Jul 31, 2019I probably should have posted this before now, but real life and all. Just so everyone knows, I am posting the DCC this month on Nexus instead of here. Hopefully that isn't leaving anybody here high and dry. If you want to participate in the DCC, just go over there.Posted in: Custom Card Contests and Games

I don't know if this will be the/my final DCC, but regardless, I just want to say that I've really enjoyed my time spent posting in the DCC. That's probably because the people that post here regularly are the greatest. If I don't see you again here, I hope to see you on Nexus. Either way, I'll be around.

This has nothing to do with the DCC but...I finally got my puppy yesterday (he's a golden retriever)! Look how cute he is (he's my avatar).

Good that I do not play Legacy or Vintage and that I actually prefer non-foil cards then! (And I'm actually not joking about either of those.) Expecting it to arrive exactly on August 32nd!Quote from Eventide Sojourner »Your foil Alpha Volcanic Island is in the mail, and you should receive it no later than August 32nd.
On a serious note, thanks for the congratulations, and thanks to you as host and all the other judges and players. I almost wonder if hosting the last MCC here and winning the penultimate one makes me enter in the history of this site... No, no need to answer, I'm just dreaming. Thanks anyway to everybody. Updating my resume now.
Jun 29, 2019Nothing to report today either about the scores. All correct.Posted in: Custom Card Contests and Games
Votes: Flatline, Indighost (I have two degrees in chemistry and passed multiple biochemistry and microbiology exams. The flavor of that card is highly attractive to me, and I also like it enough mechanically to vote for it.)
I want to go out with a bang. Today is the...
End of the War 3WUB
When End of the War enters the battlefield, destroy all other nonland permanents and up to one target land, then target player puts the top four cards of their library into their graveyard.
At the beginning of each end step, if there are an artifact card, a creature card, an enchantment card, an instant card, a land card, a planeswalker card, and a sorcery card in your graveyard, you win the game.
“The war is over. Now let’s salt the land.”
If it isn't clear, the intent is that you need to have seven different cards in your graveyard. For example, an artifact creature only counts as one of the seven cards, and you choose whether it counts as the artifact one or the creature one. Either way, you need to have another card of the other type. Based on the Herald cycle from Alara, the wording I used should do that.
Name changed (it was End of Hostilities) because I had forgotten that a card named End Hostilities already exists, remembering only because I rediscovered it on Gatherer while looking for cards with "end" in the name to make July MCC banners.Anyway it goes, it has been a pleasure to be back in the DCC. Thanks to Flatline, if it weren't for him I wouldn't have come back at all very probably. It's also been a pleasure to "fight against" all of you this month, in quotation marks as it's not really a fight, but more like a friendly competition, despite the apparent oxymoron. Who knows what will happen tomorrow? (Nexus isn't up yet, will July be still hosted here? Will there be contests in July at all?)
Jun 30, 2019This probably should go in the discussion thread, but: the DCC, CCL, and MCC on Nexus will almost definitely begin 7/1/19.Posted in: Custom Card Contests and Games
I know I'm excited.
UPDATE: July will continue here as usual due to me mixing up dates. August will begin DCC, CCL, and MCC on Nexus.
Jun 25, 2019Belatedly declaring the winner:Posted in: Custom Card Contests and Games
mirrodin71 19 + 20 + 22.5 + 19 = 80.5
Freyleyes 20.5 + 21.5 + 19.5 + 22.5 = 82
Flatline 19.5 + 21.5 + 19.75 + 23.5 = 83.25
bravelion83 19.25 + 23 + 19 + 19 = 80.25
Congratulations to Flatline!
Jun 17, 2019I have recalculated the scores looking at each day's thread and putting them together in an Excel table. These are the correct result:Posted in: Custom Card Contests and Games
Phyrexian Editor 4
Here's the screenshot (T stands for "total"):
Votes up to June 16th included have been counted. Votes in netn10's second post on the 15th have NOT been counted (light red cells in the screenshot). Yellow cells are the winner of the day, who got the 2 bonus points (1 if tied).
I've also implemented a control system, making the sum of the votes each day. If a day thread has N posts (determined by checking the number of the last post), only N-1 give votes (one is the OP), and they give two votes each, so the total before adding the bonus points should be 2N-2. If we add the 2 bonus points (even in the event of a tie between two players they each get one point, so the total number of bonus points is still 2, and this month there has never been a day with three or more people tied yet), the expected total becomes 2N. If the day total (last row in the screenshot) was equal to 2N, I marked that cell as light green.
As further control, I have made the sum of the day totals (dark green cell) to check if it was equal to the sum of the points on the board (dark purple cell). After all, they should be equal because they are just two different methods to sum up the same votes. And in fact, the total is the same (382), so the numbers are correct.
All of this to say that I'm absolutely 100% sure of the scores I've posted here. IcariiFA's scores are close to the correct ones, but there are still a few mistakes. For example, I have one less point in IcariiFA's scores than I should, and there are more such small differences.
Jun 14, 2019void_nothing posted a message on [Monthly Card Contest] ***MCC*** Discussion ThreadYes, Magic (i.e. Chicago manual of style) ALWAYS uses the apostrophe-s - what Leo always calls the Saxon genitive - to form a possessive, even after a double s. See Enchantress's Presence. This is an objective issue.Posted in: Custom Card Contests and Games
Jun 12, 2019So MTGSalvation will not be closing in July as expected. I know the news of the closure is still fresh in everyone's minds and this development has only added to the confusion. It does not help matters that the staff had very short notice of the sale of the site as well. Still, I, as well as the entire site staff, wishes the new ownership well; MTGSalvation is as important to us as it is to the rest of the community and we hope for the forums to stay online.Posted in: Custom Card Creation
That being said: Once the new site - which I can now say is to be called MTGNexus - is up and running, I will no longer be involved in the Custom Card Creation community on MTGSalvation. MTGNexus is the project of almost all of the current MTGSalvation staff, all of whom I admire and trust, and it is my firm decision to start the custom card community that has been a key part of my life for nigh on fifteen years afresh in newer, hopefully even more fertile soil on a wholly independent site. All future custom card contests I run will take place on MTGNexus and very soon all of the custom card discussion I take part in will be there too.
Anyone who wishes to remain here and try and continue the amazing work that CCC has done on MTGS has all of my love and moral support. I want custom Magic to thrive everywhere, not just in the site that I happen to be active in. But it is my great hope that as many of you as possible will come with me to MTGNexus's Custom Card Creation subforum. It will not have the weight of 15 years of history, but I know that as long as it has you - hands-down my favorite people on the internet - it will have a very, very bright future.
Oh, and I think some of the tools that are planned for the new site are going to help, too. But that's a conversation for another time.
Jun 12, 2019Bonus card I thought of while making my card for the DCC today,Posted in: Custom Card Contests and Games
Other Howl of Rage x
Target creature gets +X/+0 and trample until end of turn if R was spent to cast this spell, that creature gets -0/-X until end of turn if B was spent to cast this spell.
This one is more interesting but it strangely is only a removal spell in a BR deck, since the more swamps you play, the more trouble you will have casting it for larger values on your own creatures with just the buff. I really liked this tension though, where having both of the hybrid actually made the card more restrictive, and what the card could be depended on your color combination. The better side is usually the removal side, so this is like a 3/5 black card and a 1.5/5 red card. In Red/X splashing Black it can do either side, if your draw cooperates.
I set out to do a Twisted Reflection type card, where it was a limited trick that turned into a removal spell if you kicked it with another color. You very rarely would play it if you cannot kick it. I thought of this card, since the rate on the other card I submitted wasn't great and could never really be. But the card I ended up submitting fit the "feel" I was going for better: it's a situational trick that you could justify playing in limited because it is also a removal spell. This one is cooler in a meta way, but in the game play it is usually only one card after you construct your mana base.
Just wanted to share this other card and my thought process cause I thought it was interesting.

...his dog, he's just beautiful... I wish you all the best with him, and I'm certain he will give you all the love that my own dog has given me for seven years, and even more! My own dog was a cross between a German Shepherd and a Pincher. He came from a dog refuge (always do that if you're looking for a dog, no need to buy it, there are so many in refuges and they're looking for you, just as you're looking for them) and he died from cancer last September (2018, on the morning of Saturday 22nd, exactly seven days before my birthday...) at 8 (still so young) after seven years in my family, but he's still alive in my heart. I still love him, and wherever he might be now, I know that he still loves me too.Honorable mention for chochky (I just love the card but it's missing rarity).
Apparently, I have a thing for modal cards this month... This is intended as a mirror to my card from yesterday (Coming to Life), in fact these two cards together as a fuse split card (originally called Coming//Going) was one of my early designs for MCC round 1 .
Going Away WBB
Choose one —
• Exile target creature.
• Exile target creature card from an opponent’s graveyard.
• Target opponent reveals their hand. You choose a creature card from it. That player exiles that card.
Death can manifest itself in multiple different ways.
Edit: I had already planned it, but it's just so fitting for me to post this particular card today given the story I tell in the spoiler above...
