, maybe some walkers with only - abilities (like sagas) or maybe some will have static abilities with one very weak “ultimate” as it’s only loyalty ability

If only Icy Manipulator were legal in Standard.....

Icy Manipulator IS in standard. It's in Dominaria

That's the joke. I do appreciate how this curves into Time of Ice, though.

Exactly. Not that UW Tap will be a thing but the card does open up some interesting lines of thought.

I think UW Flash Prison could be fun... Merfolk Trickster, Seal Away, Verity Circle, Sleep, Time of Ice, Warrant//Warden, Angel of Grace is a fun shell. Fill in the rest with counterspells and a couple Precognitive Perception and adjust the sideboard for creatureless control.

Could also make for an interesting prison wizard deck with Naban, Dean of Iteration, Merfolk Trickster, Watertrap Weaver, Deputy of Detention and all of the previous tap cards mentioned.

Edit: Dowsing Dagger seems fun especially against control

Good to see unconditional 4 cmc board wipes again and I must say in a way it's cleverly designed. The lifegain part is for the most part not that relevant.
But the thing is most decks that want to run cards like in the maindeck are blue so you are immediately in 3 colors and WWBB is no joke. Obviously often your life depends on casting your wrath and if you then also want to run stuff like Absorb and Thought Erasure in the deck I can imagine you will lose a certain percentage of games simply because you were unable to cast all your spells in time.

I know a lot of people are excited for Esper. Im personally an Esper fanboy too but Jeskai still has tools that have no competition and it gains new stuff too like Electrodominance so it will be interesting to see how things turn out.

I think orzhov can be a solid control deck. Better than Esper because of less mana constraints

    Read my mind

I am still not convinced that Elenda is better than Seraph of the Scales. With Elenda, you’re paying 4 for a 1/1 and need a sac outlet that most likely uses mana get the most value out of her. The Seraph seems like a more efficient threat on the board with a death trigger that is usually as good or better than Elenda’s

If your Elenda trigger is giving you less than Seraph's, you built your deck very wrong.

Right, but I think that it will be tough to build a deck that makes elendas trigger better most of the time. Especially without a free sac outlet

how free does the sac outlet have to be? is Temple of Aclazotz good enough, is Pitiless Pontiff either?

Ideally, completely free, but I doubt we'll be getting anything along those lines. Pontiff is better than temple probably, but I'm not sure if either are really good enough.

Abzan or Mardu tokens will most likely be a thing with this card in standard.
There are still hordes of saprolings and even vampires waiting to be abused.
Poison-Tip Archer and Slimefoot, the Stowaway are no joke when they start eating 2 life per trigger.

Anyone remembers Elenda, the Dusk Rose??
    Time to brew

Can't wait to set up the monster turns of Divine Visitation with Afterlife creatures into this.
    .

Same. I posted in the new cards discussion for standard a WB afterlife tokens list that I think I’m definitely going to plan on trying out. A 1 cmc and 3 cmc afterlife creature is what I’m hoping we get this week as that would make the curve really good. Costly Plunder to draw cards. Midnight Reaper to draw cards, Divine Visitation and Seraph of the Scales at he top of your curve with some mortify’s and this and it could be a fun deck.

Tainted Field is a land I always use in Orzhov

Gift of Immortality could be interesting since you'd potentially be able to double up a death trigger every turn

I'm really digging the afterlife mechanic and with not too many ways to exile creatures efficiently in standard, I feel like it could make a pretty strong and resilient deck. Some combination of the following:

    CMC 1:
    4 Hunted Witness
    2-4 Legion's Landing

    CMC 2:
    4 Imperious Oligarch
    4 Tithe Taker
    2-4 Costly Plunder

    CMC 3:
    2-4 History of Benalia
    2-4 Mortify

    CMC 4:
    4 Seraph of the Scales
    0-2 Ajani, Adversary of Tyrants

I'm not on the Elenda, the Dusk Rose hype train. Without a free sacrifice outlet to grow Elenda quickly, I think I'd rather be playing Seraph of the Scales with 4 mana all the time.

    CMC 5:
    0-2 Divine Visitation

The main plan of the deck is to be resilient and gain advantage early by sacrificing your own creatures and then taking over the game with Seraph of the Scales or Divine Visitation. Ajani, Adversary of Tyrants also helps bring back afterlifer's that haven't been exiled.

Ideally, there will be a couple more creatures printed with afterlife in Ravnica Allegiance. A one mana and three mana afterlife option would be awesome to replace Hunted Witness and maybe History of Benalia. With this base, you can also fill open spots with Pitiless Pontiff for an additional sac outlet or even try something like Teysa Karlov. Lyra Dawnbringer would work very well with Seraph of the Scales and Divine Visitation. Splashing would also be an interesting option as going Abzan opens up the door to Assassin's Trophy and Trostani Discordant while going Mardu gives access to Bedevil, Judith, the Scourge Diva, and a sideboard Deafening Clarion that could end up very one-sided. I'm excited to see the rest of the set spoiled next week, but before that happens, what do people think of this idea? I'm not an overly experienced standard player, especially in the current meta.
Per Standard forum rules, new cards should be discussed in New Card Discussion until full set is spoiled. Moving. Thanks! - hoser2

What do people think of Rhythm of the Savages or whatever the name ends up being? I can't seem to ignore that it goes infinite with persist and a sac outlet and got thinking about how it could work right away. I don't think trying to build a deck around the combo itself with tutors etc. would be very effective. Rather, I've thought about trying to implement it into a current deck that has had some success. I've seen a couple of gruul aggro decks do well and took idea from them and added black to come up with this semi combo/aggro Jund list of cards:

If you're unfamiliar with the new enchantment:

    1RG

Creature spells you control can't be countered

Nontoken creatures you control have riot (They ETB with your choice of haste or a +1/+1 counter)

    ETB/infinite life or damage
    Kitchen Finks
    Murderous Redcap

    Ramp
    Birds of Paradise
    Utopia Sprawl

    Good creatures especially with haste:
    Goblin Rabblemaster
    Legion Warboss

Alternate way to get advantage or combo out of nowhere:
    Bloodbraid Elf

    Combo Enablers:
    Melira, Sylvok Outcast
    Viscera Seer
    Spawning Pit
    Rhythm of the Savages

    Removal:
    Lightning Bolt
    Assassin's Trophy

    Advantage/to get combo pieces:
    Faithless Looting

Maybe turn the deck into more of a combo deck with a couple of Summoner's Pact?

My thinking is that you'd want to get the enchantment out on turn 2 if possible by ramping on turn one. You could potentially go infinite on turn 3 by playing Viscera Seer and Kitchen Finks. Or go infinite on turn 4 with Seer and Murderous Redcap

Melira acts as a second way to assemble our combo and I just thought of one or two copies of spawning pit also being worth it to ensure you have a free sac outlet.

Rabblemaster and Warboss seem really good with the enchantment in play making them another way to put a lot of pressure on opponents.

Bloodbraid Elf hits every creature you'd play and can hit a combo piece you need out of nowhere.

Edit: For some reason I was thinking that Bloodbraid hit Redcap when I wrote this, but that's not true. Maybe Bloodbraid wouldn't be the way to go.

The main thing I lost from the gruul aggro lists is Blood Moon which could honestly make the deck significantly weaker to the point where it isn't doable, but I'm not sure. Obviously, you could use them in the sideboard and board them in against certain matchups to make a bit more of a classic gruul aggro deck.

What do you guys think? Does this combo or enchantment have a place in modern and is this list of cards worth trying or would it make for a far too glass cannon of a deck?

I plan on giving Teysa a shot too. I love the fact that you can build a deck around her so many different ways. You can make her pretty competitive too by only adding a couple of cards (Looking at you Ashnod's Altar and Nim Deathmantle.) I'm more of a 75% person as well so I've been thinking of how I want to build around her. I think the new Seraph of the Scales would fit well. Requiem Angel is another one I thought of right away. Pawn of Ulamog could provide some pretty good ramp. Shadows of the Past turns into a scry 2 anytime something dies, which is cool.
