Since when has Esper been the king of control mirrors?

Wow. I'm really surprised anyone is this excited about Absorb in Modern.

Conceptually, I like the UBx decks but they're slow and and have these weird fail rates because the cards in most lists don't have great crossover in trying to keep up with different decks. Cleansing Nova for example deals with artifacts and enchantments when necessary. That UBx decks have a crappy time dealing with enchantments is really the biggest issue though with Search for Azcanta, Conclave Tribunal, Ixalan's Binding and opposing The Eldest Reborn being out there in the wild in significant numbers.

If you stick with Grixis, I don't think you have an option on playing Niv-Mizzet, Parun realistically. It's the most concise way to close out games in those colors. Even a flipped Nicol Bolas, the Ravager is slower and just as susceptible to shenanigans. What else would there be? Sarkhan, Fireblood ultimate? Expansion // Explosion? Nezahal, Primal Tide? I'll pass on all of those for a Niv-Mizzet in conjuction the The Eldest Reborn.

I know Jeskai has its blind spots but I think they are far narrower than the ones Grixis has. Even Esper control seems better. It's just really clunky.

@TomCourtenay, How can you be a fan of playing Jace but not Teferi?

It usually depends on how much the metagame has changed, and how I'm feeling about particular cards that are currently in the list and those that have potential.

Is everyone mostly on 24-land lists? I just noticed that Jaberwocki had two different 24-land list hit a 5-0 on MTGO lately. They both have a few significant differences in the main and sideboard. It just makes me wonder if we're supposed to abandon 25-land lists.

Why the need to go "all-in" on Looting if you're looking to include it? Why not just jam 3 copies into a stock list and make sure you're also playing 3-4 K-Command? Helps a tad with card velocity, helps filter the "wrong half" of the deck, and is an easy 3-of to side out in games 2 and 3 of almost every match. I'd treat it as a game 1 only boost.

Trying to play expensive spells and Faithless Looting in the same deck is usually painful. More often than not, you end up making a choice to keep lands for your expensive spell at the cost of all else. That usually makes me question why I'm including both.

Am I crazy for thinking Deathrite Shaman might actually not be horrible for Modern?

A little bit, yes. DRS is broken in the format.

I think DRS would possibly break modern in half.

Graveyard creature, a mana accelerant for turn 2 LOTV and turn 3 BBE...

I can respect that. I was living a hypothetical dream for a moment. It just seems that Modern is more interactive than Legacy, and for some reason, they want to make creatures matter in Legacy all of a sudden. Maybe this isn't forum for ban list talk. I think I was warned about that once.

Been reading this thread for ages it seems, playing jund for about 2 years now, but this is my first time posting. I think that the biggest problem is that we're all still treating bloodbraid elf as an auto include in our lists because she's unbanned now and she used to be so powerful. The problem to me is that our deck lacks consistency, and BBE does nothing to solve this problem. She's a decent body with a random chance to get you a free LotV and that's about the best you can expect from her. Half of the time by turn 4 her p/t is no longer relevant and it feels real bad to cascade into a thoughtseize when you're low on life or the opponent has an empty hand or a fatal push on an open board. The random nature of cascade plays directly against the consistency were looking for and so BBE seems like a deck building trap. I've cut all 4 of them for a combination of huntmaster of the fells and kalitas, and I couldn't be happier with the changes. Each of these 4 drops do much more to advance our board state and pose an actual threat to the opponent once we've slowly built an advantage in the earlier turns.

As a side note, a couple grim flayer work extremely well with Bob, and I don't think should be overlooked with how easy it is to turn on delirium, or swing on an open board to manipulate our topdecks, grow the tarmogoyf, or make a Bob trigger painless.

In regards to faithless looting, I've tested out 2-3 copies in my 60 and it seems like what flyingdelver has been saying about the deck needs to be entirely redesigned around maximizing the potential of looting with delve creatures, which would come at the expense of tarmogoyf. It competes in the one drop slot with all our discard and removal, and generally felt like the wrong decision to play looting until later in the game when you can play it the same turn as a threat or removal spell.

All in all, I'm feeling that my current build of jund is a lot more potent and consistent when compared with the seemingly "stock" bloodbraid list I was running previously. I'd love some feedback on this from anyone else who has tried it however, I can't take my mtgo and local game store wins as absolute proof of concept after all. I'm very interested in seeing what else I can learn Smile

So basically, Jund should just become a worse version of another graveyard-based deck?

One top 8 doesn't make me feel warm or fuzzy. It makes me think that guy had to get lucky and grind like a champ just to get there. I don't know what deck I can say right now that I want to sit across. Tron maybe? Storm? I seem to be alright against the UR Thing/Phoenix decks. I honestly couldn't tell you right now.

I'm glad you're being logical. Some people definitely say, "but it was in the top 8, it's fine, you're overreacting". The real question is---what deck are we happy to play? Humans---no, not really. Spirits--nope. Tron? Nah. Dredge---definitely not.

Like, I get a fair deck has a grind to it, but there's no longer matchups where I'm like, "sweet, I feel good about my hand and this matchup".

Jund doesn't know what it wants to do. Blue can also rip it's deck with cantrips (Visions, Thought Scour, Azcanta, etc). These other new waves of combo aggro and midrange plays faithless looting, getting rid of dead cards and reloading. That saying of Jund having the best topdeck is definitely dead. That stopped sometime around fatal push's printing, right?

Jund no longer has the right in saying, "Our topdeck is better than yours".

Tribal decks are crazy resilient now, and going either taller and wider or being evasive. Combo decks are becoming more resilient.

I actually think Grixis Shadow/4C Shadow is now the deck we should be playing if you're trying to get that midrange itch. Unfortunately the conversation is nearly non-existitent here for some reason. Grixis is actually seeing quite a bit of results in top 8s. That may be due to Humans being just another good deck instead of THE deck.

I wonder as time goes by if modern could be a format where not playing blue as a fair deck could be very difficult.

Either way, I've been jamming Shadow decks but it sucks to have no one to discuss it with.

I do like that more Jund decks have come to a consensus though, it was looking rough for a while. When a fair deck looks drastically different from one another that is usually a very bad sign to me. It's one of the reasons why I don't think I'll ever be a true UW Control/Jeskai player.

Lets even look at the new Phoenix decks. If anyone watched SCG this weekend, the way both versions ripped through it's deck with Manamorphose, Bedlam Revlar, tormenting Voices and Loot was amazing. When you get to see that many cards in a deck you see a lot of consistency. It doesn't hurt that you get to even use some of those cards after they're discarded.

Jund will remain popular because it's a style people like...but if you guys pay attention to modern, you can clearly see this deck is being left behind as obsolete. I REALLY, REALLY want to be wrong. I'm waiting for Jund to receive just a few cards to push it over the edge, as that can easily happen. What we need now is not better removal, we need either some kind of broken creature or spell that helps rip through our deck.

My only problem with Death's Shadow decks is that tribal decks give them fits. While Humans may just be a really good deck now instead of THE deck, Spirits is quite capable of smashing hard and being disruptive as well. Not to mention, Stubborn Denial (the real power of Grixis DS imo) is terrible against both of those decks. I really don't think Shadow decks are situated that much better to be honest. Maybe 4C Shadow would have a better time, but from what I recall, I'm not super high on it either.

As for the need for strong card selection, I can't imagine any card WotC would make that could help midrange strategies specifically. If a card were made in the Jund wheel that provides decent-to-great card selection, how would they make it specific enough that mono-G Tron can't make use of it? Now what about Grixis control or even Ad Nauseam? The point is that I'm not sure that they would want to release that rabbit into the current wilds. I think it would prop up the wrong decks and knock the legs out from the ones that need such, which basically would make life more miserable for us middle-of-the-road fair decks. A good comparison would be Fatal Push. It definitely helped us, but it also hurt us greatly.

If you happen to have delirium on turn 5, maybe. I think it's cute but not good enough. Maybe even bad. The bottom line is we need to kill everything they play while being aggressive enough to keep them on defensive. I'm not sure how we do that since almost everything they play is evasive. I'm actually beginning to think all the tribal decks are bad matches for Jund straight up.

    1. I don't think we need Maelstrom Pulse and if I'm very honest I don't like it very much. I played it quite a bit and it feels clunky and slow, something you don't want now. We have Trophy to deal with whatever we need and the rest should be cheaper removal since format is faster and Trophy isn't early game removal. I'm not against Pulse but I think we're better without it. If control becomes more popular against then it might be worth to play it since it's always good to have additional removal for their planeswalkers but for now we can survive without it.

    2. I'm on 3 Fulminator Mage. Tron is still an uphill battle and Fulminator Mage is good against other big mana and some other decks too. I think that 3 is the right number.

    3. Playing less than 4 LoTV seemed like a mistake in the past but she isn't very good in the current metagame so playing less than 4 isn't mistake anymore but it's actually correct most of the time unless you expect lots of big mana and combo decks. 3/1 split with LtLH seems to be the best configuration.

    4. I was thinking about cutting Ancient Grudge not long time ago (as weird as it sounds to play zero copies of it in the Jund's sb) but considering Hardened Scales and KCI perforamce I think we need it. I'm fine with playing one copy but wouldn't cut it entirely.

    5. Ipersonally like Surgical because it's quite versatile. It can act as a gy hate (although it isn't otherwise) against Dredge, is good against combo and can be useful against big mana decks along with Trophy.

What does your current list look like?
